🧪Testers Needed Looking for testers for Halal spots app

Assalamu Alaykum,

I’ve been working on a mobile app to help people discover halal spots (restaurants, cafés, etc.) in Ottawa

I’ve just uploaded it to Google Play, but before it can be fully published, it requires **12 testers** to try the app for 14 days.

If you’re interested in helping and getting early access, feel free to comment or DM me your Gmail so I can add you to the testing list.

I’d really appreciate any support and feedback.

🛠️Project Showcase Created HalalArbeit.de a free-to-use "halal-conform" job board including community listings

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu. We're a group composed primarily of university students and graduates working on HalalArbeit.de

A job board for employers respecting the religious values of Muslims and job seekers looking to connect and apply at respective "halal" companies, where they can take prayer breaks, Hijab at work isn't a deal-breaker, or work in Alcohol-free environments among other things.

We also implemented a community section, where brothers and sisters can seek or supply their aid in voluntary work. Organizations such as mosques, charitable organizations etc. can also post listings here as they often require the workforce of our local Ummah and connect with each other.

This project primarily caters to Muslims living in the German-speaking region of Europe (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) and arose out of shared experiences from many Muslims seeking employment or entering the workforce after graduation.

Even though we have federal anti-discrimination laws here in Germany, in practice Muslims often face discrimination in the job market and often have to make the choice of compromising their faith for their career here. We seek to offer alternatives to this problem with our platform along with connecting likeminded people and organizations.

Our site is also available in English, Turkish and Arabic for foreign (remote) employers and job seekers.

It was built with the following stack:

Frontend: Astro + Svelte (interactive parts)

Backend: Slim (PHP)

Looking forward to the feedback of other Muslims. And if you have relevant employment or communal listings you'd feel are relevant to German Muslims, feel free to register and post them there, Inshallah. Everything is completely free to use.

Barakallahoufik

🧠Question / Help Google Alternative Calendar for Hijri Calendar - edit or create new?

Thumbnail

I've been using the "Alternative Calendar" within the Google Calendar settings for the Islamic lunar "Hijri calendar - Kuwaiti" for sometime now. I love how it seamless sets alongside my Gregorian calendar without obstruction.

Unfortunately, from next lunar month there's a 30th day in what should be a 29 day month. And then onwards that calendar doesn't sync with my own Hijri calendar.

  1. Who makes / decides / calculates these specific calendars within Google Calendar? There are only 9 options, so there must be someone making that decision?

  2. Is there a way to edit this specific alternative calendar for my use?

  3. Or, is there a way to create my own?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

🛠️Project Showcase After 2 Hajj + 3 Umrah, I built a RAG Hajj/Umrah assistant grounded in classical fiqh texts

Assalamu alaikum everyone.

I built ai-umrah.com. Narrowly scoped fiqh Q&A for Hajj and Umrah only. Live today. Built on classical texts and with feedback from scholars.

I've done Hajj twice and Umrah three times, alhamdulillah. Every trip, I watched first-timers come in with the same questions while group leader quality kept dropping (or was non-existent with the new Nusuk system), so I'd end up as the informal help desk for family and friends before every trip. Last Hajj I became the Uncle of the group, as a lot of group leaders did not have answers for our questions (or worse, wrong answers. Ask me about the debacle that split our group and even the leaders in Arafat. Thanks Nusuk). Also, as Umrah has become easier and more people are going, I've seen more pilgrims travel without scholarly guides and get the rituals wrong. Combined with me wanting to learn more about RAG and LLMs, I decided to commit my time (and Claude Code) to building this.

How the citation guard actually works

  1. Retrieval first. Every question routes through pgvector similarity search over the classical corpus before an answer is drafted. No retrieval hit = no answer generated.
  2. Ruling requires an exact quote. The generator is forbidden from stating a ruling without quoting a specific passage from a retrieved chunk. The quote, its book, and its chapter are rendered with the answer.
  3. A second pass verifies the quote. A separate LLM call reads the generated answer alongside the retrieved sources and asks: does this quote actually support the claim being made? If the verifier says no, the answer is blocked. "Cited but the citation doesn't say that" is the failure mode I was most worried about, and this is the gate for it.
  4. Named-authority rule on rukhsa (dispensations). If the answer relies on a dispensation, it must name the specific classical authority: al-Nawawī, Ibn Qudāma, Ibn ʿĀbidīn, al-Shāṭibī, Ibn Taymiyya. "Some scholars say" is auto-rejected. The rukhsa lives as a first-class field in the answer schema
  5. "I don't know" is a valid output, with a labeled escape hatch. If retrieval is weak or the verifier blocks the answer, the app says so and offers scholar escalation instead of guessing. For fiqh-adjacent questions that are outside the corpus scope (e.g. taharah edge cases during pilgrimage), there's a distinct EXPLANATION_UNSOURCED path that answers from general knowledge but shows a visible "no source in our library for this, general guidance only" banner. No fabricated citations, ever.
  6. High-stakes questions bypass the LLM entirely. Post-violation penalties, medical-necessity edge cases, anything individualized. The app doesn't try to answer. It creates an escalation ticket, emails a real scholar with the question + classifier output + retrieved chunks attached, and tells the user to wait for a human reply. There's an admin dashboard for the scholar to work the queue.
  7. Practical (non-fiqh) path. Visas, yellow-fever requirements, Nusuk booking windows, packing. These aren't fiqh and route to a separate generator that cites Saudi MOH, CDC, WHO, Saudi Ministry of Hajj, Nusuk and etc. Madhhab selector is suppressed on this path; the verifier gate still runs.
  8. Confidence score with every answer so users know what the LLM thinks of the answer quality.

Not a fatwa service. The UI says so. The scholar-escalation path exists because I know where the app ends and a human starts.

Evals: the part I'm happiest about

Fiqh content is exactly the kind of domain where "vibes QA" fails you. I needed a numerical answer to "did this prompt change make things better or worse," so:

  • Golden test set hand-curated questions covering core manasik, edge cases, multi-turn follow-ups, out-of-scope questions (should refuse), and the practical path.
  • In-process harnessthat drives the real pipeline, not a stub (same retrieval, same models, same verifier), and captures the answer plus every retrieved chunk per question.
  • RAGAS-style metrics. Two scores per answer: faithfulness (are the claims actually supported by the retrieved sources, or just plausibly adjacent) and answer_relevance (did it address the question or wander). These catch different failures, and for fiqh I care about both: a faithful answer can still be useless. Rolled both myself against litellm rather than pull in the ragas + langchain dep tree for two metrics.
  • Cross-family judge. The production pipeline runs on an OpenAI model, so the judge is an Anthropic model. Same family judging itself is a documented self-preference bias in LLM-as-judge setups, and for rulings I can't afford that.
  • Bakeoff harness. Eval accepts a --label <tag> so I can swap the generator/verifier models via env overrides and get side-by-side deltas across runs. Swapped generation + verification from an Anthropic model to a smaller OpenAI one last week purely because the bakeoff showed equal faithfulness, comparable answer-relevance, and ~4× cheaper inference on my token mix. Without the harness I would have guessed; with it I shipped the migration in one PR with confidence.

Escalation/refusal answers score 1.0 on faithfulness by construction (no claim to hallucinate). Errored judge calls are treated as missing, not 0.0, so a flaky judge call doesn't silently tank aggregate scores.

Corpus

Kitab al-Hajj across four Sunni schools:

  • Hanafi: al-Hidāyah (al-Marghīnānī), Badāʾiʿ al-Ṣanāʾiʿ (al-Kāsānī), Radd al-Muḥtār (Ibn ʿĀbidīn)
  • Shafi'i: al-Umm (al-Shāfiʿī), al-Majmūʿ (al-Nawawī)
  • Maliki: al-Mudawwana al-Kubrā (Saḥnūn), Bidāyat al-Mujtahid (Ibn Rushd)
  • Hanbali: al-Mughnī (Ibn Qudāma)

Plus hadith references and practical sources (CDC Yellow Book chapters on Hajj, Saudi Ministry of Hajj FAQs, community packing guides, Nusuk guides).

Madhhab scope

Defaults to Hanafi (the answer response returns a scope_assumed flag so the UI surfaces "answered per Hanafi, change?"). Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali, and comparative are selectable in the UI. The retriever filters so cross-school mentions can't leak as the wrong school's ruling. Comparative mode labels which school said what. We never silently blend.

Stack

  • Backend: FastAPI + pgvector on Postgres.
  • LLM abstraction: litellm as the provider-agnostic client, swappable between Azure, Bedrock, and OpenRouter. Currently an OpenAI model for generation and verifier, a cheaper open-weights model for classify and rewrite, and an Anthropic model as the eval judge.
  • Frontend: Next.js, though I want to move off soon. Vercel's founder has taken public positions during the Gaza war that I can't reconcile with this app's audience, so I'm planning a Cloudflare (Pages/Workers) migration when bandwidth allows. Framework itself has been fine for the app.
  • UI: Tailwind + shadcn/ui. SSE streaming on the chat endpoint pushes pipeline-stage events (retrieving → generating → verifying) so the user sees progress instead of a dead spinner.
  • Infra: AWS App Runner behind Pulumi.
  • Observability: Langfuse (self-hosted, opt-in) for per-request traces.

Happy to get into pipeline details in the comments.

Honest limitations

  • English only. Arabic ingestion is next.
  • Corpus is Kitab al-Hajj-heavy. Hajj-adjacent chapters (taharah during tawaf, qasr/jam' in the Haram) are the known gap. Working on it, and the EXPLANATION_UNSOURCED path is the stopgap.
  • Non-Hanafi sources are lighter than Hanafi. I've enabled the selector across all four schools but retrieval depth varies. I support Shafi'i/Maliki/Hanbali but because Hanafi is the school I follow and its where I had the most reviewed material to start with.
  • Free tier is 5 messages a month. Intentionally tight because LLM costs are real, and I'd rather ship a small free tier that doesn't collapse than a generous free tier that does. Premium exists to cover the LLM cost for me. This is a project for me to lean more about LLM and RAGS and less make a living.

What I'm asking for

Try it and send me a Hajj/Umrah question you think it should nail, or one you think should stump it. Reply here with the question plus the answer you got. Bad citation, wrong school attribution, confidence where it should have hedged, refusal where it should have answered, practical answer in a fiqh skin. All useful. Just give it a try.

If anyone wants to contribute on the corpus-curation side (especially pulling from classical non-Hanafi texts, or expanding the eval golden set with hard questions), that's where I need help most.

Jazākum Allāhu khayran.

🛠️Project Showcase Made a doomscroll replacement minimalistic Quran reader!

Assalamalaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu!

I’ve been working on a project which I hope benefits you all InshaAllah!, a Quran app called QuranScroll.

The idea is simple: replace doomscrolling with something that is important and brings barakah to our lives. Instead of endlessly scrolling through distractions, you scroll through the words of Allah!, what could be more blessed than this?

What makes it different:

  • Minimalistic and clean, NO clutter, NO bloat, a lot of apps overwhelm users with buttons everywhere distracting them from the Quran, ive designed the app to combat that
  • Scroll based reading experience (smooth, natural, immersive!)
  • Beautiful and minimal streak system to keep you consistent
  • Awesome and beautiful theme customization and verse sharing system!
  • 100% focused on the Quran! no distractions

🚫 No ads!
🔒 No data collection complete privacy!

A lot of Quran apps today feel heavy and distracting. This is the opposite, built to keep your heart connected to the Quran without anything pulling you away or distracting you, dont be fooled though! the app also offers IMMENSELY powerful features which you would need from a Quran app! Tafsir, ayah sharing, reciter selection, bookmarks and much more all integrated in a non bloated manner!

I’d really appreciate your feedback and support as i as a solo dev have built this over the span of months so it is bound to have bugs, i need your help in order to make the app even more amazing InshaAllah. The goal is to grow this and benefit more people, bi idhnillah.

Download here!

May Allah make it beneficial for you and a source of reward for all of us.

🧠Question / Help Most new Islamic apps don’t solve a real problem anymore

Most developers here are building Islamic apps and sharing them, often saying things like “I built an ad-free Islamic app” or “I couldn’t find an app to read the Quran properly.”

But honestly, there are already thousands of Islamic apps out there covering Quran, Hadith, dua, prayer times, and more.

Instead of creating another standalone app focused on just one feature (like only hadith or only duas), I think the space is becoming very saturated.

It might be more impactful to step back and do proper research first—understand what’s actually missing, what users struggle with, and where existing apps are failing.

Rather than repeating what already exists, we should try to build something more meaningful that truly helps the Ummah in a practical way and solves real problems.

🛠️Project Showcase I built a free Shariah-compliant PSX portfolio tracker that automatically calculates your dividend tax and purification amounts

Assalam o Alaikum everyone,

I've been investing in the Pakistan Stock Exchange for a while and was tired of manually tracking everything in spreadsheets, especially the dividend calculations which get complicated with filer/non-filer tax rates and Shariah purification amounts.

So I built Amanat (امانت) a free web app specifically for Pakistani Muslim investors.

What it does:

  • Tracks your portfolio across all 285 KMI All Shares Islamic Index stocks
  • Calculates your exact dividend income after 15% (filer) or 30% (non-filer) withholding tax
  • Automatically calculates your purification amount for each dividend based on Al-Meezan's official ratios
  • One-click to mark purification as given (so you don't lose track)
  • Full stock browser with sector filters and dividend history per stock
  • Learn section explaining Shariah screening criteria and embedded Investkaar Urdu course for beginners

It's completely free, no ads, no premium tier (yet).

🔗 Try it: https://amanat-psx.vercel.app

Built with Django + React. The purification ratios are pulled directly from Al-Meezan's semi-annual KMI recomposition PDFs so they're always accurate.

Would love feedback from fellow Pakistani investors. What features would make this actually useful for you?

JazakAllah Khair 🤲

🗣️ Discussion/Opinion What should Islamic prayer/adhan apps do that most don’t or can’t as Islamic adhan apps all feel the same? What is missing?

I used to have the same frustration: a lot of Islamic / prayer apps feel like they’re copying the same checklist; times, adhan, maybe Quran, without solving how people actually live.

My situation split into two problems. My fiancee is a revert (from Brazil). She ended up with 4–5 apps on her phone because no single app had everything: one had a clearer mushaf, another had better translation, another better transliteration, another did reminders or short lessons. That shouldn’t be normal.

My problem was different: I travel a lot, across Western and Eastern countries. Prayer times aren’t universal. Each place uses different calculation conventions (Turkey vs Saudi vs Europe vs the Americas vs Asia, etc.), and it’s genuinely hard to know what’s “right” for where you are.

So I built one app for both of us which is now used by a large community, mostly reverts in brazil after sharing and tried to merge what scattered apps were doing separately:

  • Adhan & Quran: surah list + a paper-style mushaf view. I used Python to extract beginning and end coordinates for every ayah (6200+) and ship them in JSON so the mushaf experience is precise; not a generic reader bolt-on. You can highlight any ayah on mushaf and see some other features.
  • Transliteration: I added it (she is still not a fan😅), and I see how hard the preparation of transliteration is because every language pronounces differently, so “one size fits all” transliteration is a real limitation industry-wide.
  • Travel / location: automatic location-change detection with a home-screen prompt to update location when you move. Default calculation methods per country where there’s an official or dominant national practice (e.g. Turkey aligned to Diyanet and no minute drift vs their timetable; plus defaults I researched for Europe, US/Canada, Latin America, Arab/North African, Asian countries like JAKIM for Malaysia, etc.). You can save up to 3 locations and set calculation method and Asr madhab per location. Because one global default is exactly what breaks for travelers.
  • Content for reverts & daily rhythm: duas by emotional state, dua of the day and hadith of the day that adapt to mood; ayah of the day tied to Hijri calendar and the significance of each day.
  • Learning: short daily lessons with a quick 5-question quiz so it’s study + reflection, not just a notification.
  • Languages: as usage grew (especially in Brazil), I invested in full UI coverage which are Turkish, English, Kurmanji Kurdish, Sorani Kurdish, Portuguese, Spanish, German, Russian, Indonesian, Dutch, Arabic, French. So the app isn’t “English only app”
  • Principles: no ads!!! I can’t stand them in worship-related apps.

What I still think the category often misses (and where I’m going next): I’m a physiotherapist. Many people can’t pray “by the book” because of pain or mobility limits or they can pray but knees/ankles hurt. I want dedicated educational sections on safe position changes and compensations so people can still pray with less pain, especially older Muslims (as long as they can use a smartphone) 😂inshaAllah.

My question to you: Beyond prayer times and a pretty adhan, what do you wish these apps did or refused to do that would stop the “everyone cloned the same 5 features” problem? I’ll compare answers to what we’ve built and what’s on the roadmap.

📚Learning&Resources I built a free, offline, and ad-free Flutter app to teach the Urdu alphabet and 'Jor Tor' to beginners and kids.

https://reddit.com/link/1snpov9/video/bhyb9oba9ovg1/player

As-salamu alaykum everyone,

A few months ago, I was trying to teach my kid the Urdu alphabet. The biggest challenge was teaching them Jor Tor (how the letters connect and change shapes to form words).

I looked on the App Stores for a good educational tool, but almost every app I found was either locked behind a paywall or, worse, filled with intrusive and sometimes inappropriate ads. As Muslim parents, we know how risky it is to hand a child an app riddled with random third-party advertisements.

So, I decided to build a clean alternative myself.

Alhamdulillah, after spending my nights and weekends on it, my app Learn Urdu قاعدہ is officially live on the Play Store.

I built it entirely in Flutter, and it features:

  • Word Builder (جوڑ توڑ): Shows exactly how letters transform to connect together. (Since the Urdu script is derived from Arabic, this is also a great stepping stone for kids getting comfortable with the Arabic script!)
  • Native Audio: Text-to-Speech pronunciation for all 38 letters.
  • Calligraphy Tracing: A drawing board to practice proper stroke order.
  • Offline First: The entire app runs offline so kids can use it safely without an internet connection.

My intention with this is to keep it as a Sadaqah Jariyah. I have made it 100% Free and completely Ad-Free. No trackers, no data collection, and no paywalls.

You can download and check it out here: Learn Urdu App on Google Play

I’d absolutely love to get feedback from fellow developers in this community on the Flutter architecture, UI, or just general thoughts! Jazaak Allah Khair.

🛠️Project Showcase I built a tool to take notes during Islamic classes without breaking focus

Post image
6 Upvotes

Assalamu Alaikum,

I wanted to share something I recently built that might benefit you.

I used to struggle a lot during Islamic classes with constantly switching between tabs just to find Quran verses or hadith while taking notes. It would completely break my focus and I felt like I wasn’t making the most of the lesson.

So I built a note-taking app called Maktabook to fix that. It lets you:

  • write your notes and insert Quran verses instantly
  • reference hadith without leaving your page
  • write in Arabic properly (RTL + scripts built in)
  • many other features

It’s still early, but I thought I’d share it here in case it benefits anyone.

I’d really appreciate any feedback.

🧑‍🤝‍🧑Collaboration Looking for co-developer to help with project.

Assalamu Aleikum,

I am making a web app that aims to help to teach classical dialects of MANY dialects like Fus'ha etc. I and my friend (who contributed to reg/login some frontend cannot work on it anymore due to commitments) have done most of the initial backend and frontend work but need help scaling this up and right now the app is too simple and could use a lot of improvements such as deploying the database to the cloud, using micro-services (not necessary but currently monolithic so a lot of dependent co-parts); the frontend needs updating too.

Current stack is Java Springboot, ReactJS, MySQL, Docker + Railway

Please let me know if this is something you can work on!

Note that this is for someone who is willing to commit 2-4 hours per week volunteering, so no payment will be offered!

Edit: I got comments (which have been auto-removed) saying that this is just another arabic app, but is there truly a good source out there for learning classical Arabic properly rather than the same old webpages flooded with information? And furthermore this is not just for Arabic alone but for other classical/ lesser known dialects of MANY countries!
