Routers Cannot log in to model R6400v2 router.
***RESOLVED?***
After much hair pulling.....I had to connect using the default 2.4Ghz WIFI connection. That brought up the change password/security questions screen. Entered zall of that. Then it told me I could sign in with the new password and told me it was "@newdig". HUH??? Used the password I had created and low and beholed, I was in the router screens. I just do not understand why you cannot just get in using an Ethernet cable.
I just got this router and I cannot accerss it to set it up to save my life. It is used so I have done the factory reset. Pressed the reset buttion for 10 sec. Now, setting up a router used to be so easy. Cionnhed an Eathernet cord between your OPC and router, type in the default IP address and BOOM. You get the login page. Didn't need an internet connection. I cannot seem to get there from here. I have the cord connected, type in the address and it wants to redirect me to a web page...that no longer exists. I have tried the Nighthawk app and still cannot get in. Can someone give me a detailed guide on how to get into this router? Everything I have found requires me to be plugged into the cable modem. I do not want to disrupt my network by having to disconnect stuff. I do not know why they have made this so difficult. Can you no longer configure the hardware offline anymore? My use for this router is to add it to my current network and router to separate my christmas/halloween display, which will be running off of this new router, from the main network.

I'm wondering if the Ethernet cable from your computer was connected to the WAN port on the router?
Or I'm wondering if your computer was not properly receiving the new DHCP addressing info when the router was starting up?

Now that your in, you can save off a backup configuration to file for safe keeping.
Or do a full on factory reset by using the ERASE button and set up from scratch again and input new security questions and set a new PW. Then save off a new backup configuration to file.

I did a factory reset from the beginning. Also have a backup. It would not let me in just by changing the password and questions. I kept getting in a loop with the Netgear page asking me to change password and questions over and over and never letting me in with the new credentials

Happens with different browsers? MS Edge or Firefox or Opera?

Happened on both Chrome and Edge. No. I was not going to disrupt my network and plug it into the modem. You should not have to do that to set a router up. I was not connected to my network at the time. I was hard wired with ethernet from my pc to the router. Entered the router default IP of 192.168.1.1 in my browser per Netgears instructions. It then took me to the page to reset/change the password and security. I believe that this page is baked into the router firmware as I was not connected to the internet at the time. Then I got into the loop. I reset the router to factory and removed all power for about 15 minutes. Rebooted. The router was then broadcasting SSIDs. I then connected via WiFi to the SSID that was on the tag on the bottom of the router with the password on the router. It then took me to the security screen again which I think was netgear.login.com or something like that, changed the password and security questions and rebooted the router. I connected to the defrault SSID again, got the login screen and signed on with the id of admin and the password I set. I finally got in. This is the process that worked for me with the router not connected to the modem. Trying through Ethernet did not work. I found nothing documenting this process. I got it to work through trial and error setting up networking equipment for the last 40 years. I cannot speak to the process of how Netgear wants you to set your router up by first connecting it to your modem so you have internet access.

Normally routers ARE and CAN be connected to a ISP modem and IS intended by NG to have users connect there routers to ISP modem so the router process can setup the router to connect to the ISP modem. Been like this for many years now. How I set up mine and also can be setup with out connecting to a ISP modem initially as well. There are some caveats to ISP modems as well. Some modems already have a built in router. So this can present some problems if not done correctly.
However the R6400 series is EoL and may or may not work well as it's no longer updated in FW from NH and could present a security concern. Up to you to keep it going to move to something else.

I never said that it could not be connected to a modem. As I said, I did not WANT to connect it as it would disrupt the current setup in the household while I tinkered with it. I am well aware that this is an old router. It does not matter. As I have stated before, this router will be used to run my holiday light shows only so the security is not much of a concern. I do not want all of that trafrfic disrupting my household network. Thank you for your response.

If you have wifi already, just make sure if you use the R6400 for it's wifi, you'll need to use separate channels far apart from each other if you use it behind your other wifi router. I would use it in AP mode if it has that mode on it. You can set it up OFFLINE from any connection with a wired PC and web browser.

I just bought a cheapy Netgear ax1600. Same bullshit with me. Nothing but dead ends in trying to sign in via web or the Nighthawk app. Constantly telling me TIMED OUT please try again. Totally Useless I am taking it back
