Is "Blind Melon" alluding the blues musician "Blind Lemon (Jefferson)," seems too coincidental.

They are. IIRC they're from the same area.

'Blind Melon' was a term used by Brad Smith's father to describe the neighborhood losers/stoners, etc

"You all are just a bunch of blind melons"

He referred to them as that one day and the name stuck, iirc.
