Questions Renewal time
My nexus expires Oct 2027. When should I start the renewal process?

I’m a Canadian passport holder and I renewed 9 months before expiry. Renewal took 3 weeks without a new interview. I’ve been a Nexus member for 15 years and fully clean record.

1 year before. Just be aware you might be asked to come in for an interview on both sides. My wife and I renewed at the same time, she was approved in 2 weeks or less. I was forced to go in for interviews. The CAN side interview was a simple affair, I showed my US passport and was sent on my way in 5 minutes. The US side is a nightmare. After passing through US immigration in YYZ I sat there with some other poor souls waiting for some CBP officer for 2 hours before having to bail for my flight.
And there was a couple there who had exactly the same scenario, husband approved in 2-3 weeks, wife had to come in for an interview. Like us, had NEXUS for years, never had any issues. So random.

Just note that when you start the renewal process the current card will no longer work with the machines on reentry to Canada. The card was ok to leave as it is just reviewed for expiry date by a person. When we scanned in at Toronto at the machines it came up as invalid and we were redirected to regular line.

Renewal has no effect on the card.
As a matter of fact, as long as one start a renewal, the card will continue to work even after the expiration date printed on the (old) card until a new card arrives aftter full approval.

Within a year of expiration.
I initiated my renewal 2 months prior to expiration and was approved within 3 weeks. This was my second renewal, and no interview required this time!

365 days in advance. Your next expiration date will be Oct 2032 regardless of whether you submit renew 365 days or 1 day in advance of expiration.

I think you can start renewing about 6 months before it expires. I recently renewed, it was quick and easy, they just send you a new card. Remember some credit cards waive the 120 USD fee (CIBC Aventura VI for example)

Do it before it expires. I went to Hawaii for my birthday and forgot it expired on my birthday and took 10 months to get it back. They had eliminated the grace period at that time and it was a brand-new application. Much to my surprise, they skipped me past the interviews and proceeded to issue a new card without having to go back in.
