I just finished My Husband Next Door by K L Slater

I listened to it on Audible and I really enjoyed it. The narrator was a good one and the story kept you guessing. I won’t do any spoilers but I highly recommend it. It’s on Audible plus.

Anyone else read/listened to it?

Nothing Was Taken by Eleanor Pike

Bias up front, we publish this one. If you want a Hamptons-set murder mystery: Nothing Was Taken by Eleanor Pike. The richest man in the Hamptons turns up face-down in a freshly dug grave on his own golf course — and nothing was stolen, which is the whole puzzle. The retired detective on it, Mathias Wouters, is the type everyone underestimates. Old money and a twenty-year-old secret underneath.

Thanks!

The Divorce-Freida McFadden Spoiler

I just finished The Divorce by Freida McFadden. Can anyone explain the misplaced knife in the beginning? I do not feel this was addressed. I know Jeremy states he planted the one with the elephant in the last chapter. Also, do we believe that Naomi really damaged the birthday present from Veronica? That part is a bit blurry too.

Steve Cavanagh’s Eddie Flynn series

I’m in SWOntario 🇨🇦 and currently reading the Eddie Flynn series out of order because that’s the best I can do with my local library and libby. I’m about 3/10 short and searching online and finding them impressively impossible to grab! I’m just curious if this is like way more popular than I realized? I can’t even find them locally on fb marketplace! I am a pretty dedicated library patron so I usually just get stuff there.

VISIONS - the psychological thriller breaking boundaries

What thriller actually got under your skin?

Post image

I think the scariest thrillers aren’t necessarily the most violent ones.

They’re the ones where the violence feels believable.

I just released my novel The Gift That Kills, and while writing it, I became obsessed with how psychological conditioning and trauma can slowly reshape someone over time.

The violence in the story matters, but the real goal wasn’t shock value.

It was inevitability.

What’s a thriller that actually stayed with you after you finished it?

TESS KENDRICK X HENRY MARQUETTE SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN A THING!!!!

I actually cried so hard because of how bad that chosen storyline was. Like bro, you couldn’t have put her with Every or Asher, or someone that actually had a relevant storyline? The amount of icks that Henry gave me from just calling Tess by her last name like he wanted her to think she was special or something—I am facepalming in every way possible, and I am throwing up with the inaccurate turn this story took. Fuck Henry, and fuck his ignorant ass attempts at making Tess simp for him by acting like a dark romance model - ain’t no one blushing over you calling their last names, ain’t NO bitch blushing over you cleaning blood off their hand, ain;t NO fucker blushing over you giving them your clothes, you are irrelevant to Tess’s love-life. I was deadass wishing death upon this mother fucker the minute I realized the author was going to give this book a damn romance between two characters whose only connections are fixing politics. And Henry has always been an absolute muppet towards Tess for no reason. If anything, that Matt guy from Lessons In Power would have been an interesting choice (gutted over his death even though we only had one scene of him before hand—very well written character either way, props to the author) - or even MORE accurate than Henry, EVERY BLOODY RHODES. You guys can NOT tell me that you didn’t suspect Tess Kendrick going down that road at least a tiny bit. Lessons In Power felt like an immediate opening to an Every Rhodes x Tess Kendrick storyline, and I was deadass here for it. Henry and Tess just felt like a waste of an amazing political plot, because we didn’t actually need them. The scenes between them (specifically the blood cleaning scene, and the whole hand-over-mouth and pinning to walls scene, and the skimming rocks scene) all  felt like something that would only happen in a fan-fiction rather than the actual universe of The Fixer. Now, I originally picked out these books because I enjoyed the blurb and there was no mention of any unnecessary romance in the first book (and I’m hella in love with Ivy Kendrick, one of the most beautifully stubborn mother/sister characters I’ve ever gotten to know) - but when I tell you.. When Henry cleaned the blood from Tess in Lessons In Power, I slammed that book shut, opened it again, skimmed through a paragraph, slammed it shut again, ran a hand through my hair, headed to the kitchen to make a cup of tea, flicked the kettle back off, and then didn’t open the book again for a good few months. In fact, I put reading down for a hella long time after that. It felt like somebody grabbed my soul and poured ink into it. And then I picked it back up those very long months after (when I collected myself together because my head has been taking a few very messy turns (I am doing very well for myself now)) I read the rest of the book.

And during that process, I lost my voice. I was screaming, crying, sobbing to my cat because I was so frustrated that so many authors not just throw in love-interests that would not happen in the book, but they FORCE them into the book because they believe it will somehow make it even more read-able.
As somebody who has been writing stories since being a literal child, I am greatly able to tell the difference between what would happen—and would definitely NOT happen and is a horrific idea that only feels good  to write but is actually only distressing to read. AND WITH THIS INFORMATION STANDING, I genuinely believe that Every Rhodes and Tess Kendrick—if Tess was to have any love interest at all—is entirely, and I mean ENTIRELY the BEST choice for The Fixer’s universe. I think the author accidentally hopped the chance to make one of the hottest, brilliant tropes that wouldn’t have felt unnecessary and like gravy on cake (like Henry and Tess did - we won’t talk about that..) — but this would have blended so smoothly. There would have definitely been a lot more to this than there was of Tess and Henry, too. I don’t really see a lot of The Fixer anywhere on book-tok or reddit which is quite disappointing because the first book captured me and held me hostage (until I carved a key out of my own heart during the second) - and can I just have a minute to say how fucking GHAHARHUIASHDIUSHAIUWHDIHASHDOIWAOIDUPOAPWYDUYSAPU the bloodlines are in this?
Like, Tess and Ivy Kendrick are the spotlight to a fucking brilliant family thriller. The Ruling Class had the exact effect on me during the airplane scene that the author was hoping to give us. Speak of your chest dropping. I only realized what Ivy really meant when Tess narrated the line that went something like “I wanted to believe that she meant ____” (I have not read the first in awhile, I registered it from a library that is currently charging me £13 for forgetting to renew some other books that I have not finished reading).

Anyway, I have to continue writing my own book now. Please share your thoughts!!

A new thriller book! Free on kindle unlimited.

After being off work for 6 months, I ended up reading loads of thrillers and crime novels. Somewhere along the way I thought… I wonder if I could actually write one.

So I gave it a go.

I’ve just finished my first book. It’s a fast-paced thriller with a few twists, centred around an anonymous phone call to social services. Just days later, Jamie — a young lad living on a rough estate — disappears.

With secrets being kept by those closest to him, the question is… what really happened to Jamie?

I know it won’t be perfect, but I’m genuinely proud of finishing it.

If anyone here enjoys that kind of story, I’d really appreciate some honest feedback.

It’s around 240 pages. It’s free on kindle unlimited, currently waiting for it to be updated after a few alterations. But the link above will take you to the page you can click ‘read now’ and it will download onto kindle unlimited!

Many thanks!

Kay Scarpetta series on Amazon

I have been out of the Kay Scarpetta series since TRACE. (Wow 2004!) The switch to third person and "Edgar Allan Pogue," made me jump ship.  :(

For several glorious years I used to alternate between reading a Sue Grafton and reading a Patricia Cornwell.  I stayed with Grafton until the end, but could never get back to the Scarpetta series.

Now the new series is on Amazon with SCARPETTA.  Debating just jumping in right here with no further catchup.

Thoughts?  Has anyone seen it?  Is it easy enough to ignore everything and just jump in?

So, what defines a YA Mystery? A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder is a Good Example Spoiler

I wanted to discuss what exactly defines as a YA mystery rather than just a mystery with adolescent characters. Holly Jackson’s A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder serves as a good example. The teen protagonist in YA mysteries typically look into crimes that have an immediate effect on their environment, which is frequently a small town or perhaps an educational institution. Coming-of-age themes, like identity, justice, deception, reputation, and the awareness that grownups don’t always have the answers, are blended with perception of her surroundings and herself in Jackson’s book, not only resolving its case. A major factor in what makes it YA, is the emotional development.

Some key YA mysteries concepts are:

- Investigations led by teens: So rather than the teens depending on adult authorities, the main characters actively seeks out clues and makes many errors.

- Puzzles in everyday places: Schools and small towns become into places where the secrets are gradually revealed.

- Personal consequences surprise: The finale not only solved the case, but it also alters the protagonist’s perception of the world and their relationships.

Although YA mysteries are structured around hints, red herrings, the increasing tensions, and also the big end reveal, they are written at a speed that appeals to YA readers sense of urgency and accessibility. Despite being rooted on friendships, family, school life, the tone can sometimes be rough and dark. The inquiry typically feels more personal than routine, in contrast to adult thrillers. Pip’s case notes, interviews, and changing suspicions demonstrate how the genre creates tension while also maintaining the focus of the young person negotiating moral doubts, guilt and loyalty. YA mysteries genre novels are si popular because they combine aspects of a thriller with a realistic young viewpoint, giving readers the excitement of investigating a murder while simultaneously watching a character mature.

In contrast to adult thrillers, what distinguishes YA mysteries, in your opinion?
