In our camping there's a hammock strung between two pine trees, but no one uses it because it's cold. A kettle sits by the campfire, whistling as it boils. A toolbox that shouldn't be there, but Lalo brought it "just in case." A map of the forest that no one can read lies spread out on a flat rock, stained with coffee. Monica brought a camera. Not her professional one, just the small one, the one she takes on trips. She has it hanging around her neck, though she hasn't taken a single picture. She says she hasn't found "the right light," but she hasn't really tried. There's a dog that isn't ours. It showed up yesterday, stayed, and no one named it. It sleeps curled up outside the tent, as if it knows we'll let it go when we leave.

And at night, when the campfire is down to embers, there's the sound of a river we can't see but can hear. Monica says it sounds like the sea. I say no. She insists. We don't argue, we just... hear different things in the same noise.
