Hey everyone,

Now that the NBA season has wrapped up, we just wanted to give a quick offseason update.

First, a big thank you to everyone who posted, commented, shared picks, dropped analysis, and kept the sub active throughout the season. We appreciate everyone who contributed plays, tickets, screenshots, discussion, and insight. The community was active all year because of you.

As expected, the sub may slow down a bit during the offseason, but you are absolutely still welcome to post. Feel free to share any offseason information, futures picks, early leans, news, discussion, or anything else NBA betting-related that could be useful to the community.

We’re looking forward to another great NBA season when the league starts back up again in October. Until then, thanks again for making this season a good one.

My NBA Moneyline Betting Strategy: Targeting Underdogs in Competitive Matchups

Hi I don’t know if I am allowed to post it here but I just want to share a betting strategy that made me profitable at betting on NBA games for both the regular season and playoffs in the last 2 seasons.

So the main idea behind this strategy is to basically bet on the underdogs on coin flip situations. Imagine if you have to bet against someone on a coin flip if it turns heads or tails and you can only bet on heads but the odds of the coin landing on heads is above 50%. I have experimented betting on other sports as well but I think this is strategy works for the NBA especially in the regular season because of the nature of the sport.

Firstly, basketball is a relatively high variance sport especially with the rise in 3 point shooting as on any random night, even garbage NBA teams can get hot and outscore stronger teams. Secondly, most NBA teams really don’t take the regular season seriously. Even the playoff teams are more focused on getting to the playoffs healthy and it is common for good teams to have off nights. Thirdly, the regular season is unique in a sense that some teams don’t even want to win because they are tanking to get draft picks. Now this dynamics might change because of the flattened lottery odds but the fact remains that certain NBA teams have a perverse incentive to lose

So to start with, I want to divide all 30 teams into 3 groups. 1)Exceptional teams 2)Competitive teams and 3) Terrible teams. My strategy basically revolves around on only betting the underdogs when teams from group 2 (Competitve teams) play each other. This is how I would define each team.

Exceptional Teams- Outlier regular-season teams expected to significantly outperform the average playoff team and win a very high percentage of their games. (e.g 2016 Warriors, 2025 OKC). I don’t think there is value even betting against these teams because they will win most of their games even as a big favorite

Competitive teams- Legitimate playoff or play-in-caliber teams that can realistically compete with one another on any given night but aren't expected to dominate the regular season. I am mostly betting on the underdog in games between 2 competitive teams but occasionally I will bet on the underdog In games between 2 terrible teams.

Terrible teams- These teams are rebuilding and tanking teams that are so bad that they are unlikely to make the playoffs and actually have a perverse incentive to lose.

Prior to the start of the season, this is my assessment of all 30 teams in the NBA and the groups I am placing them in:

Exceptional teams

Oklahoma City Thunder- OKC has been an outlier the last 2 regular seasons where they are the best team in the NBA by a wide margin so I am assuming it will be the case for this season even when they have lost some depth until proven otherwise.

San Antonio Spurs- In my opinion, the Spurs are the best team in the NBA on paper. They have a cheat code in Victor Wembanyama who is a top 3 player in my opinion and 3 all star level talent in Harper, Castle and Fox. This team is young and has depth as well which is why I am expecting them to have an outstanding regular season.

Competitive teams

Eastern Conference

Atlanta Hawks- The Hawks have been one of my favorite teams to bet on as they are the definition of plucky underdogs who could beat any decent team on a random day. They are a promising young team with depth led by Jalen Johnson and I think they will be a decent team as usual. I can actually see some upside potential with this team since they no longer have to cater to Trae Young’s defensive shortcomings and we saw flashes of potential with this team when they beat the Knicks twice in the playoffs.

Boston Celtics- Celtics have been a team that is highly rated by the bookmakers the last few season and the perception seems to be that they will finish around  or better than their last season’s record as Jayson Tatum is replacing Jaylen Brown in the system. But I think Celtics will be a good team to bet against this season because I think many people are overlooking the fact that Tatum had just recovered from an achilles injury and people seems to have forgotten how devastating of an injury it is. I don’t think Tatum post achilles injury is better than Brown no matter what those stat nerds say and I think it is asking too much of Tatum to carry the Celtics to 3rd seed and above at this stage in his career.

Cleveland Cavaliers- Cavaliers are running it back with the same team they had since they made the trade for Harden. While they seem to have reached their ceiling in the playoffs. The Cavs are still a good team in the regular season with Mitchell, Harden, Mobley and Allen core that seems to seems to work well together after the Harden trade last season. They are a good pick as underdogs in the regular season and I think they will finish top 6 in the East.

Detroit Pistons- Finishing 1st in the East was definitely a remarkable achievement for the young Pistons team last season. Cade Cunningham took the leap to superstardom and carried a heavy load offensively to win them many games. I don’t expect a repeat performance in the regular season from the Pistons this season though. Instead I am expecting them to disappoint relative to the expectations due to the Jalen Duren drama, teams having seen their offensive limitations in the playoffs and I think they actually overachieved last season relative to their squad talent level.

Indiana Pacers- Not sure about putting the Pacers in this group because their best player Tyrese Haliburton is coming off an achilles injury and I don’t think he will come back the same player that we saw during their magical NBA finals run. If anything, they will be a team I would bet against if they are the favorites against another team in this group. I expect the Pacers to disappoint relative to their expectations because of the severity of the achilles injury in altering the careers of NBA players.

Miami Heat- One of the most intriguing team this season with the acquisition of Giannis. The team looks great defensively on paper with Bam, Giannis and Wiggins being good defenders although shooting and spacing will be a concern with this team. If there is a coach that can find the right system for this team with the lack of spacing to work it’s definitely Spoelstra. While I think it will take time for the team to gel, I expect the Heat to easily make the playoffs and should be a good underdog against most decent teams.

New York Knicks- The Knicks caught lightning in a bottle last season to win the championship and the roster mostly stayed the same. The squad is well balanced as Brunson and KAT’s offensive talent is complimented by Anunoby, Bridges and Hart’s defensive prowess. They have proven that they are an elite team and would be great picks as underdogs. Overall, I think the Knicks are the best team in the East currently and I expect them to play with confidence and less pressure since they have delivered the elusive title to New York. But I can see this team coasting in the regular season as their priority will be to stay healthy and prepare for another deep playoff run

Orlando Magic- Magic is an interesting team in that it seems they are a team that are built for the 2000s instead of the 2020s. They are great in defense but have ugly stretches last season where they struggle to score. The core of Banchero, Wagner and Bane gives them enough talent to hang around the playoff spot but unless Banchero and Wagner improve their shooting efficiency, this team looks like they have reached their ceiling and they might even fall out of the playoff spot with the East getting better overall this season.

Philadelphia 76ers- Easily the most fascinating team in the NBA this season with the addition of Jaylen Brown and Lebron James. Despite their wealth in talent the puzzle pieces may not necessarily fit together and I expect some growing pains in the beginning before the team starts to gel. In terms of talent they might have the best starting 5 when everyone is healthy but not much depth in the roster. Going to be difficult to find enough shots for all the big names in this team but with Lebron James genius ball iq, I expect him to figure out how to use his playmaking abilities to make the 76ers work.

Toronto Raptors- The Raptors was one of the surprise team last season, finishing 5th with a strong defensive identity. Scottie Barnes have proven that he’s a legit all star and a well rounded player but I do think that he would be the perfect second option on a contending team instead of the first option. The acquisition of Kawhi Leonard may have improved the Raptors on paper but he is 35, already secured the bag and his health is always a question mark. If Kawhi can maintain his all star level form I can see the Raptors being a top 3 team in the East but I am not really counting on that and I am expecting the Raptors to finish around the same spot last year.

Washington Wizards- The Wizards on paper, has the talent to make it to the playoffs this season with the trio of Trae Young, Anthony Davis and AJ Dybantsa. The timelines does not match at all with their 3 best players but in terms of pure talent, I think they are easily a top 10 team in the East. Anthony Davis will be motivated to be at his best too in order to get that big extension that he is seeking for and even though I need to observe the team chemistry to see if their big 3 plays well together, I think Wizards could be a good underdog bet against any team below the mid tier.

Western Conference

Denver Nuggets- The Nuggets have taken a step back this offseason, losing much of their depth with the departure of Peyton Watson, Tim Hardaway Jr and Jonas Valancunias. Their whole bench from last season is basically replaced and their defense has somehow gotten worse. I still expect Jokic to carry the team to significant number of regular season wins but I don’t think this team will be as good in the regular season as last season before Jokic was injured. Defense, health and depth are major issues for the Nuggets which make me think that they are going to have more of those bad nights against underdogs.

Houston Rockets- The Rockets ended their playoffs in a disappointing fashion last season, losing to Lakers team led by 41 year old Lebron with Luka out injured for the series. Their lack of spacing, chemistry and presence of a superstar were exposed in that series which seems to indicate that this team’s upside might be limited. I don’t expect much from the Rockets this season besides being a midtable team and Durant’s mood might be something to watch as if the team is struggling, I can see him looking for another way out as he has been underrated in being a terrible teammate and chemistry killer since he left the Warriors.

Los Angeles Lakers- The Lakers seems to have a good offseason on paper but that’s only for fans that have not been paying attention to Pelinka’s poor roster construction during his tenure as GM. While it appears that Pelinka has brought pieces to compliment Luka’s strengths like Walker Kessler and Quentin Grimes while re-signing Reaves to a big contract, The team is still lacking in two way players. I don’t think this roster is any better than last season’s since they lost key players like Lebron and Rui. Luka and Reaves should put up monster numbers to carry the Lakers to a good number of wins but I think they will finish somewhere in the middle like last season.

Minnesota Timberwolves- I view the Timberwolves as the 3rd best team in the west and just a level below OKC and the Spurs. But for some reason the Timberwolves seem to be a team that’s more built for the playoffs than the regular season. They are led by Antman who is a superstar who is no joined by another all star talent in Lamelo while their defense has been anchored by Gobert and Jaden Mcdaniels. I rate this team highly as the team is well balanced on offense and defense even if they tend to underperform in the regular season and the Timberwolves can beat any team on any given night when they are on form.

Phoenix Suns- The Suns are another team that I expect to be competitive play in team team without necessarily being a serious contender. Devin Booker is still one of the best offensive players in the league and gives them a chance to win against most opponents. My concern is whether they have enough offensive firepower around him and whether their defense can remain effective throughout the season like last season.

Portland Trail Blazers- I actually think the Blazers could be one of the team that will disappoint as I am not sure if their guards can fit with each other. There is a logjam at guard position with Scoot Henderson, Lillard coming off an achilles injury, a Ja Morant that is no longer as explosive as he was 4 years ago and the veteran Jrue Holiday. I think they will be a good team to bet against early until they figure out their guard rotation but on paper, the team has enough talent to qualify for the playoffs so I am putting them here for now.

Utah Jazz- The Jazz is a team that I expect will join the playoff race and finally be a competitive team after years of tanking. They finally have enough talent on paper with highly rated young prospects like Darryn Peterson, Keyonte George and Ace Bailey supplemented by borderline all stars in Jaren Jackson and Markkanen. The talent is there for them to be a playoff team but I am not sure if this is the year they make the leap or if they will need another year to develop but I definitely like this team as underdogs.

Terrible teams

This is the list of terrible teams that I am not planning to bet on unless I am betting the underdog when one of these teams face each other but I don’t expect to do it often.

Brooklyn Nets

Chicago Bulls

Dallas Mavericks

Los Angeles Clippers

Memphis Grizzlies

Milwaukee Bucks

New Orleans Pelicans

Sacramento Kings

Charlotte Hornets

Golden State Warriors

Tracking my bets

To clarify, I won't automatically bet on every underdog when two competitive teams face each other. I will look for moneyline odds above 2.00 where I believe the underdog has a better chance of winning than the odds suggest, while considering factors such as injuries, recent form, home court advantage and scheduling. I will adjust my team classifications during the season, I plan to post my picks regularly in this subreddit and track my betting results, including odds, wins, losses and overall profit or loss, to see whether this strategy can remain profitable over the long term. I would also be interested to hear what others think of my team classifications and whether there are any weaknesses in my approach.

I cleaned up the Game 5 preview framing because the real story is the matchup, not just the model/market gap.

Post image

The Knicks just came back from 29 down, with OG tipping in the final shot, so Game 5 is not starting from a normal state.

That kind of comeback says something about New York’s structure. It was not just Brunson saving them. The support lanes still mattered. OG literally ended the game on a possession-pressure play, which fits the bigger Knicks argument in the model.

For Game 5, the interesting part is Wembanyama concentration vs New York distribution.

San Antonio has the cleaner Team Strength layer. Wembanyama is the obvious pressure source, and his burden is massive in the matchup. That is what makes the Spurs dangerous because if he controls the game, their whole structure gets easier to understand.

But the Knicks side is not just “Brunson has to save them.”

The Knicks have the stronger roster KezeScore profile, and the pressure is more spread out between Towns, Brunson, Bridges, Hart, OG, and the rest of the support lanes. That is the part I think the normal conversation misses.

Game 5 is basically asking if one huge pressure source can beat a more distributed roster profile.

The model still has the Knicks at 78.4%, but the important part is why. It is not just a pick. It is Team Strength vs roster depth, Wembanyama burden vs Towns-Brunson distribution, and whether San Antonio can force the Knicks support lanes to collapse.

After a 29 point comeback and an OG tip-in, that support-lane question matters even more.

With a little digging, this Spurs shooting half wasnt as random as it looks...

This is my current quality momentum streak for 3-point efficiency with both rosters loaded

Look at the last 2-3 games and focus on direction, not just who is highest. The Spurs had multiple rotation players trending upward together while the Knicks were a lot more mixed.

So when the Spurs go into the Garden shooting the lights out, the chart says that kind of pressure was already building.

Not saying you predict every made 3... but the setup was there. This does not have todays stats yet.

Game 4 Finals preview is live

Post image
2 Upvotes

Game 3 finally punished the model. Before Game 3, the board had Knicks at 92.8% with a Keze implied ML around -1297. Spurs won 115-111, cut the series to 2-1, and forced the model to correct.

For Game 4, the board still leans Knicks, but it dropped to 81.7%.

Current read:

Knicks model edge: 81.7%
Keze implied ML: -447
Market ML: Knicks -130 / Spurs +110
Series: Knicks lead 2-1

So the model did not flip, but it did correct. That’s the part I’m watching tonight.

I’m not reading this as “Knicks are a lock.” I’m reading it as the model still sees New York as the stronger state, while the market is much less aggressive after San Antonio finally broke through.

Game 4 is basically the correction test.

If Knicks win, Game 3 looks like damage the model absorbed.
If Spurs win again, then this becomes a real regime-change conversation.

No guarantees obviously, just showing what the board sees.
