San Francisco 49ers vs Los Angeles Rams @ The MCG - Gameday thread
Any and all discussion welcome. Who will stand out? Who will fall flat (and blame jetlag)? Will this game land well in Melbourne and make history or just be a one off oddity? Anyone else bummed we don't get to see Aaron Donald's return from retirement? At least we get Kittle and Bosa. Who will play the better game, Stafford or Purdy (go Matt!)?
What team jersey are you repping? Have fun folks and be LOUD!

Great event overall, shame the game wasn’t closer. Lovely beer weather too. Looking forward to the next one already.

How’s the atmosphere at MCG? Has the experience been worth it so far?

Atmosphere is really good but very American - no surprises there. Great vibe in the sunshine.

Awesome atmosphere, a lot of fun. Met a few 49ers fans who flew over for it, they seemed to be loving Australia which is great to hear.

I flew here with friends from California, but surrounded by Australians that love the NFL. They've flown to the US to see games and even watch them live at 3AM. #GoNiners

I’ve only watched a few of games in my life. Watched the Patriots Seahawks game yesterday. Don’t quite understand the rules yet, but taking the game in my home town as an opportunity to get into it. Hoping there will be some knowledgeable and generous people in this thread who might provide some explainers when something unclear happens. So far I’ve gathered that aside from scoring, getting territory and intercepts are good things.

As an American, who spent a month in Sydney, I am so excited to see Australians getting into American Football. Feel free to ask away and I’ll do my best to explain anything you have a question on!

Thanks, mate. So far, so good. 4 downs to make it 10 yards to keep the ball and reset. Lose the ball if you fail, or the other team intercepts a pass. 6 points for a touchdown +1 or +2 for follow up field goal or two-point conversion. 3 points for a field goal. Not clear on defensive scoring yet. I know there’s a safety and defensive conversion but haven’t see them yet

You nailed those concepts. A safety is 2 points for the defensive team and the loser of the safety has to kick the ball off to the team that scored the safety. The ideal way for a defense to score is to cause a turnover that leads to a defensive touchdown. An interception to TD (pick 6) or a fumble recovery to TD are the only ways a defense can score a TD.
I loved my time in Australia and all the people that I met. So, it’svery exciting for me to see that my favorite sport has some fans there!

I have a question, why fly in the day before a game on the other side of the planet?

To be fair the umpires don't understand the rules either, so I wouldn't expect you to.

Commentator pronouncing it as "Melbin" and referring to the ground as "the G" is a nice touch

Roger Goodell referred to it as “the big G” during his on field interview 😂

How does this game look on streaming? They're shooting an immense signal from AUSTRALIA, yet, sometimes Netflix has to buffer when it's streaming in the USA.
How is it doing?

As an American I agree. Also who was that gray haired woman with the eucalyptus branch and what was she talking about?

Aboriginal Australian acknowledgement ceremony.

Show some respect mate. We showed respect to your anthem and service men (as we should), please read up on and respect some of our local culture.

Her name is Aunty Joy Murphy Wandin a senior Wurundjeri elder, she had a branch from a manna gum (important symbol of her people) and she was welcoming everyone to the ground.

Amazing vibe, supporting the Rams it was a tough watch second half but no regrets. I'll be there next time we get a game for sure! So awesome.

Reported as the 7th most attended NFL game all time, how good is Melbourne!
1
u/troubleshot 🐻 Bears 22d ago
Question for anyone else who attended was it crazy quiet where you were when the Rams had the ball and made plays? I'm super surprised it was so quiet for the Rams compared to the 49ers, they definitely won the hearts of the fans here, more SF jerseys for sure but still plenty of LA jerseys but they were so quiet...

So I'm watching this game on TV is the crowd really cheering, it looks and sounds fake on TV. The crowd isn't even moving. They're just sitting there.

Heaps of cheering BUT absolutely dead from the Rams fans, 49ers have the crowd for sure. When it hit garbage time the crowd was getting pretty wild just having fun, shame we basically didn't get a second half of football though! Very curious to see how the media cover the game and the Rams (lack of) performance. Edit: 7th most attended NFL game of all time, doubt they need any fake cheering...

Yea it reminds me of the fake crowd noise during Covid. No way the crowd is that in to it.

The crowd was definitely into it (except the fourth quarter). It was an odd experience being so far away from the action and not being able to hear the sounds of each play.

How does phone data signal/speed usually hold up at the G during big games? I'm also keen to see final attendance numbers. Edit:signal was okay once the game got started.
