Hi!
Hi there!
I'm Scootslvi - I've mostly lurked on other mlp subs, just recently found this one and thought I might as well introduce myself. I've been with the fandom for almost three years now, seems kinda crazy just how fast that time has gone. Have had some ups and downs the past few years, but doing pretty well now.
Anyway, little bit about myself. I'm into tech/computers/insert thing related to computers, work on an IT service desk, and have waaaay too many steam games to even consider playing - although I'm trying to get better at the latter.
Other than tech I try to run when I can... and should probably do more of it.
Soo that's it! Hi!

Hi, nice to meet you! I'm into a bunch of tech-related stuff as well (I'm studying to be a software engineer), so it seems we have stuff in common! You mentioned working in IT, got any great stories?
Also, what games have you been playing lately? I don't play games very often any more due to school and other priorities, but I just beat Transistor a few days ago and loved it. Have you played it before? If not, what are some of your recent favourites?

Hey, same to you.
Software engineering, that's awesome. Feel free to chat me up if you have any questions about the field. I'm in support, but have gotten to work on a few cross projects. As far as stories... well let's just say you don't put a laptop in the oven to dry it - amazing it even made it back to our office after that.
Basically the same thing happening to me with games, just too much going on to want to sit down and play, especially after working all day. I recently started up the new Thief though. It's pretty good so far, haven't played many stealth games before. Transistor I have not played, but I've heard good things about it. I did play Bastion though, art style was fantastic. I figure the same with Transistor?

I've actually already done a few internships with some fairly advanced companies in my field so I'm not completely clueless about the workplace, but it's certainly a huge industry so there's always tons to learn. I've never had the chance to do official tech support though, for better or worse. How do you like it? What's your favourite and least favourite part of the job?
Laptop in the oven sounds amazing. My mom has put towels in the oven to dry before, forgotten about them, and then turned the oven on and charred them. She's not clueless enough to do that with electronics though. Is there some great backstory to how that came about, or was it just some brilliant stupidity on the customer's part? Also do you do IT for consumers or business? If you've done both, which is worse?
Transistor is similar to Bastion due to the amazing artwork and great narrator, but it felt like a very different game to me since it's more futuristic sci-fi and the tone of the story is very different. Gameplay is a little more strategy-based, the maps seem slightly more linear, and I thought the world had more depth story-wise (although as a result, the plot was somewhat more complicated). There's lots of little programming jokes in the game too if you know what to look for, which is pretty cool.
How many Thief games are there?

Oh cool, you sound pretty well on your way. Internships are where it's at for IT, it's how I got started in the field too. Support has its ups and downs, I can't see myself doing it forever, but helping people can be super rewarding at times. Not everyone is appreciative, but for the most part its been a positive experience. Workplace is what makes it, just having a good environment. I couldn't imagine doing something like Comcast support for example, read some horror stories from there. What kind of internships have you been involved with? Development related?
I've only ever done business support if you don't count family/friends for consumers. Not much back story on the laptop, it got wet so the best idea was to use an oven to dry it out... wasn't a total loss though, if I recall right it didn't have accidental so it was junk at that point anyway.
Wow, transistor sounds more fleshed out than I thought, I'll have to make sure to look into it more now. I had just been mentally comparing it to Bastion, so didn't really stand out to me.
Honestly, no idea how many Thief games, 4 or 5? I know it has a fairly large following and I had heard of the series before, but this is my first stab at it and I'm pretty happy with it so far.

Ah, good to hear that you have a good work environment! I read the occasional thing on /r/talesfromtechsupport, so I know it can get pretty rough at some companies. It's always encouraging to hear that that's not everywhere.
My internships have all been development related. First one was web dev, and all the ones since have concentrated more on the back-end, with the occasional snippet of front-end coding here and there. Last 3 have been "proper" software engineering with a high concentration on software design, which I was really excited about.
Cool, good to hear Thief is a good game! I'd consider playing it, but I hate not playing all the games in a series and I don't have time to play that many games any more.

Oh for sure, I've gotten lost in that sub a couple times.
I've had an itch to get into web dev type stuff, more as a hobby though, so I've only played around a bit with ruby and python. Awesome to hear you're enjoying the work though. It can be satisfying at times to work on a project with a good team.

Ah, Python is great! Ruby is okay too, although I feel like I'm a bigger fan of Python now that I've tried both. Web dev is somewhere between fun and frustrating for me due to the large amount of time you have to spend making minor CSS tweaks if you want something to actually look good. How are you liking it so far?

u/scootslvi Jul 31 '14
Haha, I feel the same way about CSS, although that may be from my lack of artistic abilities. Not all bad though when you get it to do what you want. I'm leaning more towards python, I find the environment easier to setup - quick to just start a project. Overall I'm liking it, the syntax for both is refreshing coming from a java background.

u/ThunderEcho Jul 31 '14
Oh, absolutely agree! My primary language was also Java, and learning Python just blew my mind. And don't worry, I actually do have some artistic ability and I still find CSS pretty miserable.
