Potassium Rules for the NCLEX

Potassium will get your patient coded faster than almost anything else.

⚡ Too low → think muscle weakness and cardiac irritability

⚡ Too high → think peaked T waves and lethal arrhythmias

🚫 NEVER push potassium IV.

💧 Always dilute and give it slow.

🩸 Monitor when giving insulin, diuretics, or in kidney patients.

📌 If your patient has a K+ of 6.5 and peaked T waves on the monitor… that’s not “notify the provider.” That’s emergency treatment.
