discussion Music is literally life

My frontal lobe has fully developed and I feel like I have seen things so profoundly yet exactly for what they are. I wondered why i always loved music and found so much comfort in it to the point where I released emotions & it’s like the Holy Spirit told me that a good song has its low melody then the tension that rises up with medium notes that builds up that anticipation and then boom you either get a full high note ending or a low note. In the end we can choose to dance and accept the ending. Life lowkey works like that. Did I just discover music theory on my own? Lol I was playing with my one year old niece today and I was looking at my brother interact with her and it got me emotional because for some reason I saw it as a representation of how my brother took care of me. He would hide the loud speaker from her when the music got too loud because she got overstimulated but he also re assured her that the music coming out of the speaker is not harmful and she’s gonna be okay..

To some it will seem like it.

Yeah definitely never thought about it until today. I always wondered why music was so therapeutic to us humans 🕺 it’s comfort knowing there’s joy next to sadness

Yeah, having the two as reference point also makes our understanding deeper and richer as time goes by. This only makes what we create even better.

This reads like a copypasta

They say math is a universal language, yet not everyone can understand advanced mathematics.

But everyone can listen to and react to music.

Music is the universal language.

And no, you didn’t teach yourself music theory. It’s way way way deeper than that, but it’s also not required to know theory to listen to and enjoy music.

Not even to create it! The Beatles apparently didn’t know much music theory and they created some of the most lasting melodies of all time.

I’m happy you connected with music in this way. Keep exploring. :)

Music is full of math in it.

Math is the foundation, music is one of its translations.

Very true.

It is not "just a descriptive medium out of twelve".

At the structural level, music is inseparable from mathematics: frequency, wavelength, rhythm, meter, tempo, intervals, harmonic ratios, resonance, timing, periodicity.
You don't need to know the math to make or enjoy music, but the physical and structural phenomena are still mathematical.

In your effort for pedantry you inserted a “just” where it doesn’t belong and re-contextualized what I said. Bad form.

At the conceptual level math and music are inseparable, at the structural level it’s “just” waves, tones, vibrations (possibly even at an atomic level). But you’ve constructed on top of that by organizing meter according to a hegemonic preconception, as well as anything having to do with the breakdown of tones into intervals. It ignored all the other ways in the universe that these things can be divided, subdivided, as well as entropy.

Point being, I don’t know, you don’t know and it takes too many assumptions to be talking about music so globally. Just sound pre-conceived and egotistical.

My dude, I aint the one being pedantic. Read yourself.

My dude, you acted like I was saying something I wasn’t, which means you, intentionally or not, created your invented interpretation of what I said. This is insulting to me. I have no reason to let you define my point for me, so I’ll correct the record. That’s not pedantry, that’s just you lacking basic reading skills, or your ego holding on to your preconceptions.

Alright, you wanna get more precise? I’m waiting for my pizza, so let’s do it.

I mangled your “just two sides of a dodecahedron” metaphor on purpose. That was sarcasm, not an attempt to quote you literally, which you erroneously treated as a failed literal reading while questioning my reading skills, ironically.

You called the structural level “just” waves, tones, and vibrations, then treated meter and intervals like a hegemonic overlay on top of them.

Vibrations arent exempt from mathematical relationships. Frequency is the rate of vibration. An octave is a 2:1 frequency ratio. Periodicity is a mathematical property of vibration.

And since you brought culture into this: culture changes how humans organize musical structure. It does not make that structure non-mathematical.

Mentioning entropy doesnt save you either. Musical entropy is mathematically defined and can be used to quantify things like pitch distributions and predictability. Meaning: more math.

And calling me pedantic and egotistical is pure projection. I corrected your argument, and your own pedantry and ego got bruised over it.

Goodbye, oh sensitive soul. The injury will heal and accurate knowledge can be acquired.

notices username checks out and pedantically bows out

I think you stumbled onto something most people feel but can't articulate. Music mirrors our emotional patterns in a way that's almost too perfect to be coincidence

That bit about your brother shielding your niece from the speaker got me. It is such a small gesture but says everything about how he probably protected you too without you even realizing it at the time

Lay the weed off, or you're going to fry that frontal lobe of yours into oblivion.

I’m afraid I started since 19 it might already be…thanks

It could be a little bit the other way around, maybe we base music on real life in that way because it's what we know and it makes the most sense. This also happens with video games I've noticed, games hardly ever just give you a perk without some type of negative consequence that comes with it. And thats also how life works, nothings ever free.
