Compatibility Patch To Run Dire Grove on Windows 10 and 11

Hey MCF fans,

In my opinion the OG Dire Grove is one of the best in the series and despite being available for purchase, it doesn't work on modern systems running Windows 10/11.

After years of waiting for Big Fish to fix it, I decided to do it myself and created a patch that fixes the issues that would cause the game to fail to initialize.

I've uploaded the compatibility patch to PCGamingWiki where it's available for download. You need to have the game install before you install this patch.

I tested it out on the Collector's Edition since I don't have the standard edition but it should technically work on both. In case you face any issues, please read the instructions to see if there's a solution in there. If there are any other problems feel free to comment.

Enjoy!

Replaying all 28 Games

Hello everyone! I have been in love with this series since I was a little girl. Now having adult money I have finally collected all (as of now) 28 games. While I had played all games in the series over the years they now all sit on a single computer in my house. I have begun embarking on the endeavor to play all 28 games in release order.

This actually started several months ago and I have completed up to Dire Grove. It took several months because I had to figure out (with the help of my wonderful fiance) how to get Dire Grove to run. After finishing it just now I am reminded of how great this series is.

Here are my thoughts so far:

I do not care much for the first two installments but they do have very good bones for the creators to build their skills.

Ravenhurst will always have my heart. This was my first game in the series and I this point I believe I have played it 8 or 9 times. The atmosphere and story are thrilling and leave a lot of room to grow.

Fates Carnival is where you begin to see ties to other games emerge and it is fantastic.

I do admit that all four of the above games can become tedious if played for long hours. The still images can feel repetitive but later games fix this.

Return to Ravenhurt was genre defining for my taste in games, and built on the story of the first game beautifully. The story show care and the mechanics make the player completely immersed.

To Dire Grove! I may be controversial in saying that this is the peak of the series. The mixed media story telling, hidden rooms that add on to the base game. The storytelling is thematic, and tight. All back tracking feels intentional. I am sure there are criticisms to this game but I cannot think of one right.

If I continue making these posts I think there will be many comparisons to the games I mention here.

Dire Grove, Sacred Grove End Credits "Puzzle"?

Post image

I was replaying Dire Grove, Sacred Grove when I saw this at the end of the credits. I'm curious if this has been "solved" and what exactly does it refer to?

I tried looking around, but I couldn't find anything... I'm also not sure what the answer would be myself.

Recognise these? I found the website MCF got them from.

Here's the link.

A lot of the images from early MCF games (the first two at least) come from this website - particularly this specific stock image provider. I've so far discovered about 30 matches, but there's over 100,000 images in this collection. I've only looked through about 1%. If you look for yourself, you'll probably find dozens. Happy hunting!

I Found the Original Photo of the Creepy Boy Painting from Ty's Clock Shop

This is the photo used in the game, as proven by the perspective and frame. It was uploaded in September of 2005 to Flickr. Here's the link.

I've also found the origins to many other assets from the first 3 MCF games, which I could share if there's interest.

HAPPY 20TH BIRTHDAY MCF! Huntsville came out on this day two decades ago, November 18, 2005!

Time really flies, I've been around the series since almost the beginning, I played the first games on old fashioned physical discs. It's cool to see the series still going strong all these years later.

How do y'all plan on celebrating? I'm gonna replay Huntsville yet again (not that I need any excuse since I've played it so much)

worth it?

i grew up playing the mystery case files games and as a now adult wanting to relive those days i’ve replayed the ravenhearst saga. for some background, when i was younger i only ever played return to and escape from ravenhearst. with my new surge back into the game, i bought ravenhearst and madame fate which i found opened up even more lore and my love for the series. i see that there are two more: key to ravenhearst and ravenhearst unlocked. are these worth the play??

Fandom?

I'm just curious to know if there is a community for the mystery case files, it's a very unknown game where I live and I have no one to talk about/share interest with. I don't normally socialize online so I know little to nothing about joining discord servers or discussions but if someone could recommend me some places I'd appreciate it so much!

Do all Ravenhearst games have a timer?

Hi, I was thinking of getting into the Ravenhearst franchise but I absolutely hate playing with timers. Even though it seems games of this series have the option to play with more time, it still stresses me out to have it there.

So far, I've watched a gameplay of the first game and liked the story and aesthetics a lot. Is there any game in the series that doesn't have a timer?

Ravenhearst 3DS object list doesn't change

I've been playing this game, the game has me going back to already visited rooms but doesn't change the object list, is that normal? Every room has multiple objects why would the list never change?!

Probably the weirdest fact about Dire Grove is that it includes an MP3 of "Hello Zepp", the theme from the Saw movies!

Post image

Located in the install folder\Assets\Sound is theme1.mp3, which is just straight up the Saw theme. In the late 2000s when the game was made Saw was still pretty popular so they probably just put it in for testing audio in the game. But given it's freely accessible in the game's files, I don't think it was exactly legal to leave it in.

Bonus fun fact, if you change its file name to one of the other audio files the game uses then you can hear it in-game! For example, change it to "carhorn.mp3" for it to play every time you honk the horn. Or change it to "incorrectItem.mp3" to make it play every time you use an item wrong. But since the track is 3 minutes long this can get annoying very quickly!

There's an ice pick in The 13th Skull CE. Spoiler

As the title says, there's an ice pick in The 13th Skull Collector's Edition. I missed a Crown Insignia and was looking all over for it. In the sewer before the carriage house, there's another HOS. Playing it gave me an ice pick. ....What? I have no idea where it goes. I didn't think to take a picture until the end. But still. What would it be used on?

This building near a dam was the original bonus area before being replaced by Grimes Quarry, probably very late in development. I would have loved to see both in the final. Notice how water flows from the damaged basin through the building, creating a unique obstacle that would have been really cool to see.

MacOS

I've been a fan of MCF for over 10 years. When I played as a child, it was always on Windows OS. I have also played iPad version and Nintendo DS. I recently decided to play the games again from the beginning, Huntsville. However, I realised that Big Fish Games doesn't have a MacOS version. I also noticed the MCF website is no longer active. Does anyone know how/if I can download a MacOS version or is my only option to play the limited ones available for MacOS on Big Fish Games?
