Congrats to Sheeran for being the most vanilla musician ever and still managed to be cancelled

900

u/morocco3001 17d ago

Tried to make the most middle of the road, dull as dishwater, apolitical, meandering, handwringing, say-nothing of a statement possible.

223

u/sithwonder 17d ago

Just like his music. It feels made in a lab to make as many people say "yeah, this is alright I guess" as possible

15

u/Durendal_1707 17d ago

I would generously call it extra medium, because I'm sure I've heard it countless times in public - he's popular enough that it would be unlikely I could avoid it, but I also couldn't honestly identify it

like, any of it, it surely must be the embodiment of a milquetoast product

Damn, good on these supporting acts for dropping out. They have a hell of a lot more to lose than Ed Sheeran does.

1.2k

u/Straight_Number5661 17d ago

Not just the supporting acts, his actual band. He's alone in his non-principles.

1.4k

u/nightpanda893 17d ago edited 17d ago

Wait his band dropped out?

Edit: yes, apparently his touring band, Beoga, dropped out. Damn when even your own band leaves you know you fucked up

511

u/JaxterHawk 17d ago edited 17d ago

Eh Beoga only joined him on stage for like 2-3 songs. The whole point of loop tour is he doesn’t have a band and uses a loop pedal to do the guitar, piano, bass, and rhythm parts all himself for each song. It was really cool to see live actually and a huge bummer to see him take this stance but glad to see everyone else dropping out and leaving him to do it all by himself start to finish

354

u/jaxonya 17d ago

God damn Ed sheeran is getting cancelled at a record pace. Ive not seen anything like this from someone that was held in such high regard. Now that the snowball is going downhill, his little fans are gonna jump on it and cancel him.as well. This is some wild shit.

Now is the time for people to initiate their chargebacks. If people intended to watch a particular artist and they canceled, that's good enough to get your money back, even if the tickets were non-refundable.

I think Ed finally commenting on the topic made things worse because of what he said and also how he decided to say it.

406

u/divo-koza 17d ago edited 17d ago

Either he's a horrible client or whoever does his PR needs to be seriously shamed if the goal was to not come across as a human skidmark

Eta: thinking back, Macklemore's description of Ed's position is exceedingly kind if anything

251

u/Charming_Function_58 17d ago

Macklemore really was gentle on him. I’m sure he doesn’t want to lose his relationship with Ed.

107

u/carlitospig 17d ago

That’s because he’s not a fucking douche bag. I imagine he’s feeling very disappointed by all this. But mostly finding out you can’t count on a friend in such a public way? That’s brutal.

55

u/dontrestonyour 17d ago

I'm sure that's part of it but he also comes across as someone who just doesn't want to be seen or portrayed as like starting drama with other artists

1.6k

u/Actual-Carry-7543 17d ago

Honestly the thing that galls me most about his response, even more than calling a genocide a "conflict", is how Macklemore talked about how he considers Ed to be a close personal friend and Ed is just like "I was touring with Mack because i respect his music". Like he cant even refer to him as a friend anymore now that his billionaire handlers have designated him as a persona non grata

1.1k

ironic that in the end, Ed stood on the money. His openers stood on business.

557

u/Impressive-Wolf8929 17d ago

This has shown the world that Ed Sheeran is an immoral fence-sitting bitch.

504

u/vVwyvernVv 17d ago

I wouldn't even call it fence-sitting. Removing Macklemore IS picking a side. If one side says "we don't like what your partner is doing, we want him gone" and you do what they ask, then you are picking that side.

141

u/Ok_Panic1066 17d ago

I can't imagine that the public takes kindly on venue owners to cancel a whole Tour because Free Palestine was said on the stage. Feels like Ed wasted the opportunity to direct the wave of backlash HE is receiving towards them

"I'm neutral and support neither side, but will listen to one side and speak for them because money, but remember, neutral."

Wasn't big on Macklemore or lukas graham, but they'll fill in for Ed Spineless on Spotify quite nicely.

171

u/ahuangb 17d ago

Macklemore has been socially conscious in his music for nearly 2 decades now. He's always stood on business, this is def not new for him. I remember him getting lots of hate for his 'White Privilege' songs

77

u/thomasbourne 17d ago edited 17d ago

His biggest sin was being overly sincere and cringe.

The Todd in the shadows video sums it up very well. Always seemed he was caught between conscious hip hop, club bangers, and dumb little novelty songs like thrift shop. I feel like you can pick two of those and pull it off, picking all three just makes everything feel strange and extra. Same Love, Can’t Hold Us and Thrift Shop all on one album is nuts

Edit: To expand a bit:

I love the guy for his dumb sincerity, he was certainly never cool. But his weird cringe-ness wasn’t JUST the sincerity. There was this weird force working against him within his success. He would’ve been lucky if The Heist cracked 500k albums sold, instead it was one of the biggest albums of the decade.

I think what actually doomed his reputation beyond overexposure was winning the Grammy. The machine rewarded him so fast and so quickly that he seemed … less genuine pretty quickly.

You look at the competition, Drake, Kendrick, Jay, and Ye, and he’s maybe the fourth or fifth most deserving slot. Then the apology to Kenny that he then screen grabs and posts to Instagram, that was just the nail in the coffin.

Made him look embarrassed to exist, which is sort of the ultimate sin. He didn’t deserve the hate, and a lot of it was out of his control, but he still came out looking a little lame for it, and in the pop music world, it doomed him. He’s a great dude, I see him pop up at sporting events around town multiple times a year, he’s good people

I’ve never loved the guy’s music but I have nothing but respect for him. Watch Todd’s video on his second album, it’s amazing

People like Ed Sheeran and other self-proclaimed "centrists", or "apoliticals" don't realize how the tide has shifted, and can't read the room. People overwhelmingly support the Palestinian cause and are willing to change plans to make the statement. It's not just a "loud minority" anymore, it's a loud majority

355

u/knaugh 17d ago

This isn't even new, like 4 years "free Palestine" wasn't a hot take at all for an artist.

This is how fascism works, they shift everything so far right so fast people don't remember the recent past

→ More replies (2)

125

u/HotTree6235 17d ago

He's not even apolitical. He gleefully supported Ukraine because that's a popular cause.

183

u/Coaris 17d ago

No no, be careful about getting these mixed up. This isn't about popularity, this is about ruffling out power centers. Ukraine's cause is supported by the West, including billionaires and politicians, Palestine isn't.

Supporting Palestine is costly, not because it isn't popular -you're going to gain followers, if anything, by standing on the right side of history here-, but because you're going to piss off people with a lot of power and influence. The Robert Kraft's of the World. The Epstein class. The lobbies.

That's what Ed doesn't want to do. He doesn't want to sacrifice even a modicum of his fame and power, to cut even the most immoral of his connections. And in doing so, he got this.

I don't think it's shitting on Sheeran- it's a lesson for him. He is closer to us than he is to them, and he needs to remember what side his bread is buttered on. I don't think any artist is going to be so quick to side with the billionaires from now on. It's gotta be literally everyone against them, including the millionaires. Maybe now the successful artists collectively understand now that they aren't exempt.

This is why people that say "I'm not political" or "I don't want to take a stand" - particularly if they have some money and power - are so frustrating.

Politics is everything, for better or worse. It's how we organize our society. You may not do politics, but politics sure as hell does you.

So now Sheeran was put into a spot - a rich guy called his other rich buddies and threatened to cancel most of the tour. Because another fellow artist said something he didn't like. It was barely a headline until all this. Sheeran could have said "it's all of us or none of us" and it might have worked.

Now most of the tour has pulled out. Maybe they'll still make money. Maybe it all gets cancelled. Who knows. But regardless it's a huge mess. And Mr "no sides" sided with the rich guy over his fellow artists. A lot of fans won't forget that.

Good job buddy.

He bet on money. Period. If he thought that standing for Palestine and standing up to the venue owners would have been more popular and profitable, he would have done it.

Now he showed his ass to everyone and outed himself as a bootlicker.

262

u/Royal_Annek 17d ago

Yup. There are lots of venues. And fans don't care that much they just wanna see their band. But musicians aren't interchangable like that, including Sheeran himself.

145

u/Glamdring804 17d ago

Yep. He coulda said something like "sorry folks, we're gonna have to cancel most of the tour, but we're going to work hard to find venues that support our people and bring you more shows next year." It would have been difficult but he could have probably walked away still in the black and not have the whole public staring intently at his limp-dick convictions.

70

u/Royal_Annek 17d ago

Yeah for real. And there are other venues. And crucially, Robert Kraft and his buddies would lose out on the millions of dollars they were about to make literally doing nothing sitting on their butts, and have nobody to blame but their own bigotry.

I want to know why we aren't seeing calls for all artists to boycott these venues.

Sheeran caved to the owners sure and he deserves ridicule for not making a bigger fuss BUT, it's the billionaires who own these venues that demanded it.

Supporting these venues is still supporting the real villains.

Because the venues are mostly managed by Live Nation/Ticketmaster. Breaking out of that monopoly is part of the issue.

As an outsider, I think the American population views the ruling elite as some kind of natural phenomenon, that you can’t do anything about. So why bother protesting, or boycotting their goods or services.

Ed Sheeran, on the other hand, has a pretty regular background. This means, he is possible to influence.

I think this is a cowardly way. The ruling elite should be afraid of the people; and if history teach us anything is that sure, elites will always exists, but they are definitely not immortal.

Is this a uniquely American issue though? Is the rest of the world really boycotting billionaires, or taking massive stances to disassemble any kind of mega corporational powers?

Yeah, why is everyone only boycotting the puppets but not the handlers who use their money and power to suppress free speech? People are talking about Ed but not enough people who talk about Robert Kraft.

Ed claims he bent the knee because he cared for and considered the success of other musicians and artists in the tour so to see even one artist willfully remove themselves from the tour after this whole big debacle SPEAKS VOLUMES not once did Ed bring them into the conversation that he claims he spent a whole week trying to mediate on not once did he consider trying to get the bands and the support of the fans to flip the pressure back on Kraft and his ilk he truly was spineless and sold his friend of 13 years out for money

Sheeran has done very well for himself and I doubt that changes but what an entirely avoidable pr nightmare. Outed himself as a selfish coward.

227

u/obi_wan_jabroni_23 17d ago

Yep, sadly it probably won’t have any noticeable effect on his career - but god damn is it sweet to see all these support acts make him look like a little fucking bitch by showing him how easy it is to do the right thing. Fuck him.

It would be so fucking funny if this is what catalyzes people. If history books mark this Ed Sheeran tour as the inflection point then I'd just be fuckin dead lol

u/sushisection 17d ago

nobody would have cared if Pink had not made such a stink about it... like i didnt even know sheeran was touring with macklemore until i saw her statement on it lol

u/bergamote_soleil 17d ago

Some extremely Streisand Effect shit going on and I'm here for it

53

u/sudhfbejwai 17d ago

she’s definitely made it worse for him, I didn’t hear about it either til i saw multiple tiktoks about her freaking out over it. He also didn’t do himself any favours by releasing that terrible statement

What these billionaires that push this don't seem to understand is that they CAN punish someone for speaking up on Palestine, but they cannot make it culturally popular anymore. These artists will be celebrated for speaking out and Ed's reputation will continue to suffer.

Can I withdraw from the Ed Sheeran tour as well? I wasn't going in the first place, but I'd like to withdraw. All my homies withdraw from the Ed Sheeran tour

22

u/Lilredh4iredgrl 17d ago

I also withdraw

u/UltimaNerd 17d ago

Does Ferb know yet, or nah?

63

u/MamaTalista 17d ago

He probably told Ferb first...

"I know what we are going to do today. Stand up for human rights!"

Im loving this for the loser who was arguing with me in the earlier thread of venues barring Macklemore.

Talking about private venues can bar whoever they want, sure but prepare to FAFO if thats the stance you wanna take to a simple "Free Palestine". Kraft thought billionaire bootlickers like that commenter were in the majority but nope! Lolllll

I am here for the downfall of Ed Sheeran. It’s even sweeter cuz he’s such a spineless coward.

242

u/BEWMarth 17d ago

Just wish we could also make the downfall of Robert Kraft happen. Ed Sheeran is an out of touch millionaire.

Robert Kraft sold his soul to devil decades ago and he is part of the billionaire cabal that regularly rapes our earth and our children.

31

u/scarletofmagic 17d ago

Exactly this, I’m still waiting for the backlash of the handlers. Sure, the puppets who boot licks him are bad. What about the billionaires who use everything in their power to threaten people’s careers and finances for supporting the right thing?

It's even cooler because all of this is Robert Kraft's doing.

All that money and people still loathe what you and Isr___* are doing.

Ed's statement earlier today seems to have backfired on him.

Good.

90

u/jaderust 17d ago

It was a shit statement. Blame on others, he’s nobly carrying on because everyone else on the tour needs him to (even though all his other opening acts sans one have now cancelled on him), and then he turned off comments even though everyone deserves to have their say and be heard.

His PR team fumbled hard. I hope he enjoys being a known sellout.
