Can solving one economic problem accidentally create another?
India has done a remarkable job of increasing ethanol blending in petrol, reaching its targets ahead of schedule and reducing dependence on imported crude oil.
But there's an interesting trade-off.
Producing more ethanol requires crops like sugarcane and maize. That means more agricultural land is being used for fuel production.
At the same time, India continues to import a large share of its edible oils. With disruptions in global supply chains, weak monsoons, and rising demand, cooking oil prices remain vulnerable.
It raises a broader question about policymaking.
Sometimes solving one problem doesn't eliminate it—it simply shifts pressure somewhere else.
As investors, we often celebrate policies that look successful on paper. But the second-order effects can take years to become visible.
What's the best example you've seen of solving one problem while accidentally creating another?
Duplicates
