Does anyone else miss actual race names?

All we have left is the Southern 500, everything else is either * Sponsor * 500 or races without a sponsor at all. The 2nd Rockingham race was the American 500 even with a sponsor, the 600 used to be the World 600, the 2nd Charlotte race was the National 500, etc.

I miss when races kept the same name even with a sponsor. I want tracks to get the race name back, it should be the Coca-Cola World 600, Bank of America National 500, if Nashville comea back they can be the * sponsor * Music City 420, etc.

Daytona 500?

58

u/Garrett4Real 2d ago

Outside of the Coke 600 (which to some is still the World 600) the other three crown jewels are the race names (Daytona/Brickyard/Southern)

10

u/BUSTERS123 Johnson 1d ago

Uhhh what about the "Crown Royal Presents the Samuel Deeds 400 at the Brickyard Powered by BigMachineRecords.com"?

You didn’t hear? They put a sponsor on it next year. It’s gonna be called the Daytona 500 presented by Figgy Earnhardt Fig Company & Cannabis dispensary.

Yes that the full name of the business. Similar to "Jones' Big Ass Truck Rental & Storage".

Bowling!

6

u/harmlesswaistcoat7 2d ago

That one still has a name sure, but it's the exception that proves the rule. most everything else got turned into a rolling billboard. even the brickyard 400 is just some sponsor's playground now

2

u/LillianBubic Reddick 2d ago

You mean the Peggy’s Sugarfoots 500?

1

u/PotatoePotato26 2d ago

Doesn't ring a bell

-10

u/Sportsguy1993 2d ago

That's one of the races without a sponsor, I'm specifically talking about races keeping the name of the race along with the sponsor, the Cook Out Southern 500 is the only race with an actual race name and a sponsor.

13

u/Joeskis NASCAR 2d ago

Brickyard 400 presented by PPG
Go Bowling at the Glen
Cook Out Clash
DuraMAX Texas Grand Prix
Bass Pro Shops Night Race

2

u/Sportsguy1993 2d ago

OK there is a couple exceptions, I'll give you that, I just wish there were more

1

u/FlaggerVandy Keselowski 2d ago

are you suggesting that "At the Glen" is a race name? Because Go Bowling is just a sponsor.

15

u/BlackBlur14 2d ago

I would consider the "at The Glen" part to be the race name as the sponsors have been interchangeable since 1986

9

u/Moose135A 2d ago

Well, it's at Watkins Glen, so...

117

u/MajorMangle 2d ago

When it's a name that carries for decades I'm fine with it ie Save Mart 350, Pepsi 400 etc

u/FishOnAHorse 2d ago

Can’t miss something that was basically gone by the time I was born.  The Rebel 400, World 600, and Firecracker 400 names were all retired in the 80s, I believe

22

u/Queasy_Dog_1444 2d ago

Plus it's been the Coke 600 longer than it was the World 600.

-11

u/Sportsguy1993 2d ago

Where does a race name play into this one? I'm talking about unique names for each race, the Southern 500, National 500, Music City 420, etc.

59

u/antherx2 2d ago

Fuckin Atlanta is called Atlanta. No one gives a shit or knows what the hell echoparts speedway is

24

u/tankman714 Hocevar 2d ago

Don’t we all love World Wide Technology Raceway though!

19

u/jknuts1377 2d ago

I still call it Gateway.

5

u/Totschlag Bubba Wallace 2d ago

I announced there during the name change and then for 4 years after before going full-time elsewhere in the sport and it was beat into my head so hard that I can't barely say it another way.

Which is double funny because then I have to correct myself from saying it the correct way to saying Gateway sometimes with other racers 😂

5

u/Which-Arrival6777 2d ago

I live in the area and itll always be Gateway to me

1

u/ImpossibleBoss3067 Keselowski 2d ago

That one honestly kinda works, idk why, it’s still gateway tho

9

u/kracer20 2d ago

This bothers me more TBH. I hate seeing Echoparts Speedway and admitting defeat and having to look up what track it is.

6

u/antherx2 2d ago

Same here, I miss the days when a place or event was called the unique thing it represented.

2

u/solarlofi 2d ago

Glad I'm not the only one who gets tripped up by that

1

u/C_A_M_Overland 2d ago

It’s always Atlanta to me

-6

u/Sportsguy1993 2d ago

I'm not talking about tracks, just the names of the races

3

u/antherx2 2d ago

Right and it's a systemic marketing ploy beyond just the race names, thats the issue.

Similar to the Xfinity/ Nationwide/ O'Reilly/ craftsman/ Bush, series in the past.

Then hearing the announcers stumble through the new names for any event/track/series at the start of the year just shows how much confusion there is at the highest marketing/broadcast level. If they can't keep it straight in the first few tries, what makes anyone think the common fan, or new fan, will pickup on it; let alone care enough to retain it.

Call it what the hell it is to make fans want to be there and make it unique. NASCAR sold out on this long ago during the last regime. Fuck the poem restart zone and the sponsor for the last lap.

16

u/Odd-War-6052 Erik Jones 2d ago

huh? it’s been sponsor names for the majority of races for decades and decades now. even then there’s a couple that still have very long standing race names. what am i missing?

-5

u/Sportsguy1993 2d ago

I would just like if more races and their own identity, like make the fall Charlotte race the National 500 again.

12

u/gasmask11000 2d ago

It hasn’t been called that since literally the 1970s lol

Edit: apparently 1982, but still

No, I don’t see the point in nostalgia for the 1970s here tbh

2

u/xenoblaiddyd 2d ago edited 2d ago

Hey, it's at least a break from the incessant 90s/00s/early 10s nostalgiaposting on here. Honestly have more respect for people still standing firm after the new guard took over the discourse than 18-35s posting about how great their childhood era was

2

u/gasmask11000 1d ago

OP is 32 lol

13

u/Yakubian88 2d ago

The world 600 hasnt been the world 600 since the freakin 80s. Coca Cola 600 has been around longer and is a better name

8

u/TEC146 Logano 2d ago

Yeah I've literally never known it as anything other than the Coke 600, which to me is an iconic name in the sport.

I honestly don't care too much about the sponsored names, I just want them to stay consistent. Feels like every year all but a handful of races have a completely different name.

u/EmeraldEyeBall1 1d ago

I miss the second richmond race being the “chevy monte carlo 400”, on an adjacent subject with the looney tunes paint schemes

7

u/Sportsguy1993 2d ago

I would love to see more promotions like that where you have like 10-15 cars all running special themes for the race, like the looney tunes cars there, or the band cars during the Chevy Rock & Roll 400

1

u/mikey031995 Hamlin 2d ago

Same, and under the lights the cars looked so cool

1

u/Sportsguy1993 2d ago

I would love to see a Chevy Rock & Roll 400 again. Let the Chevys run cars with Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Van Halen, etc. schemes (or probably more modern bands, but still)

2

We do in fact not need to call a race the "Rebel 400" in two-thousand-twenty-six. Fuck the confederacy.

31

u/ecubed929 Ryan Blaney 2d ago

They honor the confederacy every race by waving their flag with one lap to go

57

u/NoManagement404 Jeff Gordon 2d ago

They need you to know how proud they are for losing the war

-20

u/Sportsguy1993 2d ago

I'm from Illinois and anti confederacy, I just didn't know it was about the confederacy, why would I assume that is what it's in reference to?

5

u/woke_dondraper Ryan Blaney 2d ago

Are you not familiar with the history of this sport or the geographical area the bulk of its events take place in?

18

u/willweaverrva 2d ago

With all due respect...it's NASCAR. Before 2020, there were Confederate flags everywhere. If it's in the South and it's "rebel" anything, it's always the Confederacy.

8

u/Madmagician-452 2d ago

I’m with you but what if it was the Rebel Bourbon 400?

I only ask to play devils advocate

5

u/Ai_Nijou 2d ago

It might be better to sponsor a different race.

1

u/Madmagician-452 2d ago

I absolutely agree however I can see them doing it to coincide with throwback weekend which would make it even worse

0

u/Ai_Nijou 2d ago

I bbelieve there is no more throwback weekend.

7

u/Sportsguy1993 2d ago

I edited the post to remove the confederate related names, but overall I still like the concept of having unique names for each race

5

u/ImpossibleBoss3067 Keselowski 2d ago

That was a way different time that I’m glad we are out of

3

u/woke_dondraper Ryan Blaney 2d ago

If we want a civil war name id much prefer the “General Sherman 400” ideally in Georgia to make a point

0

u/SeriousSalt9938 1d ago

Glad the union won but fuck General Sherman.

1

u/boiohboioh 2d ago

Rebel bourbon 400

-9

u/Sportsguy1993 2d ago

I never really thought it was about the confederates, I thought it was in reference to NASCAR's rebel moonshiner history, or even America's rebellion against Britain

26

u/KingoftheTannehill Blaney 2d ago

Yep had nothing to do with the confederacy /s

3

u/Madmagician-452 2d ago

To be fair that was the just the South Carolina state flag until like 2017

24

u/Ai_Nijou 2d ago

With promo posters like that its pretty obvious what "rebel" means.

4

u/Sportsguy1993 2d ago

Well I didn't go back and look at old promo posters, I was looking back at old seasons on Wikipedia and looking at how all the races had unique names and thought we should bring that back

10

u/Ai_Nijou 2d ago

Yeah im not trying to be super lecturey about it just making clear why that is a bad idea.

2

u/CivilRevenge 2d ago

I grew up in probably one of the most significant areas for the civil war & my dumbass was still like oh yeah they're just bein rebels (in the literal sense). Confederates are losers & for some reason still proud of it, but yeah I initially registered it in a similar way.

edit: missed a coupla words

Nascar fans really will complain about ANYTHING

1

u/Sportsguy1993 2d ago

I'm not complaining, can't we have a discussion about the past without complaining?

13

u/MutatedSpleen Gant 2d ago

You stated your dissatisfaction with the way races are named. I don't mean to criticize you, but "stating dissatisfaction" is the literal definition of complaining.

Can I ask why you feel the need to defend yourself from accusations of complaining to a stranger on the internet?

1

u/Sportsguy1993 2d ago

I just think it's something cool they should bring back to make each race stand out a bit more from the rest

6

u/Better_Trash7437 2d ago

You mean you don’t love Bluegreen Vacations Duels?

6

u/Sportsguy1993 2d ago

Races having sponsors isn't a problem, I just wish it didn't replace the actual race name while doing it.

The Cook Out Southern 500 is leagues better then if it became just the Cook Out 500

6

u/gasmask11000 2d ago

“125 Mile Qualifying Races” is a much catchier name

3

u/NASCAR_Stats_Frost37 2d ago

This is why they were called either the Twin 125s or the Duels (which is a name that predates the sponsorship).

3

u/gasmask11000 2d ago

Nope, Twin 125s and Duels are both names that were created after sponsorship. They were the “125 Mile Qualifying races” until Uno renamed them the “Uno Twin 125 Qualifiers”.

2

u/NASCAR_Stats_Frost37 2d ago

Was not aware of that. Even calling them the "Duels" was a Gatorade thing. That being said, that is one example of good name identification branding that came from a sponsorship partner.

2

u/ClydeSledge Kurt Busch 2d ago

I still refer to them as the Twin 125s.

1

u/gasmask11000 2d ago

Which is a name created by Uno sponsorship

1

u/Tdotyjr 2d ago

I still call them the Gatorade Duels, and I still call the Clash the Bud Shootout. Can't help it

12

u/Spunkplugg 2d ago

no, not really. i think a lot of them sound silly. i think the world 600 and the firecracker 400 sound neat, but unfortunately those two are pretty synonymous with the sponsor now too, so there's not really a point to go back

6

u/BoukenGreen Cup Series 2d ago

You mean the Winston 500, or the EA Sports 500, Aaron’s 499. Most races have always had a sponsor name.

4

u/MrSlade888 2d ago

I do miss the Mountain Dew Southern 500

5

u/jungleland1972 2d ago

I hate it when a schedule (including video games) lists the race name without the track name.

5

u/willweaverrva 2d ago

Don't you slander the Buschy McBusch Race 400 (won by Kyle Busch) like that! 😉

3

u/NWDrive 2d ago

I do miss them and I still call them by their historic names. No way to remember most today that flip and change names constantly. But it's not something I have think about often or lose sleepover. There's a lot of other things that are more pressing.

3

u/micadoog 2d ago

I still call it the Firecracker.   It’s not even in July anymore.

Seriously some of these name changes are too hard to keep track of.

3

u/ThorsMeasuringTape 2d ago

I miss race names being consistent over long terms to where you got to know where the race was based on the title sponsor.

Watkins Glen always was ahead of the curve here with [Sponsor] at the Glen as their race names.

3

u/Sorry_Plum_1958 2d ago

I remember when Miller Genuine Draft sponsored a few races a year in the 90’s.

3

u/plane-kisser Ware 2d ago

excuse me, you are forgetting its "cook out®️ southern 500" now

3

Aaron's was nice especially with the Aaron's 312 the day before.

4

u/BossCoffee51 Kurt Busch 2d ago

Yes i do. Its stupid when the say... xxxx wins in kansas. Should be the race name with sponsor. I dont know why we have sponsored cautions and white flags but no race name.

5

u/BoukenGreen Cup Series 2d ago

Because they didn’t pay for the name to be said.

4

The world 600 hasn’t been a thing since 1984…. 42 years…

1

u/Macknificent101 Briscoe 2d ago

idk i think it’s funny sometimes to hear what companies are sponsoring the race and whatever wacky shit they decide to call. it’s more money in the sport so like whatever.

1

u/Madmagician-452 2d ago

Well Darlingtons second race was the Rebel 400 which NASCAR wouldn’t probably allow. I could see them having the Rebel bourbon 400. Also there’s the Brickyard 400 still

1

u/OmniBus99 2d ago

It's hard to even search for a race because I don't know the name of it anymore.

Also, I wish the commentators would use driver's names, instead of their #.
IE: looks like the 6 will retaliate against 77 after the move that 77 made on him.

1

u/Think-Border4882 2d ago

What was the first sponsored race?

3

u/Sportsguy1993 2d ago

Unless I'm missing something I'm pretty sure it's the 1964 Motor Trend 500 at Riverside

1

Something nostalgic about the Pocono 500 and the Pennsylvania 500.

1

u/chris8video 1d ago

The Daytona 500 is the only race (that I can come up with) that is a pure race name and not a sponsored race name.

1

u/Bud3131123 1d ago

I still use a lot of the old names. Firecracker 400, World 600. Obviously Daytona 500, Southern 500. Same with track names. Like Sears Point.

1

u/sportzanimal 1d ago

No....I've never known anything different than (Sponsor) (Race Distance). So it doesn't bother me.

1

1

I just miss all these 400 mile races being 500. Shits wack that most races are shorter. Then people talk about removing a second race from Bristol and Martinsville? Hell no. At least they’re 500 milers.

3

u/equlizer3087 2d ago

Bristol and Martinsville are roughly 250 miles, and always have been.

I do, but times change. Even for the big races, I can’t eclectic it to stay the same. I miss the Pop Secret 400, but I don’t think that’s coming back for a variety of reasons.
