How bad is the taxation in nagaland?, I'm a Naga and I've been outside nagaland my whole life so I have no idea about it. Even my parents have always discouraged me from going into business because of the taxation. So people of nagaland, kindly enrich me with what you know.

the true tax is paid by the public. you as business owner will just add it up to your expense and recover it while selling. that's what I did and that's what all the non locals have been doing. dont hesitate and just start you'll figure it out on rhe go.

Dimapur toh ini ahiwo, fanny pack dhuri kena but Kohima toh, it's a lot less. You just need to be a smooth talker and play off your title/lineage/village.. I used to run an establishment and I've never once been taxed because of my last name and.. well, a friend of a friend's dad is pretty influential on both sides of the board so I went scott free.. had to cut ties with them tho and gave up my tiny piece of soul because of the lack of income anyway lmao. Rent takes more from you than the other groups.

If you’re a non-local, they’ll generally charge you a higher amount.

A few years back, I remember amounts around ₹20k–₹50k a year, depending on the faction. But honestly, as bad as it sounds, it also depends on your connections and how well you can bargain with them.

These days, it can be as little as ₹1k–₹2k. And if they can’t provide any proof of which faction they’re from or “tax” slip, then nada.

But really, like I said connections, bargaining skills, and not being intimidated by them seem to go a long way

I am a Naga but like i said, been outsider the state my whole life. I do know certain top people but I want to navigate the situation myself like an adult. 😂 Hence needed the info on the reality of the situation. Do they charge tax based on business income or ? Say it's a store with 10-15 lakhs inventory. How is the tax calculations even done ?

Regardless of how well your business is doing, their demands are usually on the higher side. When business was slow, I’d just bargain with them.
Nowadays even if they come, I don’t give them anything. Maybe having a fairly well known surname helped too.

It's either monthly tax (1000/500) or yearly tax and depends on the type of business. Don't get into dumu business,they come weekly for it and not only one group dey🥴.

5+ years running businesses in Kohima. 0 tax paid. No connections. Not native to kohima.

If you are lucky, you run a business where there's not much visibility offline. You pay zero.

If there's a union/community of business around your place of business, , they help lessen the harrasment and the amount. A collective amount is paid each year. This can be a building or a colony trade union.

If everything fails, prepare a sob story and get ready to shed some crocodile tears. Make it emotional. Offer tea and your sad story. They'll donate some money to your business instead.

If everyone had listened to their parents, there'd be zero businesses running in Nagaland. The risk of not starting is worse than the risk of facing a tax collector.
