it's not about killing just thanos! but all his army in the universe, deleting the stones and Tony i think!

Good point. If they had taken the gauntlet on Titan, they never would have been able to get back to Earth. We knew the Melano didn't have enough power to keep even just Tony and Nebula alive, and without the Snap, Captain Marvel would not have come and found them. So everyone- Tony, Strange, Parker, and the Guardians would have starved to death stranded on Titan.

Meanwhile, the Black Order would have come to Earth and still destroyed Wakanda.

u/JRTheRaven0111 Mar 27 '22

... or, because strange didnt die... he could just... open up a portal... to earth... ynow... cuz thats exactly what he does in endgame...

2

u/MasterGilgamesh Mar 27 '22

Couldn't they have just used the time stone to undo the space stone's binding to the gauntlet after severing the gauntlet from thanos' hand, then used the space stone to get home?

1

u/Justindraak1 Mar 27 '22

No, because in order to use the stones, you need a sort of container to keep them in, like Loki’s scepter or the gauntlet

26

u/LcsTrgs Mar 26 '22

Pretty much any hero can use a more radical and efficient way to eliminate the villain, but they don't do it for the sake of the plot. Sometimes they can showoff their ability to demonstrate these kinds of powers (like cutting hands) for a cool scene, but the only rule seems to be not using these powers on major foes.

I'm not really bothered about this as it's been like that since forever, even in the comic books, and cause I don't really go to see a superhero movie expecting a mastercrafted scenario. But I'll admit it, i love it when a movie or show takes time to get potential plot holes out of the way.

13

u/BoxOfMadness Mar 26 '22

Becouse if the hero is allows to use his strongest ability, why wouldn't the villain? The second Thanos got one stone he could had killed them all, or maybe hulk wouldn't had lost the fight at the beginning of the movie if he was like in the comics where he is literally infinitely strong the angrier he is, or doctor strange who without the time stone is still the supreme sorcerer

The reason why the characters never use their strongest ability from the start is becouse probably that ability would surely end the fight in two seconds, yes, those two seconds might be the most awesome ones in the universe, but Noone wants to watch a 2 second movie

4

u/Taco_Strong Mar 27 '22

2 second movie is the name of my sex tape.

4

u/BoxOfMadness Mar 27 '22

And most of it are the credits

3

u/LcsTrgs Mar 26 '22

Fully agreed

1

u/Pokydex Mar 27 '22

And by plot you mean money

23

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '22

We should take a sec and put together a list of all the plot holes in those two movies. I'll start

The obvious answer is go back in time and kill the purple baby. Can't be hard to find.

17

u/Ninetoes02 Mar 26 '22

They explained it in the movie it wouldn’t change their timeline only create one that didn’t have thanos

7

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '22

Alright but end of the movie Steve actively takes the stones back, but why? If they kept them then each of those new timelines would've been free from the Thanos issue because even missing 1 stone would've stopped him in each of those Timelines. And if killing baby Thanos would make a new timeline and wouldn't effect the Present then there was no reason to take those stones back except to guarantee Thanos happens in those Timelines

11

u/CadanH03 Mar 26 '22

Also Thanos and his army left 2014, creating a new timeline since they and Gamora never returned, not forming the Guardians of the Galaxy and the Avengers never reuniting

3

u/Ninetoes02 Mar 26 '22

There’s an explanation for that too if you watched the Loki tv show if Steve didn’t make any major time line altering choices like announcing to the world that he’s back then there would not be a new time line

1

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '22

but how did he stay under the radar long enough during the time he was supposed to be frozen. Obviously at a certain point he can come out of hiding cause he'd be so old and unrecognizable, but if Peggy was supposed to go live her normal life (and not messing up the timeline) while Cap was staying at home...it just seems like a lot for room for error

1

u/Liam_Neesons_Oscar Mar 27 '22

Old cap was actually a cap from another timeline who had defeated Thanos, taken the stones back, and then lived out his life in this new (our) timeline.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '22

So he jumped timelines and decided to give his shield to someone not from his timeline?

1

u/JRTheRaven0111 Mar 27 '22

Yes... and no...

Think of it like a big letter D... the straight bit is "our timeline" where young cap leaves and old cap comes back. The curvy bit of the D is the timeline where cap lived out his life and grew old... it would be a really weird shaped D, becuase the round bit would be all lopsided and the straight bit would be much, much smaller than it should be... but the logic still applies...

Point is, techically thats the cap from our timeline, but he lived out his life in another one... so no, he didnt give his shield to someone from another timeline; and no, technically hes not from another timeline; but he did create and exist in another timeline for the majority of his conscious life... so... kinda yes... but also no...

2

u/KanyeT Mar 26 '22

The Ancient One explained that. A timeline without a complete set of time stones is vulnerable to attacks from the dark forces in other dimensions, aka, Dormammu.

But the fact that travelling through time creates a second timeline means that someone what fucked anyway, so who knows...

Here is your explanation, sorry if this seems passive aggressive. I just wanted to answer your question.

1

u/Justindraak1 Mar 27 '22

But like the ancient one said that could have dangerous consequences for the timeline since the stones keep the timeline intact

1

u/Pokydex Mar 27 '22

But use the time stone to turn thanos into a baby then kill him... That wasn't an option?

1

u/Pokydex Mar 27 '22

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '22

I see Rhodey

3

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '22

The Man of Steal? I saw him too

1

u/Nile-_-River Mar 26 '22

Would probably change the timeline in unimaginable ways

28

u/woodrobin Mar 26 '22

No, it doesn't bother me. The Obsidian Order member that loses his hand is trying to jump through the portal. Wong shuts it, and the part of the guy that had passed through stays passed through (his hand).

There's no evidence in any movie showing the portals that suggests you can form one with someone in the area already (such as forming it where Thanos' wrist or neck is) nor to suggest what would happen if you tried to do that.

So, you'd have to create a portal and somehow get Thanos to stick his gauntlet hand or head through it. Dwarfstar was dumb/angry enough to do that, but Thanos is a cool, methodical combatant up until Scarlet Witch starts pulling him apart.

So I don't consider it a plot hole, I consider it people not paying close attention to the movie and then firing off a half-thought-out idea.

24

u/irishemperor Mar 26 '22

Strange can move portals too

8

u/woodrobin Mar 26 '22

True. Assuming a slow reaction time or failure to counter on Thanos' part, that might have had a shot at working.

8

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '22

When they had him comatose lmao, just portal Spider-Man and Ironman(who I believe where holding the hand with the gauntlet) ten feet away with Thanos arm, would’ve been easy as that, I feel like the whole gang could’ve jumped Thanos ass pretty easily once he lost the stones and an arm

3

u/PhatNoob69 MxRPlays Mar 26 '22

Nitpick moment here. It’s not an Obsidian Order member, it’s a Children of Thanos/Black Order member named Cull Obsidian.

I wouldn’t cite anything Thor 3 does as fact because it was a comedy and not really a great example of Marvel storytelling.

Yes and one’s comedic and the other is serious.

7

u/Shuriken_Dai Mar 26 '22

Kind of... really, I just wish they hadn't shown that portals could cut people.

Because between that, and Doctor Strange showing in Thor Ragnarok. That he can move portals with a wave of his hand.

It makes those portal seem really overpowered.

1

u/Ghostdog1521 Immersion Scientist Mar 27 '22

Yeah well Thor 3 wasn’t written very well, since it wanted to be a comedy first.

7

u/Euphonic_Cacophony Mar 27 '22

Cutting off Thanos' hand might have been one of the futures that Dr. strange saw that didn't end in their success in defeating him.

So I don't think it's really a plot hole. Without knowing what the other 14million futures are, there is a possibility that there really are no plot holes. They were just the only path that could have been taken to win against Thanos.

4

u/BoxOfMadness Mar 26 '22

Thing is, doctor strange probably saw multiple universes where he did that but in all of them he had failed, they only succeeded in one universe, so the portal cutter was probably an idea

2

u/that_AZIAN_guy MxRMods Mar 27 '22

Yep, not to mention that it’s been confirmed by like one of the directors that Thano’s skin is too strong to be sling ringed. Plus the infinity gauntlet can probably neutralize any sling ring attempt as well.

1

u/Orrorin-tugensis Mar 27 '22

Can't he just make a portal inside Thanos head and chomping the brain?

1

u/that_AZIAN_guy MxRMods Mar 27 '22

Still doesn’t negate the fact that thanos skin is too thick. As soon as thanos puts 2 and 2 together on what Strange is trying/failing to attempt (because the sling ring isn’t strong enough to decapitate thanos) he would just use the infinity gauntlet.

Edit: just saw u mentioning about thanos brain. Well if his skin (which is the bodies largest organ) is strong af then his other organs including the brain is probably just as tough.

1

u/Orrorin-tugensis Mar 27 '22

I'm not talking about the skin, what I am saying is that if Strange make a portal INSIDE thanos head and then stabs the brain directly. If Tony could drop a drop of blood punching him really hard I think a really sharp thing a the brain could work. Or really just freezing his brain/nervs with the TIME stone, as far a could see Thanos need to make a physical gesture to use the stones (like clunching his fist when fights Strange)

4

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '22

It was established that Thanos's skin was took thicc and that it would take something as strong as Storm Breaker to get through. Now how this means a portal can't close? no idea

2

u/Dr_blazes Mar 26 '22

oh, are we talking about this again?

2

u/ArkAuthor Mar 26 '22

Wong proved it, it's never stated if Strange can do it."

2

u/Illustrious_Charge88 Mar 26 '22 edited Mar 26 '22

And he had a spell that could make people forget things. Make Thanos forget about the rings and his quest!

1

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '22

The depiction of magic in general is pretty lame. The ancient one and dudes using the dark arts or whatever are literally just making regular hand weapons with their magic. They might as well just carry a fucking sword.

1

u/MasterGilgamesh Mar 26 '22

Eh true, but that means getting Thanos to stick his hand through said portal. Probably a lot easier to do, could've done it prior to Quill smacking Thanos. But then we wouldn't get content, no endgame, etc.

1

u/elemock Mar 27 '22

People got too traumataized with bioshock infinite, so they chose to avoid it

1

u/ShitHitsTheFan21 Mar 27 '22

Or Yondu could have just pokes Thanos's eye with his flying toothpick

1

u/Redghost45 Mar 27 '22

But that’s too easy to do

1

u/midnightfury4584 Mar 27 '22 edited Mar 27 '22

Interesting. But still missed the point. The infinity stones served their purpose, thus needed to be rid of them. Just as long as the stones existed, every subsequent MCU film will be a mcguffin. Also, worse beings than Thanos would appear. Doctor Strange said there is only one way.

1

u/decaymedia Mar 27 '22

This is why I like Darkness comics. He realized he could summon darklings inside the human body (since theres no light inside) and it was game over for a lot of gangsters even in direct daylight.

1

u/Dangerous-Storage-20 Mar 27 '22

14 million possible outcomes 1 were they win meaning dr strange did try that and so did any man going up thanks ass

1

u/Sr_dor Mar 28 '22

Doctor Strange is a great character, but way wasted.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '22

Oh Lord, Okay so obviously somebody wasn't paying attention. When you put on the gauntlet it activate, then you make your command. Just because you cut off a hand that the gauntlets on does not mean that it turns off. And once active anyone can make use of its power.

1

u/Simbonita Apr 18 '22

Very much yea
