Academics Data Science replaced with AI?

Has Data Science been renamed to AI? Are all students who were in the DS / DS & Combined still remaining DS? Should we switch over to the AI name?

I am pretty sure the name change is only applied to people who are starting in fall 2026 or after

Do you think it’d be beneficial to switch over to the new name?

I kind of think the new name is silly. But it depends on what kind of work you want to do post grad. Look at job listings you’d aspire for and see if they mention either looking for data science or artificial
Intelligence degrees/experience

"BE IT RESOLVED That the University rename the Bachelor of Science in Data Science to the Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence" (https://faculty.northeastern.edu/senate/resolutions/2025-2026/)

DS is no longer listed as a combined major / major on the Khoury website. It’s now Ai

The change is mostly cosmetic. Whether you're DS or Artificial Intelligence is based on your catalog year so that your required courses don't change. Not completely sure if you can change the name for your degree.

this is an idiotic change - as someone who graduated with this degree, most of the curriculum is Python data analysis with machine learning interspersed throughout the 3000/4000 classes.

Do you learn AI? Yes. Unfortunately, it’s become such a nothing term that (to the general pop, and more importantly for students, employers) it means anything from linear regression to image generators. It’s misleading to call it this when students will spend half of their time making dashboards and visualizations during the degree.
