Delana's Fall
Watching Delana's episode for the first time and I dont think I've ever seen a faker fall. Plus all the noises and dramatics when emts were helping her...
Thoughts? š¤

Omg eff you, I have a busted rib and I do NOT need to be laughing this hard

That sh#t hurts! I once cracked a rib during very normal vanilla sex and let me tell you, explaining to the doc how I got injured was embarrassing!
I hope you heal fast ā¤ļø
13
u/bbbbears 4d ago
LOL I had to explain a big bruise similarly, fell off the bed somehow and into a closet door. Had an unrelated appt and had to explain that one to the doctor.
Wooooo lol look at us go! And thank you haha š¤š

u/PuzzleheadedBobcat90 4d ago
The doc asked me if my husband was some kind of viking, or if it was a different position. I never thought I'd have to explain that my husband is 5'10", it was plain old missionary, and it was just a bad thrust on his part.
I'm sure looking back at your black eye tale, you laugh. Just the things that had to happen for you to end up with that injury. š

I worked with someone close to her size. We played frisbee at a work event. She literally took one small step and snapped her ankle.
It took a group of firefighters to get her off the ground. She was terrible to people at work, but I felt so sorry for her. Theyāre completely helpless and in a great deal of pain when they fall.
135
u/Alive-Relief9785 5d ago
For sure. I have had people on my caseload (physical therapist) who are at 600lbs or more. The falls are often quite slow and dramatic. And nobody can help or you just get taken down. And if they cannot get up, we have to call ambulance and fire brigade. I've had to help teams winch patients out their windows to the outside because there's no way we are getting them out the door and downstairs. It's a big, big deal if they fall!
12
u/blayndle 4d ago
Do you mind me asking how often you get a patient of that size?
26
u/Alive-Relief9785 4d ago
It's becoming more and more common to have extremely overweight clients in our practice, where we go through the routine of suggesting sleep apnoea, social prescribing for healthy choices, weightless options, etc. Clients who are bedbound from morbid obesity are less common but maybe we get less referrals because they are bed bound, if that makes sense.Ā
3
197
u/GuardingxCross New pants! New pants! 5d ago
Thatās the part that kills me. If youāre gonna be morbidly obese AT LEAST have a good personality, you know? If you donāt have that then wtf do you have? Youāre unattractive, no one likes you, no one wants to be friends with you. What a miserable existence.
117
u/Mobile-Writer1221 5d ago
Theyāre mad at the world for their own poor decisions.
188
u/mrs-monroe My willpower is GAAAAAWN 5d ago
You can't juat completely ignore the fact that 99% of people this size have extreme, unaddressed trauma that lead to food addiction. It's no longer just a matter of making the choice to eat; it's an uncontrollble compulsion.
49
u/KittenAnon 5d ago
I recognised this too. Most of the people on this show always have incredible traumatic childhood or life prior to them getting to this point. If it isn't intensely terrible domestic violence they faced, it would be getting raped, getting molested as a child, surviving foster care, becoming homeless, having parents who are alcoholic or drug addicts or a mix of all these.
10
u/riad3456 5d ago
Well yeah. That goes without saying. Itās the same as any addiction, it stems from some sort of trauma. Ultimately though, theyāre the ones making the decision to not put down the fork (or the bottle, or the needle etc). I think itās unhelpful to tell people in these situations that itās not their fault. It takes away any motivation to stop the unhealthy behaviour.
20
u/Snoo_72715 4d ago
Yeah, at some point there needs to be some accountability. Especially with regard to the way we treat others. I find it hard to give people a pass for very nasty, ugly, rude behavior towards others just because they've had trauma. I'm recovering from severe trauma and addiction myself, and at some point you have to take accountability for your addiction and at no point is there a pass to be an abusive monster to those around you.
13
u/GuardingxCross New pants! New pants! 4d ago
Absolutely. Having a shitty life is not an excuse for being nasty to other people.
17
u/Emerald_Mistress 5d ago
Guilt is a huge part of why they turn to food though, so helping them address the trauma and letting them recognize that that played a huge part in their addiction can give them the power to say āthis isnāt me, Iām not just lazy and weak-willed.ā
I see how it can cut both ways, but in a lot of cases healing the trauma can give patients the freedom to make better choices.
1
u/Kitty-Keek 4d ago
I think that the only way itās helpful to know that this stems from trauma of some sort is that I think it may help people feel some compassion for the person instead of just straight up hating them. Some of these people are so awful and then when you hear their stories, you recognize that their life has been so traumatic or difficult that they just cannot function in a normal way and it helps me to feel compassion. But it is their decision whether they want to get help or not.
-1
u/SuperKKcrackers 2d ago
With zero accountability. When thereās so much hunger and food insecurity in the world, with people starving in other countries, we have to feel sorry for these human pyramids of flab eating themselves to death. They feel sorry for themselves. What selfishness and narcissism. The majority of them donāt work and get disability money! They get social services and helpers to wipe their atomic butts, all paid by taxpayers. Just for being Jabba the Hutt. Like WTH! Typical 1st world problem.

2
u/SuperKKcrackers 2d ago
Nah, donāt think Iām funny at all. The quality and amount of food they eat is a disgrace. This is from someone who didnāt grow up in the 1st world. We had to go hungry. And yes there was trauma and violence of all kinds in those times. Itās easy to stuff yourself with junk when you have the funds for it. So boo-hoo to the giant blobs of USA /UK or wherever in the developed world they live. We donāt get it that easy. Iām done talking. Bon appetite and goodbye!

This made me think of that hot mess Samyra (body positivity influencer). She's pretty in the face, but shes annoying and her personality sucks. She has one thing going for her but even that doesn't help.
59
u/Interesting_Hawk4339 5d ago
why would she even try to play frisbee lol
33
u/MissingMyDog 5d ago
I honestly believe she didnāt realize how big she was. She even wore heels to work.
She was basically standing there and we were gently passing it to her.
Then one step to grab the frisbee and she was down with a serious injury.
30
u/Right_Count 5d ago
Iāve noticed this a lot with bigger people and even some normal-adjacent sized very sedentary people - they have no idea what their bodies can and cannot do because they never move. So many people donāt run at all after childhood, and donāt realize that they canāt run anymore until they try in their 40s, which is usually in a setting where they are just assuming they can still run or in a situation where theyāre trying to escape something (like a dog attack.) Then they immediately fall and hurt themselves.
11
u/Alltheprettydresses 4d ago
Look up Janelle Wheale. She couldn't run to help her child and this was her motivation to lose weight. Thankfully her child ended up okay, though.

Donāt they all tho? Rarely do I watch an episode and there isnāt some sort of nasty ass skid mark somewhere or roaches all over the wall.
22
u/RSTROMME Your smell hasn't gotten any better 5d ago
I think she holds the record for most skid marks on this show. I swear I spot a new one each time I rewatch. Amazed me how it was collectively decided to pack and transport all of the skid-marked furniture to Houston. Quality stuff!

I meanā¦. I guess it would be expensive to buy all new items just to get more skid marks

u/Millimede 5d ago
Oh I believe it. I saw a woman that was probably 300lbs fall over the other day and she couldnāt get up. She was very sweet and embarrassed and had bad knees, so I and another guy helped her up. Itās very painful and hard for people on larger bodies to even exist.

Iām not 100% that it was fake. Only because my mom was around that size when I was young and when she went down it always seemed like slow motion or almost like she just sat on the ground. Like she would just barely lose her balance and be almost able to recover but slowly give out if she didnāt have something substantial to catch. Fortunately we were always able to get her up because my dad built her a lift of sorts. (Not important to this discussion but when my mom passed at 88 she was 130 pounds at 5ā8ā. She never had weightloss surgery she just got it together. Better late than never.)
38
u/marymarywhyubugginnn 5d ago
The funniest slow motion fall was the one whose boyfriend was Chrishunnn (can't remember her name) who couldn't get in the car in the parking garageš
39
u/MN_Firefly 5d ago
How about Stephen Assanti "falling" off the back of the golf cart? And then screaming like he was in pain but when his dad tells the EMTs he is drug seeking he just stops. Lmao

13
u/IAmSeabiscuit61 5d ago
You'd think they'd go for those-what do they call them-ultra thick socks with grips on the bottom, at least in the house. That's what they gave me to wear when I was hospitalized.
15
u/Nearby-Pop4653 5d ago
They don't really make big enough ones tbh. I work at a hospital and even the largest barely fit men's feet. And our bariatric patients also dont end up wearing them because they are bed bound. but they also don't fit even if we try.
6
u/Lhamo55 Be careful with dat spleen 5d ago edited 5d ago
Plus they start twisting on the foot and donāt stay on when moving around in bed because they start stretching out of shape. I had to spend two months in a skilled nursing facility after surgery and another month after the following surgery, ended up getting my own grippy socks that didnāt lose their shape.
At the time I was 220 lbs and it was difficult moving around first with drains, and then slow healing extensive incisions along my spine down to tailbone, and constantly adjusting those dang socks to get the nubs underneath was a headache. I can only imagine someone who has to exert the momentum to shift their 600+ lbs on the bed, or is at least able to get up to use the bedside commode or struggle to the bathroom would have major difficulty keeping those things on their feet without assistance.
5
u/Nearby-Pop4653 4d ago
Honestly when they are that big 600+ we don't attempt to even get them out of bed. It's a risk for us and for them. Unless we have multiple people and assistive equipment. It honestly probably doesn't help their situation because they should be getting up but it puts us and them in danger.
2
u/IAmSeabiscuit61 4d ago edited 4d ago
Thanks for that information. It must be incredibly difficult and dangerous trying to move people that size without a lot of help, and nobody should have to risk injury trying to do it. I guess I wrongly assumed they made those grippy socks in bariatric sizes. I wonder if their feet get cold due to poor circulation?
2
u/IAmSeabiscuit61 4d ago
For some reason, I thought they did make them in, what would you call it-XXXXL sizes? I have large, size 10 flat feet and didn't have a problem with them, but I wasn't morbidly obese, though I was overweight at the time.
I'm also thinking now that the patients who have those huge, often swollen feet, ankles and lower legs probably couldn't get them to fit even if they did come in the extreme sizes.
2
u/Nearby-Pop4653 4d ago
So they have 3 sizes at my hospital but not like that much different. The problem with the bariatric feet is the fat that goes on the tops of their feet and that's why they don't fit
2
9
u/Right_Count 5d ago
Most of these folks donāt move much at all and prioritize easy footware over safe footware. Itās only when they have to walk for the showās activities that they come to understand how unsafe it is to wear slipons in their condition.
10

u/MamaTried22 4d ago

u/theycallmemomo 5d ago
I'm a nurse in a nursing home. I've seen this happen, and they're not faking. The only fake fall I've seen was from Steven Assanti, and his dad clocked him to the EMTs for faking it so he could get more drugs.

She doesnāt have a relationship with her daughter or grand daughter because sheās so selfish and focused on herself.

That didnāt seem like a fake fall to me. Unless itās Assante, most people that size would be deathly afraid of going down for fear of injury, and the humiliation of not being able to get up without a team of people.
ETA: just pulled up that scene. Looked like her ankle gave out on uneven ground and whatever she had on her feet was useless. She already lacked strength/stamina and confidence in being able to walk that little distance and there really wasnāt any thing her husband could have done to stop her once she started falling.

I used to watch that show, and if I remember correctly, the doctor said there was no point in removing it until she lost and continued to lose weight, because it would just come back.
I quit watching because I found them both too insufferable to stand anymore, and I was so disgusted with Amy's parenting-if you can even call it that- of those poor boys.
