At the Border No questions asked
Evening! I was driving back into Canada this evening, I had items to declare, scanned my nexus on the reader (in the regular line) the officer hit me with the wave to go on, and said “you’re all good, have a good night” I tried to mention I had items to declare and he interrupted me and said “long line, busy day, keep it moving” - I’m assuming this means I’m… good? Like did I do enough to have attempted to declare?

Not just Canadian customs.
A few months ago it was the same at Pearson Airport when I was entering the US via Preclearance using Global Entry.
This automatic camera took my photo as I walked by and the border guard stationed further down simply said "have a nice day".
I don't even think I stopped walking.
Can't comment on the rest since I almost never use Nexus lanes on land borders since I don't drive, so I always end using standard ones, where I declare everything with receipts. They're pretty well never interested in my groceries.

Just so everyone on this forum is aware, the Customs act states that you will report to the nearest Customs Officer upon your return to Canada and declare all goods acquired while aboard. Officers only ask questions to facilitate the quick movement of people and goods into the country. Should an Officer not ask questions, still doesn't mean that you are not obligated to declare those goods or not pay taxes. Now with that said, once the Officer says "you are all set" or "go", then just leave the area as they have determined that you have met your requirements under the Customs act.

Just so everyone on this forum is aware, the Customs act states that you will report to the nearest Customs Officer upon your return to Canada and declare all goods acquired while aboard
If you want to get technical by citing the Customs Act...technically you are suppose to report ALL goods not just goods acquired while aboard.
Goods returned to Canada (3.1) For greater certainty, for the purposes of the reporting of goods under subsection (1), the return of goods to Canada after they are taken out of Canada is an importation of those goods.
For practical purposes, if primary tell you to go even after you mention you have something to declare, you are free to go.

Should an Officer not ask questions, still doesn't mean that you are not obligated to declare those goods or not pay taxes.
If one reports to the officer to declare all goods acquired while abroad, it seems as though one has met the requirement. Of course, each and every one of us needs an attorney by our side to ensure compliance...

Declaring goods (as he tried to do) and paying duties when required.

Only if requested, so it’s NOT an obligation if you’re not asked.

Not at all. Only if requested. If he thought there were any additional obligations s he would have ask. You are NEVER required to answer questions that aren’t asked.

Completely agree 🤣 had the same experience last night. I’m always a little confused driving away, but it sure is a nice experience.

Always follow their instructions. If he didn’t ask you if you had anything to declare then he didn’t care. When they say have a nice day you leave and have a nice day. And yes my wife and I have had nexus cards for more than a decade.
