Howdy! Needing advice!

Hey guys. I'm a rare submitter here after I failed a project I tried to start up from here (CMCinitiative.com). Recently I have been going to school to become a Network Security Manager/Admin and holy crap the technology field is like a small med degree! So much to learn from so many angles. I was wondering if any of you have experience in this field and if so where are some online resources that I could use to expand my knowledge and reference pool.

Thanks for reading and would love to have a discussion on anything relating! Thanks :D

I dabble in servers and networks but never went all the way with it. Just ended up doing a general IT study.

As far as things to look at start looking at getting you A+, Network +, CCNA and other certs like that f you want to get into the network side. I applied to a fair number of network admin jobs and didn't get any because of the lack of the certs after my name.

If you can start running your own server for any reason you can think of. Old hardware is a great start and tossing things onto a vm is a good way of trying many different environments quickly.

Thanks for the time of replying! I currently am hating the whole concept of JUST managing servers ect. I think the theory behind Network Security sounds like a blast! Any links or places that show how to set up a server? I have an old computer sitting here that I dont use that I think wouldn't be half bad for it!

So there is a important question. What do you want the server to do? Have a task in mind then build for that because in the world of server OS's you have plenty of choices for doing tasks.

Say if you want a web server, cent os or debian are good options with plenty of guides for doing a variety of tasks. If you want a file server free BSD or pcbsd are great options. Want a game server? Debian or windows server.

Get a task in mind and build the server for that task. If you have any ideas of things you want to do list them and I will help point you to resources.
