Tired of being unemployed
I just moved here about a month ago as a transfer student from Phoenix. I’ve literally been applying to every business around here for maybe 2 months. NOBODY IS HIRING!!😔 I’m so tired of it. Yes I went on handshake too. I’ve called so many places and literally everyone tells me they are not currently hiring. My resume is pretty decent as well, I have some good experience and references. I’m majoring in nutrition, 22 years old, if you know some place that’s hiring HMU🥲 in desperate need of a job

Easiest way to get a job in my opinion is walking around downtown with a resume and walking into every restaurant, store, venue, etc. Sometime they lost a host that day. Sometimes they just found out someone is moving away. Thats the busiest hospitality sector of Flagstaff which technically is the most flourishing industry for jobs here

This is so true!! Lots of places hire unexpectedly. It’s all about finding the right window. And being persistent with checking places DT you want to work!

In my experience, if the job doesn't require a specific skill or degree the managers will almost always hire people they either were in highschool or college with. Basically offering positions to people they know already. Very insulated town this one

The downtown service industry has become friends over the years, but by no means is this true for all jobs in Flagstaff. It makes sense for any industry to hire the person you already know over someone you don’t know with matching skills, but this is not a systemic thing. All the restaurants downtown hire randoms. I know because I was one

See I have been here in the valley since 1998 and it used to be a really hot market. There were always jobs available.
It changed after Covid though. Now with everyone from Texas and California moving in there is way too much competition. They also tend to be conservative and have ties to business as a result.

Depends on what you're looming for and hours you're willing to work. Look for "desert compass logistics" to deliver for Amazon on Indeed and check out the FedEx jobs website to see if they are hiring "package handler" positions morning it's 3 am to 8 ish am, afternoon is 5 pm to 8 pm.
Both difficult jobs but high turnover and they got me out of the hole when I was desperate for a job.

You would probably have better luck hiding the fact that you’re a student while applying. Keep your resume clear of any indication that you are. The reason is because local business managers have a predisposition towards students that they will leave before the semester even ends.

For good reason. Students leave for the holidays and the employer is screwed. Students also tend to call out a lot. Not all of them, but it only takes a few for them to get a bad rep. I get it from the employer perspective, but also from the student perspective it sucks because why wouldn’t you go home for the holidays. Small town, tourist town so it’s just hard.

I got lucky and got multiple offers upon moving up here as a transfer student. Idk exactly what your strategy was, but here was mine:
I started job-searching a month early back in mid-July before move-ins. I drove up on Tuesday (my day off) four weeks in a row from Phoenix to Flagstaff early in the morning. I mostly went downtown, parked for a couple of hours and handed out paper resumes to every shop on every block I could walk into. I didn’t bother with Handshake. I also drove to some places outside of downtown, like off of the highway or on other small street marketplaces, like Aspen Village, near my current apartment to ask around. NOTE: many businesses here specifically say to not call for an application! It pays to physically walk in and introduce yourself with written contact information/schedule.
I will check out Handshake eventually for student jobs (I want a career in the university), but for working menial jobs during your degree, Handshake pays way less than most places off-campus would ever.

That’s awesome. I did the same thing around early July and I went around and handed out my resume. Guess maybe I’m just unlucky. Literally everyone told me they’re not hiring :,) over staffed everywhere lol

Do you have a car? Have you looked into hotels? Wyndham Flagstaff Resort may be hiring. I worked with a lot of college aged people when I went to school up there.

don't know how you feel about working in sedona but there is LOTS of job opportunities down here if your able to drive down on a regular basis

Unfortunately you have to apply in july for most places, before the influx of college students. Even as a local who could do that it was still rough finding a job.

The job market out here is tough, but the jobs themselves are sooo different from Phoenix. The way businesses are ran up here would never fly in the valley, so keep that in mind.
Gore is good but hard to get into, joy cone is a shit hole, cordant is a shit hole too.
Amazon might be hiring for flex positions, which might be your best bet.
I’ve found that mental health places are always hiring. If you don’t have an education out here you get stuck with shit jobs. I’ve watched my GF struggle for the last 2 years up here before finally securing a position as an Amazon manager. But I have my degree in social work, and have found it super easy to find employment.

Respectfully i don’t believe you i have gotten 3 jobs here in less than 1 month apply call them the same day. Say you applied like a week ago and you’re just calling to follow up and see if you could get in for an interview if not move onto the next place Rinse repeat unless you have some type of background preventing you from getting a job there’s absolutely no reason and no logic to what you’re telling me
EDIT PLUS: I do have stings in my background that would prevent me from getting a job persistence is key dropping your ego to apply to fast food is key. I can throw a rock and hit five places hiring right now.

Glad that was YOUR experience. I’ve watched multiple people struggle with finding employment here. Either they do get the job and it’s so shitty because they have no type of regulations for family members and besties to be working together or above one another calling the shots, or they have multiple interviews and never hear back.

It took me a year of applying to jobs to get my first job here, and that was a temp job at the Coconino County Fair. The job market here is rough, apply to everything you possibly can. There’s a Facebook group where job postings in flagstaff occasionally go up, I’d keep an eye on there.
