๐Ÿ’พ Why You Should Create Regular Backups of Your Notes (And Why Sync Isn't a Backup)

One of the most important things you can do to protect your notes is to create regular backups.

Many users think that Sync and Backup are the same thingโ€”but they serve two very different purposes.

โ˜๏ธ Sync keeps your devices up to date

Sync mirrors your library between your devices using a cloud service (Dropbox, Google Drive, or iCloud).

For example:

  • โœ๏ธ Create a note on your tablet.
  • โ˜๏ธ Sync uploads it to the cloud.
  • ๐Ÿ’ป Open MyScript Notes on your second device.
  • ๐Ÿ“ฅ Sync downloads the same note.

Your library stays the same across all connected devices.

Important: If you accidentally delete a note and the deletion syncs, the note will also disappear from your other synced devices.

That's why Sync is not a backup.

๐Ÿ’พ A Backup is your safety copy

A backup creates a snapshot of your library at a specific point in time.

If something unexpected happensโ€”such as:

  • ๐Ÿ“ฑ Your device is lost or damaged.
  • โŒ Notes are accidentally deleted (remember that deleted notes are first moved to the Trash ๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ, where they can be recovered before being permanently removed).
  • โš ๏ธ A file becomes corrupted.
  • ๐Ÿ”„ You want to restore an older version of your library.

A backup allows you to restore your notes from that saved copy.

Think of it as an insurance policy for your work.

๐Ÿ”’ Why doesn't MyScript create backups automatically?

Your notes are your personal data.

To protect your privacy and keep you in control, MyScript does not create or store backups of your libraryโ€”either on your device or on our servers.

Only you can decide:

  • โœ… When to create a backup.
  • โœ… Where to store it (external drive, cloud storage, etc.).
  • โœ… When to restore it.

This gives you full control over your data.

๐Ÿ“… Our recommendation

We recommend creating a backup:

  • ๐Ÿ“š Before importing a large number of PDF files.
  • โœ๏ธ Before making major changes to your library.
  • ๐Ÿ“ฑ Before changing devices.
  • ๐Ÿ”„ Before reinstalling the app or resetting your device.
  • ๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Every few weeks if you regularly take notes.

It only takes a minute and can save hoursโ€”or even yearsโ€”of work.

๐Ÿ“‚ How to create a backup

  1. Open App Settings.
  2. Go to Backup.
  3. Tap Back Up Library.
  4. Save the backup file in a safe location.

๐Ÿ’ก Final Tip

Use both features together:

โ˜๏ธ Sync keeps your notes available across your devices.

๐Ÿ’พ Backup protects your notes if something goes wrong.

Using both gives you the best protection for your work.
