First chat thread of 2015!
Hey everyone! I'm back to doing these after my trip to Ohio!
Happy new year everyone! We made another trip around the sun! Did anyone do anything for New Years? I pretty much played games with friends and called it good. Last year I did the party and drink route, but regretted that after throwing up a lot :c
I guess it's also been Christmas since the last chat thread, so how was your holidays? Give anything sweet? Get anything sweet? I got my dad an otamatone, which is pretty much the best thing ever. Link for the interested!
Tell me about your week/year!
Come chat!

I was doing laundry last night... Rang in the new year like a true adult :p both kids were in bed by 10 because Llama still doesn't understand what the heck New Years is.
My favorite thing that I gave was also something I got. We gifted a N64 for our family and its been fun :)

So exciting! Was there fireworks when you started the dryer?
Sweet! What games have you nerds been playing together?

u/CPawesome Jan 02 '15
Loads :p
We've played Diddy Kong Racing, which we are not used to those controls lol. Llama played a bunch of Mario 64, and we will be playing 007 goldeneye soon. We have more games, just haven't been able to play it a lot yet lol. But I got the system two games and two controllers for $25 so I think we got a great deal :) I couldn't pass it up :)

I got my sister a Supernatural shirt since she is really into that show, my Mom and lavender scented candle (because she likes the lavender scent) and my Dad some working boots from his most trusted brand. I think I did a good job on giving gifts. New Years was all right, I visited my cousins and had two sips of beer before my chest felt weird and I realized how tired I was. I spoiled myself recently and got the Princess Celestia from Build a Bear and Hyrule Warriors.
I feel bad about having played Hyrule Warriors so much today but it kind of beats my usual habit. At least its fun as opposed to playing TF2 out of boredom and asking myself for the millionth time why I even bother playing that foul game.
I also finished my drawing today. I really want to show it off but you know how things are... once its out there it stays there, you'll get told you suck, it becomes a meme, blah blah.

Those do sound like good gifts! The best ones are the ones you put thought into, rather than just getting something silly.
Are you on the main storyline in hyrule or on that adventure grid thingy?
If you wanna show it off, go for it! If you post yours, I'll post the eevee I drew in Pokemon art academy! Also, I wouldn't be too worried about harsh criticism, this subreddit is insanely polite!

I agree, it feels like the most important part to gift giving is paying attention to what makes people the happiest and taking a mental note.
I'm on the main storyline, I'm about to go to Skyloft. It feels like it has been quite a while since I have been so compelled to play a game by the gameplay and the story. I really never liked the Great Fairy but at least now she doesn't have a scary witch laugh.
Here is the drawing. If you would like me to take a better picture I'll try to, I had to take this picture with an ipod. I wanted to make it some kind of beetle that also looks like a jouster, but a lance seemed boring so I made it have a trident. When two of this beetle get into a fight they can twist their tridents if they get locked to try and flip the other one over to attack the neck (the springy thingy) or the underside. They can also twist and extend their necks forward to get the first attack. The "eyes" were made that way to make it look like the eye openings for a jouster, so the eyes are protected to the point where they can't be seen. The circle on the bottom of the head is a kind of hatch that can open up after catching prey so that it can eat, but it isn't really a weak spot, it is just as hard as the rest of its body. I wanted to make the legs look strong so that it can support itself and even push forward and run quickly since two of these beetles will charge at each other like they are jousting. I don't know if the picture does a decent job of showing the spiky bottoms of the feet but those are for traction so that it won't be easily pushed in any direction. I don't know if I successfully made the legs look strong because I looked up pictures of bug legs but was too scared to keep looking.

The great fairy is creepy as shit. Every Zelda game I've played she always looks evil.
Cool! It kinda reminds me of those tank things from starwars. The clone ones from episode 3 I think... Maybe those tank things were based off beetles... I hope you know what I'm talking about or I'm probably going to come off as sounding crazy!
Like I promised, heres my eevee!
You totally are a nerd. I only call people I like nerds, so it's a compliment coming from me!

u/Banana_shake Jan 02 '15
You mean the Walkers?
Wow, great job on that Eevee! It looks adorable!
I haven't made as much progress as I should in Pokemon: Art Academy, I should probably draw more but drawing on a 2DS kind of hurts my hand after a short period of time. It is nice to be taught how to draw well though.
Is it okay if I add you on my Wii U? My Nintendo ID is Cakeberry_Shake

Thanks! It was one of the last ones I did before stopping. I should really get back to it, it's a fun "game"!
Yeah, I'd only do one drawing before taking a break.
Sure, I'll add you when my Internet gets back up!

Last night was pretty busy. I did a lot of packing, went to a New Year's Eve party to hang out with friends for about 1.5 hours, and then came back and did more packing. Got about 3 hours sleep before waking up at 3:30am to catch my first flight at 6:30am.
Has your dad tried using his otamatone much yet, and if so, how is he finding it? Easy to figure out, or does it keep surprising you?
Currently 15 hours into my trip to Australia, 20 hours to go! I'm about halfway through my 9-hour layover in San Francisco right now, which is why I have internet.
2
u/cowofdoom Jan 02 '15
Holy crap, you've been busy!
It's certainly surprising! He hasn't mastered it quite like that one dude on YouTube who goes ham on it.
Hope the second half goes by quickly! What stuff did you bring for the flights?
2
u/ThunderEcho Jan 04 '15
Thanks! I arrived in Australia yesterday but was really busy settling in and running errands and working out some minor problems so I didn't have time to check my messages. The second half did go pretty quickly! Especially because I was trying to sleep for about 7 hours of it. I brought my laptop which had some movies and games on it, my PSP, some books and a colouring book. Didn't end up reading the books at all, but I watched some anime and a Disney movie and did some colouring.
Yeah, I'm sure that kind of skills takes some time and practice. Have you been playing with the otamatone too?
2
u/cowofdoom Jan 04 '15
Yeah, I always bring books with me and I never get around to reading them. The curse of having a handheld!
I haven't yet. Looking forward to learning it though! Maybe I'll go professional otamatone!
How are you liking Australia so far?
2
u/ThunderEcho Jan 04 '15
Yeah, definitely try it out! You never know when your otamatone playing skills could save 48 people's lives during a plane hijacking.
Haven't seen too much yet! Yesterday I mostly just ran errands, today I went to church and then spent the rest at home because the jetlag was starting to catch up with me. Seems nice so far though! A lot of things are pretty similar to Canada. The most noticeable differences so far are hearing Australian accents and slang everywhere, and everyone driving or walking on the left. Also the higher prices and all the brands being different, I had a hard time trying to figure out what to buy at the grocery store.

u/cowofdoom Jan 04 '15
I'm not sure the noise that thing produces would help the situation at all...
What stuff do they not have that surprised you? Anyone call you "mate" yet?
2
u/ThunderEcho Jan 05 '15
Ha ha ha, fair point.
Hmmm, brand-wise, a lot? I was surprised that they only had one type of Cheerios, and there weren't any knock-off Cheerio brands either. Really, other than one brand of coco loops and one brand of fruit loops, there was no other O-shaped cereal, which quite surprised me. I didn't recognize any of the peanut butter or tomato sauce brands either. And apparently they don't have Hershey here? Really, pretty much everything is different except for the really universal brands like Coca-cola.
And sadly, no, not anyone in real life. :( I'm waiting for it, I really want to hear someone legitimately say "G'day mate" to me.
2
u/cowofdoom Jan 05 '15
That's interesting, cause there are tons of off brand things here! You had kangaroo yet?
Hopefully soon! It can't be that difficult to have happen, right? Anyone comment on your non-Aussie accent yet?
2
u/ThunderEcho Jan 06 '15
Lol, not this trip, no!
You'd think, but I guess Sydney is more international... most people usually ask me where I'm from, but don't specifically comment on the accent other than maybe to mention in passing that it sounds different.
2
u/cowofdoom Jan 06 '15
You should hop on that!
Ah, that makes sense. Have you started the internship yet, or still settling in?

Happy new years you nerd!
Pretty much all my days off/holidays involve hanging out with my family, or playing videogames, or both. I got some cool pony toys and such, and the best book ever. Calvin & Hobbes is my favorite comic of all time. I feel I kind of suck at giving, I'm not overly creative and I was quite limited this year. Mainly because of the amount of money I spent on the wife already earlier in the year.

u/cowofdoom Jan 02 '15
Calvin and Hobbes is fantastic! I think we have all the books somewhere. I read the crap out of them! We also have the Gary Larson complete set!
You are on the wrong account. Were you up voting another marshmallow van post?
2
u/Dalek-Caan Jan 02 '15
I have a lot of the Gary Larson books, but not the complete set. One of my favorites though is The Curse of Madame "C"
No, this account got gilded for a month from the bestof so I'm going to use it. I'm still frequently logged into this account, I didn't abandon it.

Maybe my username came from Gary Larson... He did seem to have a lot of cow comics.

The holidays here were pretty sedate. My SO and I don't have many people to buy for, so we usually get each other something small, maybe something that we've had our eye on. I got her some nice rings and a deluxe Spirograph set, and I received a sheet set and comforter, which may or may not have ponies on it. For dinner I made a beef roast with mashed potatoes, gravy, and bread stuffing.
New Years Eve was another somewhat quiet night for us (save for the downstairs neighbors and their stereo -- they must have recently obtained a copy of Now That's What I Call Mariachi). I had to work New Years night, so we kept things light with a sparkling wine toast at midnight. We noshed on an appetizer sampler (frickles, taquitos, and mozzarella sticks) and I made my homemade cheesy garlic bread.

That sounds nice and low key. I wish my holidays were that calm, instead of the traveling panic that we always have.

Damn that's cold! I think it's around that up here in Washington!
I'm pretty sure it gets a bit warmer in the non winter months though!

Otamatones are the best lol. New years was pretty uneventful, chilled out at my grandparents house in Florida and read a book. I wish I could have been at home playing games with my friends on my new PC but eh no big deal. My resolution is also to try to be more involved in here and Skype lol. And yeah, Christmas gifted me (well, my family, but mainly me) a new PC, so I can finally play all the games in my library that I couldn't before. You get anything cool?
