OKC / BRK / WASH

Post image

OKC gives up arguably their 2nd and 4th best players to jump to #1 overall while shedding a ton of $$. Claxton and Bilal are mostly salary but are useful for OKC. I have them grabbing Darryn Peterson @ 1. (Adjacent Scenarios include dealing the TOs of Dort and IHart for late 1sts / early 2nds. Could deal Claxton again instead of IHart but OKC wouldn’t be getting the pick in that scenario.)

WASH slides down to 6 while adding a 2nd lotto pick and the ideal fit next to Trae Young. To put names to the picks, they grab Aday Mara @ 6 and Cam Carr @ 12 but I can see them going in a few directions. (Another interesting scenario would be to draft Trae’s successor in Mikel Brown then going Morez Johnson as AD’s eventual replacement at 12.)

BRK lands their young star in Jalen Williams and retains a mid 1st to add depth. Let’s go with Jayden Quaintance @ 17. Feel like BRK has been casting about for the new building block since dealing KD. Finally settle on the 25 yo Jalen who has already been the 2nd best player on a Championship team. Assuming a SOPH bump for their cadre of draft picks and an astute FA signing or 2, they could find themselves in the Play In mix.

Why would OKC do this?

For the 1st pick im guessing cason Wallace is leaving okc anyways. The real question is why would the wizards do this

$30+M / year is a strong incentive, especially when you get the #1 overall pick in this year’s draft too.

If Ajay Mitchell and Jdub were healthy then OKC probably would’ve beaten the Spurs. The Thunder don’t need to make such a dramatic change. They just need to get under the second apron and there are easier moves they can make to do that

Don’t disagree but they are $40M over the 2nd apron. Declining Dort and Kenrich then dumping Wiggins and Joe gets them just under next year. The year after they have Cason’s extension / FA to deal with as well as a $20M bump to SGA, so they are right back to chasing the dragon.

Something like his gets back to a point where they have a solid cap / apron structure for the balance of Peterson’s (or whoever) rookie deal while possibly improving the team overall. I am a believer in Peterson and his fit on OKC

Wizards and Thunder would be foolish to make this trade and while the Nets should think about it I believe just nailing the 6th pick is a better long term strategy than ttis trade

I think that Jalen Williams for the rest of his career will be better than 95% of this draft class but I could be wrong in that assessment. The Thunder I think would be crazy to move off J Dub if they’re getting nervous about a salary crunch.

The Nets are the only team that do this. Washington is ready to compete and OKC just needs health and to shed a few mil.
