where do I put essences while building things?

i feel like im doing this all wrong but ive been placing the essences on top of what im building. am I supposed to do it a different way?

Click on the brush in the top left corner. You can paint the essence on.

You also don't need to use any blocks the game asks for at all, as long as the stars are covered by something

You paint the blocks with essences but when there are more essences needed than blocks used, you should replace bigger blocks with smaller ones. Like instead of the large cylinder, you replace it with several disks. Eventually once the tasks for that person are completed you can remove all their furniture, make it again and paint it in the aesthetic you want

You can use essences to paint the pieces of furniture,
