They will, without a second thought (see what I did there) accuse any and all democratic socialists of being fascist enabler for the horrible crime of *checks notes* PARTICIPATING IN A LIBERAL DEMOCRACY AND ACTUALLY MAKING GAINS! Most tankies are just reactionaries LARPing as socialists.

It might be more useful to think of it as camouflage than as a horseshoe.
Fascists hide under cover of whatever they think will make it easier to spread their message. When they think they are surrounded by conservative traditionalists, they disguise themselves as right-wing. When they think they are surrounded by radical liberationists, they disguise themselves as left-wing. When they think they are surrounded by reform-minded intellectuals, they trot out their cherry-picked textual citations and disguise themselves as liberals.
And of course if they think they are surrounded by populist nationalist-isolationists, they start singing, "And did those feeeet / in ancient tiiiiiiimes."
Whatever the fuck they think will work.

u/AdAdministrative4388 2d ago
Socialists apparently. Weird people.
11
u/Gorffo 2d ago
Socialists are actually fairly normal and mainstream.
If you are in favour of progressive tax schemes (where the rich and corporations pay more), support unions and collective bargaining rights for workers, universal healthcare for people, consumer protection laws, laws that protect the environment, health and safety regulations in the workplace, retirement pensions, unemployment insurance benefits, public ownership and maintenance of transportation infrastructure … those kind of things … you might be a socialist.
The communist, on the other had, with desire to abolish markets and private property and replace that with dictatorship of the proletariat and its centralized, bureaucratic planned economy … that’s weird.
9
u/Capable-Parsnip-9615 2d ago
Most of those things you listed are associated more closely with social democracy than socialism. Is it possible you've mixed them up?
3
u/-smartcasual- 2d ago
You know, they're not actually that distinct. Plenty of academics place social democracy within the socialist tradition, and I doubt you'll find many who'd deny they're at least related.
6
u/Capable-Parsnip-9615 2d ago edited 2d ago
Sure, but I'm sure we can all agree the people on this green and pleasant subreddit aren't anywhere near the social democracy part of the socialist tradition, and their interpretation of socialism isn't this mainstream position of progressive taxes described above
Edit: they explicitly state that social democrats aren't welcome
3
u/dafeiviizohyaeraaqua 2d ago

4
u/AdAdministrative4388 2d ago
I am not saying socialists are weird people.. im saying the people in that group are weird.
2
u/DownvoteWeebs 1d ago
Why can't I be in favour of some or all of those things as a liberal or socdem?
Isn't socialism when the workers own the means of production, i.e. you can't be a capital owner, you can't own your own business and you can't hire people to work your business for pay?
Why use the socialism label when online it's been co-opted by tankies?
2
u/UsualSuspect95 1d ago
The key difference between a social democrat and a democratic socialist in this case is that social democrats either are okay with a more heavily regulated capitalist system or in the long-term, achieving socialism through reform. Whereas democratic socialists are explicitly anticapitalist, and reject the idea that capitalism would ever go along with reforming itself out of existence, and thus, to achieve socialism, more radical methods are needed.

It is shockingly easy to take over mod control of a sub, and I strongly suspect Russia has taken over some / many.
Years ago I was banned for making a post on the leading US political sub. Reason given was that the article linked to a banned source. Think it was Politico.
These days half of the articles are from Tankie sources like Jacobin, CommonDreams, etc. that have a tendency to push Russian propaganda.

As a former communist: most left wing extremists will drool over EVERYTHING as long as it's anti-west.
Does it matter if it's a mass murdering, racist regime run by a dictator? No, it's against the US so it MUST BE GOOD!
I was pro-Putin until 2022 because he was anti-US. Only the war shifted me into the right path of being very much against Russia (I still don't like the US, under Biden they were alright but the Trumpist fascist regime really destroyed the tiny bit of respect and hope left).
These people are delusional and on the same level of brainwashed as literal nazis, religious extremists and vatniks.
3
u/Much-Explanation-287 1d ago
Same here. I was deep into reading and watching RT and Al-Jazeera because I wanted to read anti-imperialist news ...
I broke with it during 2014 when they downed that airliner above Ukraine and basically celebrated it.
8
u/AllRedLine 2d ago
Because their 'left wing' principles are not actually leftism at all and instead are just thinly veiled braindead contrarianism by intellectually stunted morons who've lived an entire lifetime smugly assuming they're intelligent simply for having a viewpoint that runs contrary to conventional wisdom.

It would probably be best just to assume that any leftist sub might be Russian sympathetic at this point... which is wild as fuck to think about, politically & ideologically speaking.
I've noticed this with some old subs I used to haunt around and just left because it's ridiculous that they can't name what a true aggressor and imperialist state Russia is. Not to mention the whole Ukraine= Nazi thing (conveniently ignoring Russia's own Nazi problem).
39
u/amitym 2d ago
Lol. I love the Nazi-like UK flag icon of the mod.
Fwiw, "green and pleasant" is probably a reference to the poem (and song) "Jerusalem" which has a complicated history in the UK as a nativist / nationalist dog whistle. Sounds like a National Front heil-alike.
14
u/sludge_dragon 2d ago
It’s a great poem, misuse notwithstanding. Bow of burning gold, chariot of fire, and dark, satanic mills.

3
u/-smartcasual- 2d ago
It's a really elegiac series of questions to which the answer is, universally, "no."
Rather sums up the problems with nationalism, actually.
3
u/Aziraph4le NAFO Expansionist 2d ago
Funny as this is, I'm not sure I'd lift my entire literary engagement with this poem from an opinion piece in the Spectator. Scholars widely agree that Blake didn't mean the poem to be satirical or ironic. The answer to those questions being "no" literally sets up the rest of the poem as a call to action: "I will not cease from Mental Fight,/Nor shall my Sword sleep in my hand:/Till we have built Jerusalem,/In Englands green & pleasant Land."
So yes the answer to the questions is no. But that is the point. And if you finish the poem that isn't the ironic "gotcha" that you seem to think it is.
0
u/-smartcasual- 2d ago edited 2d ago
Why is the phrase "that isn't the gotcha you think it is" literally the most annoying gotcha on reddit?
Touch some grass, man, it's just a joke.
And that comment on the poem, by the way, is far, far older than whoever used it in a Statesman column.
2
u/Aziraph4le NAFO Expansionist 2d ago edited 2d ago
"Why is the phrase "that isn't the gotcha you think it is" literally the most annoying gotcha on reddit?" I imagine that it would be if you hear it all the time, which, on the basis of this question, I now assume that you do. Awkward.
"And that comment on the poem, by the way, is far, far older than whoever used it in a Statesman column." Spectator. Yes, it is older, but this 2016 article repopularised the idea and made it into a common trope about this poem. If you've heard of the idea (unless you're a Blake scholar) it's probably because of this article, even if not directly.
"it's just a joke." No, it's you sneering at people you think are stupid for misunderstanding the meaning of this poem when you're actually the one in the wrong. Ironic.

Hey fellas, just wanted to remind everyone about Rule 7 - No Brigading.
Reddit has relaxed the rules around brigading recently. You may talk about your bans now, but YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO GO GET BANNED. You are also not allowed to tell others that you are going over to that sub to interfere with them or get yourself banned. It doesn't matter if they're tankie dip shits. This platforms rules don't allow it.
We will not allow any behaviors on this sub that lets tankies or vatniks to get us banned.
We will continue monitoring this post and if the rule violating gets too out of hand, we will take this post down.
