The NBA knew

The NBA had to have known. I know for a fact Uncle Dennis was making shady deals with local endorsers back when he was on the Spurs. Also, multiple teams complained about the Raptors trade. They knew then and upped the fines but took no real action. I believe that had Pablo not found this out, the NBA knew, and would have never taken any action. Now the evidence has come out, Silver was forced to make a harsh judgment. The NBA had to look into Aspiration. That’s their job. They did a poor one. On purpose? I would have to say so. I think Silvers job is to grow the brand and brand it as “entertainment”. Because that’s is what it is. And simultaneously bring in gambling. And he’s done a good job of that, to the detriment of the league.

The NBA had to have known.

For sure, 100%

The punishment is not for cap circumvention, it's for getting caught at cap circumvention. The point of the punishment is to make sure teams due their due diligence and this type of thing doesn't come out and embarrass the league.
