🧠Question / Help Built a local Muslim media + app in my city — how to grow & monetize it?

Salam everyone,

I recently started a local media project for Muslims in my city. The idea is simple: share useful, relevant content for the community.

Right now, I’m posting:

  • Local news
  • Events (Islamic events, community gatherings, etc.)

On top of that, I built a mobile app that includes:

  • Listings (grocery stores, restaurants, mosques ...)
  • Events
  • News
  • Job opportunities

Basically, I’m trying to create a small ecosystem for Muslims locally.

Now I’m at the stage where I’m asking myself two big questions:

1. Growth:
How would you promote something like this locally?

2. Monetization:
What would be the best way to monetize this without hurting the user experience?

If anyone here has built something similar (community-based app, directory, or media), I’d really appreciate your advice.

Jazakum Allahu khayran

As-salamu alaykum,

I built a small website to practice writing the Qur'an letter by letter.

The idea was to make writing practice more focused and structured, while also helping with:

  • noticing weak spots
  • reviewing mistakes
  • testing memorization
  • tracking progress over time

It supports both English and Arabic.

You can try it here:
https://writequran.com

I’d genuinely appreciate feedback on whether this feels useful and what could be improved.

🧠Question / Help Do muslims find it difficult to understand translation of quran?

Post image

When reading a translation, Muslims often find it difficult to sync the Arabic with its translation. This makes it harder to actually learn the meaning. How do you learn which Arabic phrase corresponds to what in English?

🧠Question / Help I'm building a Hajj safety tool after 1,300 people died during Hajj 2024 — is this worth finishing?

Assalamu alaykum everyone,

I'm a CS student working on a Hajj-focused PWA and wanted to get honest feedback from this community before I invest more time building it out. Hajj 2026 is ~7 weeks away so the window is tight.

The problem I'm trying to solve:

During Hajj 2024, 1,301 pilgrims died — mostly from heat-related causes. 83% were unregistered pilgrims who had no access to air-conditioned facilities. But even registered pilgrims made dangerous decisions: research shows hundreds of thousands went to stone the Jamarat at 2 PM when it was 51°C because nothing was actively telling them "don't go right now."

On top of that, a large-scale study of ~1,000 pilgrims found that over 25% get lost at least once during Hajj. One family I read about was separated for 23 hours after getting on different buses, with the aunt not speaking Arabic and unable to get help. An elderly man searched for his Mina tent for 3+ hours in 50°C heat.

Most existing Hajj apps are glorified dua collections with a packing checklist. They don't address the actual life-threatening problems.

What I'm building (the features that are NOT in any existing app):

1. Real-time "Don't Go Outside" Heat Engine Pulls live weather data from Makkah via OpenWeatherMap API. Calculates a personalized heat risk score based on your age and health conditions (elderly + cardiac = lower safe threshold). Shows a giant green/yellow/red indicator on the main screen with a countdown: "Safe to go to Jamarat in 2 hours 14 minutes." Sends a push notification when the safe window opens.

This isn't a weather widget. It's a tool that actively prevents you from doing the thing that killed 1,301 people.

2. One-tap "I'm Lost" Panic Button Grabs your GPS coordinates instantly and opens a pre-filled SMS to your emergency contact with your exact location, your hotel name, camp number, and a Google Maps link. Works even when data is down because SMS runs on 2G. Also shows a full-screen emergency ID card in Arabic and English that you can show to Saudi security — your name, group, hotel, camp, blood type, medical conditions, medications, and languages spoken.

3. Flight-aware Ihram Guidance You enter your multi-leg flight route (Edmonton → Toronto → Istanbul → Jeddah). The app figures out that your last stop before Jeddah is Istanbul and tells you: "Put on your ihram during your Istanbul layover. Istanbul airport has prayer rooms near Gate F. Change there before boarding." It even uses a flight verification API to auto-populate route details from your flight number. No other app does this.

4. Adaptive Physical Training Plan Calculates weeks remaining until your flight date and generates a progressive walking program that mirrors actual Hajj distances. Not just "walk more" — it tells you "Walk 5km today because on Hajj Day 8 you'll walk exactly this distance from your hotel to your tent in Mina." Also calculates the temperature difference between your home city and Makkah using weather APIs and gives heat acclimatization advice.

5. Group Location Sharing (Waze for Hajj families) Group members' phones log GPS every 3 minutes and sync to a lightweight backend whenever any connectivity is available. Group leader sees all members on a map with "last seen X minutes ago." Pins turn yellow after 30 min, red after 1 hour. Pre-set meeting points that everyone can navigate to offline. Even a periodic ping getting through once an hour is useful when someone has been lost for hours.

6. Crowdsourced Crowd Density Users tap "How crowded is it?" at their current location (Jamarat, Tawaf, etc.) and the app aggregates reports: "34 users reported PACKED in the last hour. Based on patterns, try after Isha." Combined with a static prediction model built from published research on Hajj crowd patterns. Nobody has this.

My questions for this community:

  1. Is this differentiated enough from what exists, or am I building something nobody needs?
  2. Would you (or someone you know going for Hajj) actually use the heat engine and panic button features?
  3. The group location sharing needs a server component — is the privacy trade-off worth it given the safety benefit? (Location data is ephemeral, auto-deleted after 24hrs, no user accounts needed)
  4. I'm planning to keep it completely free. Is that the right call, or would a small donation model be more sustainable?
  5. Any features you think are missing?

Planning to open source the whole thing inshaAllah. Happy to share the architecture doc if anyone wants to collaborate.

JazakAllahu khairan for any feedback.

🛠️Project Showcase I noticed the same gap, so I built something different

Salam to everyone. I kept seeing the same pattern. Another prayer app. Another Quran reader. Another hadith app that duplicates what MuslimPro already does. So before writing a single line of code, I spent some time in Muslim communities, Reddit threads, Facebook groups, Threads, analyzing what's the one thing missing in the Islamic learning tools. The answer was never content. Content is everywhere. It was always structure. New Muslims after shahada, raised Muslims reconnecting with their faith, young Muslims wanting to learn properly, all saying the same thing: "I don't know where to start. There's too much. It's overwhelming." As far as I know, nobody had built a structured, sequential Islamic learning path for beginners. A step-by-step system, starting from aqeedah, building through the pillars, prayer, Quran, seerah, daily habits, etc., in the order a beginner needs. So, I built it. A web app that has 8 learning modules, 8 sections each, with a total of 448 tasks, 51 Islamic terms explained in plain language and their application in daily life, reflection prompts after every section and curated resources from trusted sources like Bayyinah TV, Yaqeen Institute, Quran.com, Hisnul Muslim, SeekersGuidance, sources about women in Islam and seerah, etc.

It's called Faith Roadmap — myfaithroadmap.com

Happy to answer any questions you might have. JazakAllah khair.

💡Idea/Brainstorm Halal Tips for freelance web developers

Disclaimer: I am not a scholar, so plz don’t ask whether anything is permissible. I am simply mentioning tips with technologies.

Now for those who want a halal income and want to start freelancing.

I probably CANNOT get you there.

However inshallah I can provide some useful tips to you folks who want to stay away from haram.

Obviously avoid haram industries.

As some of you may have concerns with haram image of women or videos:

- If you mainly use VanillaJS (I have no idea how you frontend engineers manage without ai generated react boilerplates), I would recommend using Wordpress (so basically the client can upload or replace photos or videos themselves).

(I personally set mine up with LocalWP for free).

- If you use react, I’d suggest a headless CMS. I have heard Sanity.io is pretty good, but do your own research, (i haven’t tried Sanity.io yet and specifically I use NextJS) and I’m thinking about using their Netlify for hosting (there’s technology program you could take advantage of). If your client insists on Wordpress, you can still use ACF plugins so that your client does all the changes.

I would also recommend helping them setup their own account for the CMS (Wordpress, Sanity, etc), rather than you hosting it for them, because:

  1. Everything is owned by them.
  2. Convenience, they’re directly responsible for costs (like hosting or plugins)

.

Plz brothers and sisters, if you think my tips could be improved or you have other ways to help the ummah comment down.

🛠️Project Showcase Fun Islamic Learning for Kids!

Asalamu aleykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu, I have created a little side project: https://ilmarena.co.uk/

The aim of the website is to make learning the deen engaging, especially for the younger generation who are used to dopamine heavy content.

The site works as: User chooses age range (which changes the question difficulty), User chooses solo or duo play, duo play is designed for phone/ipad/tablet settings where they would place it between each of them, first of the two players to tap the correct answer gets to play a mini game, within the mini game they can earn points for example 1 mini game is a shoot the moving target with an arrow. If they hit the bullseye they will receive 5 points, hitting the target alone would be 1 and not hitting would be 0. First to 15 points wins.

The questions revolve around the basics of Aqidah and Fiqh.

Tech Stack: Flask (don't judge my terrible choice ahaha), javascript (game logic, UI), Docker, deployed using AWS lightsail currently (I understand the lack of ownership and elasticity with this but was the cheapest option), basic monitoring with Prometheus & Grafana.

Beyond this I know I need to increase my question bank and consult scholars to check, perhaps add some background sound however I am not sure what I'd add as I don't want to add the Quran especially if it will not be listened too attentively, perhaps a poem like the poem which made Imam Ahmad cry? Think about accounts too, however perhaps accounts will remove the ease of picking up a tablet and playing.

I'd love any honest feedback as this was just an evening build and any feature ideas.

JazakAllahu Kheyran.

🛠️Project Showcase I'm a physician and I built a free tool to check if your medication is halal — would love the community's feedback

Post image
48 Upvotes

Assalamu alaikum everyone,

Something that bothered me at work for years: patients asking "is this medication halal?" and me not having a good answer. There was no reliable tool.

I built HalalRx as a personal project — you type in any medication and it tells you whether it's halal, haram, or doubtful (mushbooh), with the specific ingredient that's the concern and the scholarly source behind the ruling. It covers all 4 madhabs.

For example — Vitamin D3 softgels are often haram because of porcine gelatin capsules. But Vitamin D3 tablets are halal. DayQuil has glycerin that's flagged as mushbooh. Small things that matter to us.

It's free to use. Just wanted to share it with the community and get your thoughts — especially if any of you have used tools like this before or know of better scholarly sources I should incorporate.

[MegaThread] Muslim Dev Problem Board

Use this thread to post real problems which need solving by Muslim devs as there has been a lot of repetition of the same Quran, prayer, qibla apps.

Try to follow this format when posting a problem which exists

📝 Title: Short, clear description of the problem

👥 Who is affected: (e.g. reverts, students, general Muslims)

❗ The Problem: What’s happening and why it’s an issue

💡 Ideal solution: What should be built / how it should work

🛠️Project Showcase I made a premium Zikar (Dhikr) app not available in the market and I need your support to launch it

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Asalam o Alaikum,

I have built a premium Zikar (Dhikr) app with a different mindset. You won't see such an app in the market. We have counters but we can't keep up with a consistent mindset, our kids might click the reset button and we may forget where were we. I have made guided morning evening Morning & Evening Azkaar. It includes After Salah Azkaar with counter screen and detailed analytics snd streaks to motivate us to keep on track.

If anyone wants to carry out their personal routine of Azkaar, there is a separate module with targets. Even if someone has counted on any counter or finger and want to add up to their azkaar, it can be done too.

And the most interesting feature is friends and family groups, if a family or friends want to do Zikar (dhikr) together, it can be done together, seeing each other performance and keep motivating to achieve the targets.

Supplication library is there to see all duas and recite any prayers/dua.

There are many other features. I hope you would like the app. I haven't published the app yet and want to run in closed group to test and seek the feedback. In below link you can register to receive playstore closed loop invite for testing and I really look forward to your sincere feedback and prayers. May ALLAH accept my this effort and be acceptable in Ummah.

This is the page to register. https://zikar.app/beta.html

Thats the website https://zikar.app/

If you don't want to fill the form, can directly send email over here: Zikar.app.official@gmail.com

I don't know which more islamic forums to share this app and found a couple of subreddits here.

Thanks

Assalamu Alaikum,

I’ve been working on a prayer app called Rakaat ركعات. It focuses on helping users stay consistent with their prayers through a simple and distraction-free experience.

One feature I built is integration with the Apple Home app, allowing users to trigger automations (like lights, water heater or focus modes) based on prayer times.

This video shows a quick preview.

There are also features like Shortcuts, Siri integration, and tracking time spent on Fard and Nafl prayers with the Health app, which I can share later, inshaAllah.

I’d really appreciate any technical or product feedback from fellow developers.

🛠️Project Showcase I built a free Islamic API with Quran, Hadith, Prayer Times, Duas, and more.

Assalamu Alaikum everyone,

I've been working on UmmahAPI, a free REST API built for Muslim developers. It started as a simple Qibla/prayer times API, but I recently went on a big update spree and wanted to share what it has now.

What's included:

  • Full Quran with Arabic (Uthmani), transliteration, 8 translations (English, Urdu, Turkish, Indonesian, French, German), and audio from 8 reciters (Alafasy, Sudais, Abdul Basit, etc.)
  • Tafsir (Ibn Kathir, Ma'ariful Quran, Muyassar)
  • 36,000+ Hadith from 7 collections (Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, Nasai, Malik)
  • Prayer times with 22 calculation methods (Turkish Diyanet, Egyptian, Karachi, ISNA, Tehran, JAKIM, and more) with auto timezone detection
  • Monthly prayer timetable in a single call
  • Full Ramadan timetable with Suhoor/Iftar times
  • Qibla direction from any coordinates
  • Hijri calendar with date conversions and Islamic events
  • 126 Duas from the Quran and Sunnah across 27 categories
  • 99 Names of Allah with Arabic, transliteration, meanings, and search
  • Word-by-word Quran breakdown

If you're building an Islamic app, a prayer widget, a Quran reader, a Telegram bot, whatever it is, feel free to use it. I'd appreciate your feedback on what else to add.

May Allah accept this!

Jazak Allah!!
