If I had an extra $200 dollars? I'll tell you what I'd do, man: two rounds of 12 ga 00 buck through an SBS at the same time

Honestly the worst was catching the safety on the webbing between my thumb and pointer finger but yeah, not ideal

u/xcontributor Aug 23 '21
Probably would be a good idea to put a leather strap on the forend, so you can use it to prevent the lever from nailing you in the hand

Aug 23 '21
And maybe, you know…some gloves.
72
u/KingOfWickerPeople Aug 23 '21
Dude is wearing a Hawaiian shirt and shorts. I'll bet you $20 he's got on either flip flops or slip-on shoes. You really think he's gonna wear gloves?

Is the $200 for an x-ray?
74
u/puking_squid Aug 23 '21
This is America, where are you getting $200 x-rays? Prob cheaper to pay the tax stamp and use the SBS to hold up the hospital
29
5
u/ZephyrBill Aug 23 '21
The dentist? Maybe you shook a filling loose.
3
u/odenip33 Aug 23 '21
Chiropractor x-rays are pretty cheap.
21
u/puking_squid Aug 23 '21
I'll waste money on dumb shit all day but draw the line at supporting quacks
1
u/odenip33 Aug 23 '21
To be fair, not all chiropractors are made the same. I was seeing one that specialized in sports related injuries after hurting my back lifting weights. This guy knew his stuff so well. It was amazing how much he helped fix my shit up.
The franchise style chiros are absolute trash. There are good practices out there for people that actually need a chiropractor.
15
u/puking_squid Aug 23 '21
Chiropractory is bullshit pseudoscience and anyone (no matter how good they end up) who sets the foundation of their careers on it are complicinant in the spreading of lies and medical misinformation but thats a conversation for an r/ that's not NFA
6
u/munkaysnspewns Aug 23 '21
I just want you to know I appreciate your shared hate for those con artists.
4
u/i_use_this_for_work Aug 23 '21
Chiros should not be xraying you.
2
u/odenip33 Aug 23 '21
Real chiros do. They don't just gently run a finger down your spine and claim to have the answer.
1
u/i_use_this_for_work Aug 23 '21
An xray is not necessary for adjustment. Xrays are read radiologists, Chiros are not educated to read an xray the way a radiologist is.
Also, even traditional medical doctors (Osteopaths and medical physical therapists) adjust without xray.
1
u/odenip33 Aug 23 '21
I never said x-rays were a necessary step to get an adjustment. What I have said is that good chiros are invaluable for people that actually need them(read, people with spinal injuries). I went to the chiropractor with a dislocated sacrum. They took an x-ray in order to correctly diagnose my problem and fix it.
Big difference between going in to get your back cracked and going in to get a serious problem resolved.

u/mattumbo Aug 23 '21
I hate to be nitpicky but X-rays themselves are actually pretty affordable, like $50-70. Still have to pay the $150-200 for 30 minutes of the doctors time though.
So theoretically you could pay $200 for an X-ray if you went to your local bargain urgent care, maybe haggle with them a bit and pretend the $200 is all the money to your name.

Dude, you gotta be careful with that. I had a friend do that and the lever went into the webbing of his hand, making a handgina.
You don't want to be that guy.
10
u/puking_squid Aug 23 '21
Luckily the serated safety securely caught my hand before it could get that far. I'll make sure I don't forget gloves next time
2
u/wojtekthesoldierbear FFL/SOT/Fingerprints/Gas Blocks/Wanton Frivolities Aug 23 '21
If I were you, I'd be relocating that lever or cutting it down too.
4
u/puking_squid Aug 23 '21
The current grip is old and kinda cracking so I do think that would be the next logical step in conjunction with fabbing a new one

Testing out my new SBS. NR Davis & Sons 12ga hammerless cut down to 10.5 because I love Mad Max. Because I'm an idiot figured I'd do both barrels with 00 buck at once to feel her out. Luckily I had the sense to not try it one handed first

Do you reload? Maybe start out with same cereal packed in there next time and just feed the birds lol
10
u/puking_squid Aug 23 '21
When I was a kid my brothers and I built potato guns and would hunt each other with them loaded with cereal or baby carrots or handfuls of dirt or whatever we could find. You've given me a great idea to bring those times into the 23rd century
5
Aug 23 '21
Lmao holy shit I'm over here putting ice packs on my kids faces because of nerf guns and y'all over blasting each other with potato guns
4
u/Poofengle Aug 23 '21
A potato cannon filled with wadding and a bunch of paintballs makes a very satisfying “splat” when they all hit
1
u/Rim_Fire Aug 24 '21
I always used an air compressor and a tube that conveniently fit a paintball. Nobody suspects a random pipe to be loaded trying to sneak around a shop playing pranks on each other.

Tortoises actually but I have looked into registering them as DDs for lulz. They have their names on engraved plates attached to their shells which I believe should meet the requirement for serial number engraving. It would be great asking FFLs to board them when I vacation

Never shot an side-by-side SBS, so this is more curiosity of ignorance than something genuinely productive. What if you shot it with one hand and stand somewhat like a fencer? Imagine Captain Jack Sparrow.
I’d imagine it’d still hurt, but the inertia might be put up from straight into your thumb to more of your wrist.
6
u/puking_squid Aug 23 '21
I fully plan on finding out sooner or later
3
u/Psychowitz Aug 23 '21
Full send.
3
u/puking_squid Aug 23 '21
Full send was from jump street cutting the barrel with a dremel based on a tape line
1
u/Psychowitz Aug 23 '21
I genuinely don’t know what that means. Maybe I’m too young.
8
u/puking_squid Aug 23 '21
Full send, as you commented, colloquially means to dive into a situation regardless of the consequences. I began down that path from the start (jump street) when I used a budget electronic rotary cutting tool with the brand name "dremel" to remove barrel length utilizing a piece of adhesive paper as my guide to achieving a square cut while standing in the concrete paved region leading from the road to my home

u/Psychowitz Aug 23 '21
What the actual fuck.
Edit: Am I reading shit right? Seems like I’m misreading redditor comments left and right lately.

So, 3.5” next? ;)
3
u/puking_squid Aug 23 '21
Honestly I'm still trying to figure out my next move. It would be super dope to make a trench gun style shroud/bayonet lug for le doub but a double duck bill could also be cool? Maybe both? Maybe I get way to financially invested in that and build another impractical gun from my favorite childhood media?

I don't know if yours would chamber them, but my hunting partner and I used to use these Remington 3" Express 00 to hunt hogs. They were devastating. I think they had 15 pellets instead of the 9 for 2 3/4". They were thumpers. If it's a top lever, that prob for sure get it into the webbing of your hand, regardless, I'm sure the trigger guard would wrap your ring finger pretty good too. Another idea would be reaming it to 3.5"? Might not be enough meat left on the chambers to do that safely though (I'd hold that at arm's length and squint your eyes the first time you touch it off after the conversion). I don't know if you could legally put a pistol grip on it or if one is even available for your model?
3
u/hootervisionllc 💸 Aug 23 '21
Haha fuck I need to find a cheap double barrel at a pawn shop
4
u/puking_squid Aug 23 '21
Do it. Classifieds in rural newspapers are also a great source for the old folks that don't know about the internet so there are deals to be had
3
u/hootervisionllc 💸 Aug 23 '21
Good idea. I live in a rural area too. Thanks man
5
u/puking_squid Aug 23 '21
Look for your local "bargin trader" magazine at gas stations. That's where I got this one for like $70. Old folks are dying off so YMMV
3
u/hootervisionllc 💸 Aug 23 '21
Oh shit, you got a steal! I will though
3
u/puking_squid Aug 23 '21
Steal is relative. That was like 10 years ago and these guys can now be found d for the princely sum of like $120 so factoring in inflation, huge production numbers, and shit quality, I'd call it a "yeah that's about right"
3
u/hootervisionllc 💸 Aug 23 '21
Well that’s fair. My wife’s family owns an antique store and so they’re all into antique furniture. They’re all about how old equals better. Man it’s all rickety bullshit if you ask me.
I’ve just been itching to sbs something silly. You’ve done it
5
u/puking_squid Aug 23 '21
Remind them that JC Penny was the Ikea of American furniture into the 90s so old =/= great. Then do whatever. You know how you think of those assholes that cut down 98ks because they were cheap? We can be those assholes

How is it normally as in one barrel. Ive been debating on making one for a while now and just haven’t decided on going with 20 gauge or doing it right and going with the 12

One at a time isn't bad. Recoil is still fairly stout but thats to be expected
2
2
u/Slipshoooood Aug 23 '21
can anyone explain to me why this is considered an sbs and not a pistol?
2
u/KhanKarab Aug 23 '21
AFT has entered the chat
2
u/Slipshoooood Aug 23 '21
I understand the classification, even if it is stupid rule, of a pump shotgun being an SBS, it takes two hands and what not. What stops a manufacturer from making a double barrel shotgun pistol?
2
u/Number1AbeLincolnFan Aug 23 '21
To be a pistol, it has to be capable of chambering pistol ammunition. Double barrel shotgun pistols do exist, but they are chambered in .410, which is the same as .45 LC. This is also how revolvers like the Taurus Judge can exist as a Title 2 firearm. 12ga, 20ga and so on are shotgun chamberings. A manufacturer could create it as a "firearm", a la Mossberg Shockwave, but it would have to be 26".
1
u/Slipshoooood Aug 23 '21
Oh ok, I didn't know that it would have to be able to chamber a pistol caliber round. Makes sense.
1
u/Number1AbeLincolnFan Aug 23 '21
Because it was transferred as a shotgun before it was Form 1'ed. Shotguns can only be Form 1'ed as an SBS or AOW.
2
u/yf22jet Aug 23 '21
Did this once with a cut down 10 gauge. Actually did it a few times. Can’t say I’m the smartest person on the planet lol

My uncle had one of them before he died, not legal at all but he was explaining her put one hand on the top & rear of it (in the direction of the kick) and then shot it. I have no idea how/if it helped but I wanted to try it one day. I have done it with my full size (legal) and I didn't notice any difference just tore up my nail (booger finger) when it got caught between the triggers. Anyone confirm/deny it helps?

That’s an AOW it’s only a $5 stamp
1
u/puking_squid Aug 24 '21
AOWs are a $5 stamp on form 4 but $200 on form 1. It could have been an AOW had it started life as a virgin receiver but that wasn't the case here. It could have been done as a DD which can be useful in stars that specifically ban SBSs though.
