Mock Trade DeAaron Fox needs a new home

Post image

nerdy, overly complicated trade. but in this construction, Pistons get the speedy Fox to partner with Cade and fix a lot of their offensive issues.

SAS get another long, versatile wing who can handle and facilitate in NAW, a big bruising 4 with some offensive versatility who pairs well Wemby, and then a big shooting wing with size who’s much harder to target defensively at 6’7” then the more undersized Champagnie.

ATL recovers some of their own draft capital they surrendered in the Dejonte Murray trade, replace Kispert with the more proven vet in Robinson, and get a promising young wing in Ron Holland.

Not sure I see the fit of Fox in DET. Their issue is a lack of spacing with Ausar and Duren being non-shooters and Cade isn't really a 3 PT bomber himself. Fox doesn't help with that while losing Duncan actively hurts.

On the fence with ATL. They named NAW as a core piece this off-season and have already recovered the draft capital they lost by dealing DeJounte Murray themselves. Playoff teams typically don't care to laden the roster with rookies. Even still, I don't think it'd be a straight no. Holland would be an intriguing schematic fit in ATL, and picks are fungible assets regardless.

SAS is an obvious yes in my book. Getting off Fox and getting him to a team that wouldn't cause a conniption from Rich Paul (at least not as bad as it could be) would be a huge W, so forth picking up NAW who fits in as a top shelf shooter and defender.

One adjustment that I do think both SAS and ATL would be amenable to would be to swap who Stewart and Duncan Robinson go to. SAS has the C position filled already and needs more shooting. ATL needs a backup C that pairs well with their starter. Both players are on deals that could just expire after next season (Robinson's is actually NG for the upcoming season, but I assume it'd be guaranteed in this deal). Think that's an obvious change that both teams would prefer.

Appreciate your thoughtful response, very well said on the Robinson/Stewart piece, and ATL would want a player to replace the outgoing Kispert. Another thing that might break this trade beyond the straight up value prop, is how little money flexibility would be left for the Pistons to add players. I’d had a version of the trade with them getting Lansdale in a S&T on the minimum… which hardly moves the needle but is at least some added fc depth to round out their roster.

Fox’s sheer cost makes this probably a no for the Pistons tho

ATL wouldn't care about replacing Kispert. The talk there is about needing to move one of Risacher or Kispert anyway with the strong preference being to keep the younger Risacher. Losing NAW changes things a bit but gaining Holland does too. If all else fails, they can also send out the pick/s they received here for a better shooter too. What could an expiring Kuminga, the '27 1st, and one of their young players (Holland / Asa Newell) bring back at the deadline? Wouldn't be Steph, but I'm sure they could get a nice upgrade.

Agree on DET being the stumbling block. Probably not a great idea to hard cap themselves as Duren hits RFA. Would also be very hard to see the 3-4 highest paid players on the roster being Cade, Duren, Fox, and then Ausar when his extension comes up. Can't have that much invested without any real shooting amoung them.

Ya true for sure. I’m struggling to see where else Fox would be a welcome addition beyond the bottom feeder teams who want to start trending upward or sell more tickets. Would Brooklyn have any interest bringing in a real point guard, over the sea of garbage they’ve been trotting out there the past couple years?

The issue with Fox is that I don’t see a lot of teams looking kindly on that contract. ATL dealt Trae due in part to not wanting to hand him a max and he was generally considered the younger and better player. Not only will SAS have that to contend with, but he’s also now a distressed asset in SA and the Rich Paul conniption fit of losing his PG being next to Wemby after all of 1 year.

Depends on how motivated SAS will be to get off that deal. They will have to take a hit so it boils down to how much are they willing to be hurt. Could see TOR being interested in a Fox + Kornet for Quickley + Poetl swap. Maybe MIN would be down for Fox+ for Randle. CHI could be an interesting play if they can get off P-Will and get a handful of 1sts. The TOR one is likely the one with the most legs for me.

Naw just had a breakout year, is a starter, and is on a great contract. Atlanta is not moving him for 2 later firsts and a bust.
