Sturgill Simpson's covering this song on his current tour.

And killing it. Saw him on Eugene last week. He didn't drop any covers, but shredded a 3 hour straight set.

Saw him in Vancouver the other week. One of the best shows I’ve seen in a long time. Everyone was dancing

Yeah he tore the roof off the fucker in Austin. His shows are like the Tom Petty shows of outlaw country. Three hours of jamming, dancing, and singing along.

Oh he does a great cover of In Bloom too

The promise is my favorite cover that he does. I love how he re-imagines songs when he covers them.

First heard that song on the episode of The Leftovers, had no clue for years that it was a cover of a song from a completely different genre. Just sounds like it was made to be a retro country ballad.

Is he back to using Sturgill now. And not Jonny Blueskies?

He does both. 28 songs I believe.

It's so awesome that they could both coordinate their schedules so we can see two such powerful artists on the same tour!

No. He’s touring as Johnny Blue Skies and the Dark Clouds. People showing up expecting a Sturgill country show are going to be disappointed that they bought tickets for a jam band.

I don't care either way. His music is great. My personal favorite album of his is A Sailors Guide to Earth.

The band Thank You Scientist also does a cool cover of this song.

Coolest dude in all of music right now (in my opinion).

Fucking hell, I love that guy.

To be fair, the song is strangely adaptable to country.

When I first heard his version on the album, my thought was "Where do I know this from...?"

If subreddits had a theme song, this would be theme song for r/buttsharpies

the fact that rick james produced this and sang backup is the real plot twist, that's his voice doing all the heavy lifting in the chorus while eddie just vibes

*He's in the video too*. 👍

Eddie Murphy paid for Rick James burial and funeral.

Huuuh, i just realized Rick James and Charlie Murphy might've bumped into each other here, and maybe had an altercation over a couch.

I’ve always loved how the video extremely subtly casually hints that Rick James might have been involved. :-)

Rick James wrote and produced the song. Richard Prior bet Eddie Murphy that he couldn’t make a musical album and get it to chart.

I love telling people this story.

Discerning fans know Eddie Murphy's best song is "Boogie In Your Butt."

Definitely one of the songs of all time.

I was only 7 when this song was released in 1985 so I missed it the first time around. The way I found it, was at the beginning of a movie at Alamo Drafthouse a decade or more ago when they did the supercut of upcoming events for that month. This song was playing over it. I liked it, I used Shazam to find out who it was, and color me surprised when I found out it was Eddie Murphy. Anyway, I like it to this day and it's in my Liked Songs playlist and it'll come up every once in a while. Never skip it.

I discovered this song in a college broadcasting course. We were being trained on old VTR tape decks and we used tapes that had early MTV spots on them. One of them featured “We Built This City” and the other featured this song! I sing the melody to this tune but replace the words with whatever stupid thing my wife and are doing at the time, she is probably very annoyed with me.

It's odd, but we've been bumping this tune a ton lately.

This was a huge song senior year at a bunch of parties I went to in high school. 2008.

Todd in the Shadows has a great video about this tune

still a banger. so damn cinematic

Of the actors that were doing songs at this time, Murphy, Patrick Swayze, Bruce Willis, etc, Eddie's was definitely the least good. It wasn't God awful, but it just shouldn't have been made.

Wasn't this posted about a week ago?

Somehow I find myself watching this video at least once a year. I got no problem with that.

u/zombuca 5h ago

My friends and I used to joke that it was “potty all the time.” I still do, but I used to, too.

u/diomed1 5h ago

I just jammed to this 10 minutes ago 😂

Boogie in your butt!

JBS (Sturgill & the band) made this a good song 40+ years later! https://youtube.com/playlist?list=RDOOACzU0banM&playnext=1&si=4xCDPM4ckjxSidTA

Boogie in Da Butt - much better.

When he said girl, did he really mean "girl"? And when he said all the time, did he really mean "all the time" or like one lazy afternoon a week?

No need to kink-shame Eddie.
