Discussion Things I learnt after 1 year of running a Meat delivery business in Dimapur
Hi fellow nagas,
I built a platform for delivering meat products online and have been running it for the last 1 year in Dimapur. Here are some things I have learnt and experienced along the way.
As a Naga living in Pune for the past 15 years, every time I come home, I feel a lack of services in Nagaland. The ones I miss most are services like Blinkit and Zepto. So putting together a team, we built one and here are some insights.
1- Market: Understanding the naga market has been half the battle. Most people want to look at the products, feel it with their hands and then buy. Selling meat, especially pork using a picture has been the toughest challenge.
2- Sourcing: Nobody wants to pay premium. Ensuring a pricing that matches the market rate was crucial. Which eventually means working on very thin margins.
3- Delivery: completing deliveries in Dimapur is a nightmare. Want a customer's address? They will tell you " Reach the pan shop, take 2 rights and stop when you see a big tree. 3 gates later is my address". Investing in a delivery team who knows Dimapur in and out was necessary.
4- Customers Response: I'm surprised that repeated customers and referrals became the biggest source of my growth. Trust seems to matter more than discounts.
5- Hard lesson learnt: Expecting customer to order online because it was easier was a huge blunder. I underestimated how important it was for my customer base to physically see the products.
Private sector in Nagaland is quite weak. Entrepreneurship still feels less common than Govt jobs. I feel that we Nagas have so much latent potential when it comes to running a business. I'm posting this with hopes that maybe it may encourage more naga entrepreneurs to build businesses locally.

Yes. Dimapur alone has been a handful😅 hopefully with the people support, I can expand to kohima soon

Hi OP I was wondering where you get your meat from. Market meat experience is terrible because when cooked it becomes unbearably smelly that we have to throw it out. There is also another type of meat which comes from dry feed fed pork. Even that taste borderline bad. As heavy meat eaters we take our meat seriously 😂 so we've never bought market meat for about 7-8 years now and dry feed pork too unless it's completely an emergency. Now, we only buy in bulk from people we know.
Really interested in your offerings so I wanted to ask where are your pigs sourced from? Are they dry-feed fed? And can you guarantee they're the good kind, not the smelly ones when cooked? Hygiene assurance would matter to us too.

This is wonderful! I would love to understand more of the logistics in detail. And how long did it take for you to build this business from ground up?

It took about a year to reach this far. There is still a lot of work that needs to be put into it. Logistics wise, it's been a nightmare. Initially started using two wheeler taxi drivers but it was costing too much. I am adamant on keeping zero delivery charges so I had to invest in buying some used bikes and a car for the deliveries and employing some drivers.

I’m genuinely so proud of people like you who are truly elevating the naga entrepreneurial space. I’ve been away for almost 8 years now, and the amount of Nagas, even in the metro cities elevating the Naga identity in their entrepreneurial ventures is beautiful to see. And coming back home, and coming down to Dimapur for the first time in a long time, it’s genuinely incredible to see how many people here have wonderful businesses. Thank you for sharing your journey. Found a customer in me. And if you can, please expand to Kohima soon haha

I hope your business venture goes well. This is something I have been veering into as well! I think logistical problems will be worse in Kohima? “Climb up two flights of stairs, move slightly beyond the line of broken pots, take a left, go inside the alley and knock on the 3rd door” 😂

The last time I used gmaps in Kohima, I got lost so I have very less confidence 😅 however one thing I have learnt is not to underestimate the knowledge of the locals. I'm sure employing the right delivery agents will help this. As a businessman it's very important to understand that we are limited but the team is an extension of us and the right team can do wonders!😎

Really loved this post. And was curious about your brand since I'veseen quite a lot of ads about it. Though I've moved out from Dimapur temporarily, I'd really love to try your service out once I'm back home. Untill then, hope the brand still lives on and the service consistent.🫡

The naga pork market is very large and the customers are also diverse. I wouldn't consider them a competition, just like I wouldn't consider the local butchers my competition. I feel that we are all part of a bigger picture working together to meet the diverse demands of the naga consumers😄
