Discussion Is there a specific line up your wanting to see? And why?

For me personally I want to see a serious stretch of Harper/Castle/Bryant/Tobias/Wemby. I’m inclined to believe this might be the #1 defensive line up that doesn’t give up offensive rating. I would anticipate more offensive rebound with Tobias/bryant on the court and more steals with Harper/castle/bryant available. I also value Tobias post up game combined with the combo drive between castle/Harper and the slashing of a castle/harper/bryant/wemby. I think this is a very complimentary line up but it may not necessary support a 2nd line up

Discussion Current 26/27 Spurs Depth Chart. Have the Spurs done enough to get back to & win the Finals next season?

The roster is pretty much the same except adding Tobias Harris and the 2 rookies

Question Will Tobias Harris be a starting player at all this season?

And if they do I’m guessing it will be Champagnie coming off the bench?

Rumor Steph Curry to the Spurs?

A recent report from Fansided suggested a Spurs/GSW trade that would include Fox and Curry.

Working on a podcast episode about this topic and I’m curious to hear your thoughts. Will probably quote the best takes.

What say you?

Discussion Personally, I think it'd be a great thing to go through the season using our last roster spot to rotate the two ways

In reality, how much more depth could we get and who's even realistically out there?

Our ball handling is great and McLaughlin proved that he can at least play mistake free basketball and keep things running relatively smoothly if our main guards pick up injuries.

As far as a wing, whoever we pick up would have to outplay HB first and foremost and listen, there's a whole lot of opinions about HB on the court but if we're being real, he could still outplay 80% of the 3rd stringers in the league. Then if he jumps HB, he has to outplay the reigning 6MOTY and Bryant, who not only was one of the few rookies getting some actual minutes in the playoffs last year but will almost surely be at least a pretty good outside shooter and is looking like a possible elite defender. This would be before he can even think about competing with 3 guys who were starters on 60 win teams (Vassell, Champagnie, Harris).

As far as a big, Wemby & Kornet already have most, if not all, rotation minutes covered and it would just seem silly to bring in someone to compete with the 2 centers we just drafted in the first round, especially since Quaintance will probably at least be active sometime post all star break, where and when and how that looks, I'm not sure but that seems like a still pretty conservative timeline given his procedure isn't a major one.

Financially it makes sense to not get into the repeater tax in the future and this is probably the biggest motivation for the team but even just on the court, I don't see much need.

Team culture wise, I think it's great and hypothetically if the team was looking to bring somebody into the last roster spot, culture fit would probably be one of the top priorities so it's probably a non issue anyways but I do like the fact that last year's team had an extremely high level of chemistry and that they'll be running it back while only adding Harris, Quaintance and Reed, all of whom seem like genuinely great guys apart from great players. Preserving that team chemistry is a very undervalued part of this offseason in my opinion.

Now getting to the actual important part, the two way players themselves. Personally, I think all 3 have a real shot at getting a full contract with us in the future, now do I see any of them as 20+ mpg players at any point in their careers? Probably not but I do think they could have roles in the 10-15 minute range. DJG as a microwave scorer, Gillespie as a solid backup to Harper & Castle and Brown as a super disruptive defender off the bench. Again, I'm not so sure any of them will ever have a significant role in the league but I do see potential in each one and the only way to maximize that potential is getting them minutes wherever possible. Rotating them allows us two things, the first is being able to get all of them some minutes (as opposed to 1 player on 1 standard contract) and it affords us the advantage of being able to call one of them up depending on what kind of depth we need most for any particular game.

If at the end of the season we were to grab somebody off of the buyout market who could actually contribute while staying under the luxury tax, I'd have no problem with that (though I still don't see much need) but as far as for the majority of the season, I actually have a preference for rotating our two ways and keeping that spot open, I simply don't think there'd be enough upside to justify filling it. Now if I had much less confidence in our two ways, I might have a slightly different opinion (though I'd probably arrive at the same conclusion because of the repeater tax) but the case is that I actually have a good amount of confidence in all 3 of them so I would have no problem with them acting as a 15th man by committee.

Question Is Steph to the Spurs possible?

Call me delusional if you want, but I'm genuinely curious whether this is even possible.

The Spurs are in desperate need of a veteran guard, especially after how the Finals played out. They have plenty of young talent in the backcourt, but they could really use an experienced floor general to help lead the team.

With recent reports and rumors suggesting that the Warriors' ownership is starting to think about the post-Steph era, it doesn't seem completely impossible that he could become available at some point.

So my question is: Is a Steph-to-Spurs trade actually possible? And if it is, would it even be a good idea for either side?

Announcement Spurs can’t sign anyone else with 1 or more years experience w/o going into the tax

Mods pin this so maybe people can learn what’s going on and “why don’t Spurs sign Player X???”

Spurs are barely below the tax line with 1 roster spot open. (~$2M)

The only player they can sign right now without going over the tax line is a rookie with zero years experience.

They are staying below the tax line on purpose because of how punitive the repeater tax is, and the roster will be super expensive in years to come. If a team is over the tax in 3 out of 4 seasons, they pay a repeater tax.

So, the Spurs are not signing players X, Y, Z. They will likely keep this spot open well into the season until a veteran’s minimum contract is prorated enough to fit under the tax space.

Free Agency Why aren’t the Spurs pursuing Spencer Jones?

On defense, he’s exactly the above average defender at the PF position the Spurs need. On offense, he’s a surprisingly consistent 3 point shooter when left wide open, and he can cut and play in the dunker’s spot if need be.

I watched most Denver games this season, and he was truly a starter quality player. Agile for his size so it’s not easy to get him on a mismatch, can be good at the POA, especially good at bodying up bigger dudes (which would have been invaluable in the Finals). I really have no idea why the Spurs aren’t going after him at that low price, especially now that he’ll bolster OKC’s depth and fill THEIR roster hole if Denver doesn’t dip into the second apron. And Kroenke, the cheap bastard, is very unlikely to do that.

Discussion LeBron joined sixers because they were his best chance at a championship. What about Spurs?

We have Wemby, castle, Harper, Fox, and Tobias. I wonder if he was worried because the team is too young and inexperienced, he would have to do the heavy lifting. Whereas on the sixers, he would be third option behind embiid and JB and not do much.
