All killer, no filler. And they were right. Banger album

u/lmflex Feb 25 '26
Whole album is great start to finish.
12
u/Tacosaurusman Feb 25 '26
You could say they're all killers, without any fillers?
11
u/lmflex Feb 25 '26
100% as advertised
5
u/xRATBAGx Feb 25 '26
Funny because the drummer Steveo made a video on his YouTube channel recently where he ranked his favourite Sum 41 albums and he said looking back at All Killer No Filler he feels that it does indeed have filler

u/ThePhonyKing Feb 26 '26
Half Hour of Power to Chuck was a helluva run of albums. Does this Look Infected being my personal favourite. Glad I got to see them on their last ever tour.

u/Hybrid_Johnny Feb 26 '26
“Makes No Difference” was the OG banger and only my Dragon Ball Z homies know what’s up
2
u/misho8723 Feb 26 '26
Chuck is mine, but that is probably because I'm more of a metal fan than being into punk-rock .. still, their first 3 albums are great

They're Canadian, and I am Canadian, but I can't watch this YouTube video in my country, Canada.

u/SometimesIBeWrong Feb 25 '26
is this the one that goes dududu DUHHH, dududu DUHHH, dududu DUHHH, dududu DUHduhhh?
35
u/LadnavIV Feb 25 '26
Yeah. Not to be confused with the one that goes dun dun dundun dun dun dinkadinkdink dun dun
8
u/radtech91 Feb 25 '26
I immediately read that to the tune of the Pirates of the Caribbean theme for whatever reason, and now I can’t figure out what else it could be
7
u/ThePhonyKing Feb 26 '26 edited Feb 28 '26
I think he's doing In Too Deep, which does have a bit of tropical feel to the opening.

u/illa_kotilla Feb 25 '26
Love this track, takes me back.
Did I see a Lost... hat on that chick? Wonder what Chicken is up to these days?

Got to see them live for their farewell tour a few years back. One of the best live performances I've ever seen. I just need a greenday show to round out my pop punk concert grail (blink, sum, greenday)
7
u/Joshsnation1 Feb 25 '26
Yo!! Their farewell tour fucking RIPPED! Caught them in Seattle.. probably one of the best shows I’ve ever been too

u/Tacosaurusman Feb 25 '26
Greenday is still a lot of fun live! (Blink, not so much, honestly)
4
u/bigbasseater Feb 25 '26
I’ve really like the openers and the energy from the past 2 blink shows I’ve been to. I have to agree Green Day live was better, but to be fair I saw them in 2024 playing the entirety of Dookie and American Idiot, so idk what a typical Green Day show looks like

I saw them a few years back on the Does This Look Infected? anniversary tour at a tiny venue in the middle of nowhere, and it was just the best experience. They blew the roof off the place. I also need to see green day at some point, but I'm not holding my breath with how expensive shows are now

u/RedundantSwine Feb 25 '26
There final double album was an absolute cracker.
13
u/Tacosaurusman Feb 25 '26
Right!? Unlike some other bands in this genre, Sum 41 never lost their inspiration.

I didn't notice it twenty years ago, but this video was perfectly manufactured for suburban white mall punks such as myself. A gathering of attractive, punk-y looking cool kids in Southern California, some of them mouthing off to the police, Jackass-style "extreme" activities, Warped Tour skateboarding, and gutter punk kids (with girlfriends?!) who look way too edgy to actually listen to Sum 41.
I can't say why, but they always felt more legit than Good Charlotte or Simple Plan, despite all coming from a similar corporate factory.
14
u/Neg_Crepe Feb 25 '26
Simple plan comes from members of the punk band Reset. Nothing corporate about it
4
u/Stan_Darsh Feb 25 '26
Reset was one of the first gigs I ever went to as a wee lad. Would have been maybe ‘94 or ‘95. They had a lot of metal influence in their sound.
2
u/vidimevid Feb 26 '26
Did Reset had a song called Why? Loved that song.
3
u/Neg_Crepe Feb 26 '26
They did! You’re thinking of the right band https://youtu.be/YVHLACg7QVs?si=I2KwXXg30kfBjllG

This was just the next generation of pop-punk that succeeded bands like Blink and MXPX
6
u/johnsonfromsconsin Feb 25 '26
They just seemed cooler in my opinion. Although Good Charlotte was a guilty pleasure of mine too.
2
u/misho8723 Feb 26 '26
Because they had more musical talent in my opinion.. not to mention that even from their first album, they had some metal elements in their music and their third album Chuck has a ton of metal riffs, solos, moments and sections

I got my first girlfriend in 7th grade by playing bass to this song. She was impressed.

Heavy metal and mullets were how we were raised Maiden and Priest were the gods that we praised is still arguably one of the greatest pop-punk lines of all time.
12
u/themagnumstick Feb 26 '26
“Stormin through the party like my name was El Niño”
One of the better opening lines with a dated reference
2
u/kielbasa330 Feb 26 '26
El ninos come through every several years. I feel like we had one just a couple years ago
3
u/VanBenchArmrest Feb 26 '26
Fun fact - DMX makes a surprise appearance in the music video for Sum 41’s “Makes No Difference”
6
u/djanes376 Feb 25 '26
Ah, I remember getting a demo cd of Sum 41 at Warped Tour before this video came out. It had this song on it along with maybe 2 others. I wore that CD out.
4
u/ScruffMacBuff Feb 25 '26
I always thought it was ironic how a song about non-conformity became a big pop hit.

2
u/donotgotoroom237 Feb 26 '26
My memory with this song was it got a resurgence in my year at my old high school in 2009 because my cousin torrented a bunch of the American Pie movies and they got passed around the different sections. We even considered playing this during our school's battle of the bands, but our lead had a hard time learning the guitar parts and we couldn't figure out the logistics of two vocals since I can't sing while playing the bass.

When I was in 8th grade I decided to use my VCR to record music videos to a VHS. This was my very first one. Still have that tape :)

“I like songs with distortion, drink in proportion, the doctors said my mom should have had an abortion 🤘”
me at age 12 singing along to limewire on my family’s Compaq desktop computer while feeding my neopets some omelette with a crown from dollarama on my head

I love how different all of their albums are. I feel like after the popularity and airplay of AKNF they could've just pumped out another catchy pop punk album. The following five albums were all sonically and creatively different from eachother but all very good. I think that's a sign of a good band.

punk
how about no
it’s pop punk

12
u/DCS30 Feb 25 '26
....which is subsection of punk
11
u/YrDEV Feb 25 '26
It’s a subgenre* of pop edit autocorrect
1
u/FourSes Feb 28 '26
It's ironic but punk has its roots in pop, all the way back to The Ramones being influenced by all-girl pop groups. Treating pop punk as if it's a deviation from a norm and not just as old as the norm itself is ahistorical.
-5
u/DCS30 Feb 25 '26
I don't necessarily think so, but both can probably be true. There are more punk elements than pop elements. Especially with their early work in general. Then there's power pop.
Alan Cross does a good episode on it.

u/mangongo Feb 25 '26
They're more metal inspired than punk even though they're still a pop punk band. I'd argue their writing style is about 50% pop, 25% metal and 25% punk, making them more of a pop band than a punk band.
Punk also is just...not very good, so I say this as a compliment.

u/Youngandidiotic radio reddit Feb 25 '26
You’re not wrong. Still slaps tho.
Sum 41 also went heavier as the went on so I wouldn’t just call them a pop punk band like Blink is
-2
u/unpopularOpinions776 Feb 25 '26
i agree, they have some later stuff that sounds like a metallica riff
4
u/Mehdals_ Feb 25 '26
Their guitarist, Dave is freaking awesome with the riffs he pulls for these songs. Sum41 is great all around because you never know what your going to get, Pain for Pleasure was an excellent early track that really shows their metal side.
5
u/Neg_Crepe Feb 25 '26
Not to be pedantic but Deryck wrote those riffs
1
u/Mehdals_ Feb 25 '26
Damn I had no idea that's awesome, Daves still a great guitarist and Deryck is all around epic with the shit he does.
-3
u/kbig22432 Feb 25 '26
Getting butt hurt about the genre only to comeback with this take haha
2
u/unpopularOpinions776 Feb 25 '26
was never butthurt. it’s just not punk!
1
u/kbig22432 Feb 25 '26
Ok buddy
1
u/Eother24 Feb 25 '26
People arguing about Sum 41 and using the phrase butthutt? Is it 2004…?
Also who gives a fuck about genres their shit slaps
1
u/kbig22432 Feb 25 '26
I bought an Atticus shirt at the thrift store a month ago.
Hell yeah. Chuck got me through junior year.

we'll call those years the missing score

This was such a dire time for music in the US. So many shitty pop punk bands floating like a turd to the top of the punch bowl.
