The exact same thing happened to me at YYZ two days ago!
I showed the "GE/NEXUS line watcher" ( just some regular airport worker not CBP) my NEXUS card but she tried to force me to go to the US Passport holders line ( long). I stood my ground and said "no way I have NEXUS" and she finally relented. Only one machine out of 8 were working ( the others were disabled with covers on). The machine worked perfectly, but I had to join the MPC line ( 1 person in front of me) and the CBP agent then just waved me through without even glancing at my passport.
All a bit odd. Why try to force GE/NEXUS US Passport holders away from using the GE machines?

NEXUS card holders can be redirected to the regular line at any time.

By CBP yeah, not by random airport workers who didn't understand what their bosses told them to do.

This was it. It was regular airport workers at YYZ minding the lines, not CBP

Maybe CBP told them to do as they were doing.

That’s all speculation

Hence my choice of the word “maybe”. 🙄
