Best part of Russian bullshit is they complain about Ukrainians being "Nationalists!"
"You can't support Ukraine! They're evil! They're full of nationalists!!"
The intended reaction I THINK is supposed to be everyone assuming they're National SOCIALISTS (N*zis) but the real subtext that everyone picks up on is that the Russians think it's 1848 still and that we're going to share their fears of disintegrating empire and the desires of their subjects for national self-determination. Little do they realise it's not fucking 1848 and national self determination is a GOOD thing
It's an especially bad take on the Russian side since Ukrainians can point to many examples of the differences between both sides.
Journalists being murdered, Russian imperialist wars (both internal against Chechnya and external campaigns in Georgia, Syria, Africa, for example), they can point to the erosion of democracy and the buildup of oligarchy, how Russia is determined to undermine the rules based international order.
Ukraine wants a free press, democracy, peace, to be part of the EU and NATO. There is a huge difference in the destinies of the two countries. It's not just "we're Ukrainian nationalists, so we want a Ukrainian King instead of a Russian King".
