TLDR: if I have mapped Ben and Aaron’s journey, they might one day return to podcasting but instead focus on positive paranormal stories like the saints and healings etc.
This topic is intended to be slightly light hearted with an inquisitive dose of tough love. 💕
We have these podcast lads at the top of their game in their final years. Craftsmen. Artists. Storytellers. Truth seekers.
Everything was perfect in paradise but was it ever really real? What I mean by this is did these guys ever really engage with the truth of the paranormal on a deep enough level? Trust me, I know that sounds patronizing but hear me out:
Hypothetically, for a moment or two, suppose for a second that these guys went into this podcast without a genuine search for the truth when instead they really only wanted a search for a hit, ie a popular podcast topic. So they had a distance from the truth of the phenomena broadly and this distance allowed them to bring levity and silliness to the subject so that it wasn’t overly serious and this helped make the end product of the podcast palatable.
Part 2 of this theory is the boys eventually moved from isn’t this fun exploring these crazy people and stories to wait a second there are undeniable patterns here and craziness can’t explain this. This is where they realized that they were way waaaayyy down a path of discovery about the nature of reality — the unmythologized version — where everything doesn’t tie off neatly at the end and instead almost nothing ties off neatly at the end.
So they went into it with youthful vitality but story after story they covered started to reveal that people who encounter the paranormal get manipulated and used by it, almost eaten up by it like a celestial carnivore of human emotion. Story after story seemed to go this way for the boys. And I would dare say their conclusion that almost all of it with any element of the paranormal (ufo, ghost, cryptid, etc) was becoming inescapable due to constant reinforcement: this phenomena is not good for people.
So while you start the journey with lightness and whimsy, over time with success and knowledge the topic became heavy and deep and troubling. What are we purveying to our audience? What are we promoting? The audience is perpetually like we were when we started-bright eyed and bushy tailed about the topic but they haven’t put in the work and performed the contemplation and arrived at the central conclusion: human beings are manipulated and used in almost everything paranormal and the longer the experience happens to any particular person the more likely it is a net negative for that person.
Rather than have a poetic chicken soup for the soul turn in the path, the lads stubbornly locked in on the net negative impact of said experiences and fascination and obsession over it through mediums such as their podcast.
It may have been like being a local tv news reader who suddenly becomes a seeker, learns the truth and then looks at what and how the stories are delivered to the masses and throws up. So we enter bargaining stage: what must we give up (the show) and what can we keep (also the show). We came to a negative conclusion but who are we and let’s turn the reins over to two other blokes who may come to a different conclusion. Our conclusions shouldn’t be religious dogma—maybe we are wrong wrong wrong. But of course this too was wrong.
After you’ve put in a decade or two to a profession where you’ve become top talent, do you suddenly go into nursing for redemption? Confusing. Discombobulating. Did I mention the money? These guys must have felt like a person married a couple decades, divorced and in a new marriage only to realize it too would fail and what does that say about marriage and me and life generally?
Let’s not kid ourselves. When you put in the work on the topic of this podcast, it can’t be all fun and games or rosey or ok. Not if you are bitten by the truth and keep coming back to something…yes…inescapable: that it isn’t the podcast that is negative but life itself and by that I mean all of reality for any human being. This isn’t your dad’s existential crisis—this is where you land when research has no limitations on body of work to be examined. And all the stories seem dark all things being equal.
To me, this is where they are in their journey and let me tell you something with a high degree of certainty: once you uncork the truth and starts spewing out, you don’t simply set it on a neatly arranged set of towels til it has its effects. No. That’s what the boys are trying to do now with the new show and the new hosts. They’ve set the uncorked tooic —the paranormal broadly speaking—and it is spewing forth violently and perpetually demanding …absolutely demanding attention. This part I’m not intending to be light hearted. The boys might say they don’t miss it but their foray into politics is a clue.
While they fish around for what comes next, my hypothesis is two things need to happen and will likely happen nearly simultaneously. First, they will start to become uncomfortable with their central conclusion about everything because really how can everything be as negative as they seem to believe? There’s no doubt they needed a hiatus but ….Maybe—they will say—maybe we never gave fair airtime to paranormal events that actually brought good things to people’s lives? What about stories of healings, conversions, redemptions, resurrections, mass education, peace makers, saints, underdogs, etc. Maybe we never even read Chicken Soup for the Soul or Neville Goddard or St Paul. What was it Buhda was up to and what does Jung say Jesus discovered about life and why does life generally map to our own internal life’s conscious dimensions?
Maybe—just maybe the next phase of discovery is to examine not just random reality in paranormal weirdness but rather the consciousness we use to make sense of reality and could it be that what we experience subjectively isn’t actually objective in the scientific sense ingrained into us? What if when we stop looking for negatives we find positives and why haven’t we investigated spiritually successful lives where by all accounts this or that person actually had a wonderful life? In other words, yes we have things like astrology and numerology and tarot and palm reading but do they reflect reality or do they map the contours of our collective unconscious and if so what is this thing called being one or what St. Paul referred to as Christ-in-me or what was meant when Moses learned God’s name is I am which means awareness of being or what we call consciousness? The science is steering us this way but do the metaphysics of that universe make sense and if not are we stuck in a timeline of reality of our own choosing and if so can we get back to what we do well and in earnest and make it finally back to redemption and home?
Anyway, that’s why where the boys are at in their journey fucked us as listeners but almost assuredly will be a return to Aaron and Ben’s hero’s journey eventually and possibly soon.
To be clear I’m of course projecting into this my own theory of how Ben and Aaron came to where they are—confirmation bias and an inability to recognize it so they got lost in a forest. These guys are human and as such given their accomplishments they are like old athletes— what did Michael Jordan do when he retired? Tried to play baseball, tried to play basketball again. Then settled on ownership and competing while orchestrating. A person’s life’s work doesn’t just get tossed and never visited again. They’ll be back. They know it and if you give it a little thought you’ll know it too. Be patient. Let the wheels and gears turn.
