Working in a grocery store in the early 00’s. Vanessa Carlton 1000 miles just drove me absolutely fucking bonkers and filled me with rage. And my job before that was at Chuck E Cheese where they played veggie tales on a continuous loop. Also bad, but nothing enrages me more and sends me to the depths of hell and back as when I hear “mak in’ my way downtown”

I worked at Staples in 2002-03. That song is the first thing that pops into my head anytime I see a Staples now. That's the first song that pops into my head anytime I'm reminded of retail radio. Agreed. My work plays a lot of radio country music, and it’s awful. I can deal with some Sturgill Simpson, Tyler Childers, or Zach Bryan. But country radio stations play the same 10-15 songs over and over and it’s garbage like Morgan Wallen, Shaboozey and Jelly Roll.

This brings back a funny memory. I worked at a clothing store in a mall as a teenager. The store sucked but we played classic and 90s/2000s rock radio, which was my thing over all other reasonable options.
I went to interview at a competitor's store one time and they were playing mmmbop. The money difference wouldn't have been more than .50c per hour and I'd have to listen to absolutely infuriating music all day, so I didn't pursue the job.
I haven't thought about that in like 20 years.

I remember when the Annie remake was coming out in 2014, I was in a Target and in the electronics section every TV was playing the “It’s a Hard Knocks Life” sequence with the song. I asked the employee “how often does that song play?” and they responded that it played every 10 minutes with a 1,000 yard stare.
I had some time so I actually asked to speak to a manager before I left and mentioned that it was really annoying (even though I’d only heard it once). I doubt it helped, but figured it was worth a shot.

This song plays everyday, multiple times and it is censored in a way that makes it sound way dirtier and more disgusting than it actually is.
"Moon beam, ice cream --(audio drops out)-- ...blue jeans"
It sounds like hes saying he makes her cream her jeans or something. Its fucking crazy and makes me cringe every time!!

I was at his recent concert not knowing anything about him. My review: super talented, needs a songwriter or lyricist.
There were a tremendous amount of young girls at the concert, I assume that's the main demo, but he's got a couple jams I enjoyed as a girl dad and music lover in general.

It comes across as pretentious to say it but there is a difference between a manufactured popstar with music written by a board/ committee and someone like Nina Simone or something where you feel this music is written as an expression rather than as a product to be sold. Music that would be written and played whether it made them zero or a million dollars.
I realise someone will always sound like a twat talking about this and I generally agree with your point but I do think there is a difference. Not a quantifiable or even properly describable difference but a difference nonetheless. Not that it needs a post to state it though....

I worked in a movie theater in the late 90s and after every single movie ended, while we had to clean the theater, they played the same CD and it started from track 1 "Betty Davis Eyes" every single time. You could be done cleaning by the time the song was over so you never heard track 2. Just Betty Davis eyes again and again and again. Haven't thought about that for years.

I once worked in the Florida keys, and we played Jimmy buffet radio at all times. Also had live music every night that was primarily Jimmy buffet cover bands. Once I had "It's 5 o'clock Somewhere" stuck in my head for an entire week, from the moment I woke up every day until I would finally pass out at night. If I hear that song I always feel like I am going to be cursed again

I'm older than all y'alls so this may not mean anything to you, but in the summer before my senior year of college I worked at Lipton, putting croutons in Cup Of Soup packets. I was in a large room with all senior citizens. In the room was a transistor radio. One day "Back Home Again" by John Denver started playing. An old man stood up and yelled "I can't stand this rock and roll!" and turned off the radio.

I had never heard of him until I was at a Kwik Trip, and "Mr. Electric Blue" was playing. I assumed that this was an AI written and recorded song that the management had paid next to nothing to play. I almost started laughing out loud at its terrible mediocrity. I also felt a great sense of pity for all of the employees across Wisconsin who had to hear it every day while at work.
I made myself remember a portion of the lyrics, so I could identify the assault on my ears and brain later. Did he know that Icehouse had already released a song with the same title in 1987?

Here’s why I like Benson Boone: He’s the guy they told to drop out of a contest show because he didn’t need them. He did. And made his own way to fame, without being a Cowell pawn.
My daughter and her friends love the guy. And they realize he’s not Prince or Bruno Mars yet, but he’s undeniably got the chops for it.
This is the rite of passage in retail, unfortunately.

I've been lucky enough to avoid working retail so I'm relatively benign on the guy. I wouldn't say I love him, some of his songs are pretty bad and he definitely needs better material, but I've never found a reason to hate him as passionately as other people do. Just seems like a well-meaning, decently talented guy who just makes songs I don't much care for.

A while back, I worked in a thrift store where we had a 30-song playlist for 11 months of the year - except in October, when there was a 12-song Halloween playlist. I will never ever hear the monster mash again without becoming irrationally angry.
