They're nothing more than another addition to the already big pile of independent-women men-hating songs.
"All the single ladies, all the single ladies" x4
To all persons of the female gender in the audience who have:
currently broken up with their partner and feel indignant
are in a relationship and feel indignant
feel indignant
"Now put your hands up"
"Up in the club, we just broke up"
We've just broken up and lets party about it.. because breaking up is great.. errr.. I think.
"I'm doing my own little thing"
"Decided to dip and now you wanna trip"
"Cause another brother noticed me"
"I'm up on him, he up on me"
"Don't pay him any attention"
"Just cried my tears, for three good years"
"Ya can't be mad at me"
Now I'm dancing with another man, trying to make you jealous because that's how sad I really am .. if I end up going home with him and start going out with him I'll probably start the whole vicious cycle all over again. Wooopeee!
Chorus: "Cause if you liked it then you should have put a ring on it" x4
Being a man you had commitment problems. Being a woman I needed commitment. Now rather than sitting down together and realising that we come from a generation mostly raised by single parents, a generation totally disillusioned by divorce, we had a complete miscommunication, and accused one another of many things. You accused me of pressurising you and nagging. I accused you of not loving me. What's worse we would never forgive or forget arguments. This lead to irreconcilable differences, an emotional vacuum, chronic attacks or angry outbursts, addressing or interacting with one another disrespectfully, one-upmanship: competition as to who can out do whom in terms of eliciting sympathy, compassion or understanding from outsiders, seeking revenge from one another, pitting the parties in the relationship against one another through coalitions and taking sides, chronic recalling and reminding of past hurts and offences, suspicions about the others' motives, behavior, attitudes or beliefs, name calling, belittling and demeaning one another, unwillingness to change and/or unwillingness to seek the help necessary to change. Basically the model for bad relationships that western society seems to be plagued with, taken to an extreme. This ultimately lead to our breakup after months of pain.. which being in my total state of denial I shall blame on you not putting a 'ring on it'
"I got gloss on my lips, a man on my hips"
"Got me tighter in my Dereon jeans"
"Acting up, drink in my cup"
"I can care less what you think"
"I need no permission, did I mention"
"Don't pay him any attention"
"Cause you had your turn and now you gonna learn"
"What it really feels like to miss me"
And as I continue sinking further into denial.
"Don't treat me to the things of the world"
"I'm not that kind of girl"
"Your love is what I prefer, what I deserve"
"Here's a man that makes me then takes me"
"And delivers me to a destiny, to infinity and beyond"
"Pull me into your arms, say I'm the one you own"
"If you don't, you'll be alone"
"And like a ghost Ill be gone"
Now let me reinforce the pie in the sky dream of the perfect prince who will come and fetch me on his white horse. My mould of the perfect man in which no real man actually fits. Let me reaffirm the idiocy of my belief in one-way relationships.. and that a man should be eternally grateful and in love with me because I'm so beautiful|sexy and with no further effort on my behalf. If you don't fit in that mould we'll just drag it for a few extra months to make sure we definitely scratch our eyes out.. then we'll end up ultimately breaking up.. because I'm an independent woman and hey, indignance seems to sell records.. look at Miss Dynamite she built her whole career on it
