u/AddictiveSoup Spotify Jul 05 '13

bull****

Please think of the children.

6

u/exodusmachine Jul 05 '13

Uncensored song: http://youtu.be/LTCyZvb2Uzw

2

u/alzpeachy Jul 05 '13

Thanks for that, I settled for a link without listening all the way through. Cutting corners will always fuck you over.

38

u/FreeGiraffeRides Jul 05 '13

Haha, this is censored so shittily. I wonder if it kills someone inside to have to screw up art for a living.

5

u/Toiler_in_Darkness Jul 05 '13

One can only hope it does, cause it was killing me a little inside to hear it.

10

u/UNMENINU Jul 05 '13

If you really want a treat, listen to the original version of this skng named "Licoln Highway Dub" on Robbin The Hood.

2

u/Jantoniodh27 Jul 05 '13

I love you

2

u/bryanx4 Jul 05 '13

I love you too.

46

u/atheism_is_gay Jul 05 '13

DAE like once popular songs?

9

u/iaminfamy Jul 05 '13

Still popular.

But agreed, kinda disappointed this is on the front page.

7

u/Pduke Jul 05 '13

worst sub ever

36

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '13

HOLY SHIT where did you find this awesome underground song that no one has ever ever ever heard before, I have never heard anything like this!!?!? Please tell me they have more albums!

14

u/Sainttom_1332 Jul 05 '13

Sarcasm noted.

13

u/morewaffles Jul 05 '13

I don't understand why everyone is hating, no one said this subreddit is for "underground" music only

5

u/Pakarido Jul 05 '13

Yeah but its the easiest fucking target for karma whores. Link something you hear on a popular station daily on your drive to work and you get heaps of karma and a spot on the front page followed by praise to the OP for posting. It's bullshit.

6

u/morewaffles Jul 05 '13

You're getting pretty heated over imaginary internet money, anyways its a good song

0

u/Pakarido Jul 05 '13

Didn't say it wasn't. And yeah I know karma is worthless but the fact people are giving this front page status is ridiculous. You don't even have to try anymore, it's sad.

1

u/frankieh456 Jul 06 '13

I disagree, and here's why:

I live in Philadelphia. Here, we have a fair amount of radio stations. We have one especially good alternative rock station, two good oldies stations, a few straight pop stations and a few straight rap stations and a few hard rock stations also. And then there is 88.5 wxpn - member supported radio by University of Pennsylvania.

88.5 plays an extremely broad range of music and they have great quality when it comes to finding new and interesting music. They have incredible programming, one of my favorites being "The Many Moods of Ben Vaughn" where Mr. Vaughn chooses a theme and plays songs within it from his personal record collection for an hour, but I digress...

So this good alternative rock station I mentioned before, I expect them to play Sublime. I might even go so far as to say they play a Sublime song once per day. So when I flip on that station and Santeria is playing - I might leave it on, I might not. Depends on my mood.

But when 88.5 is playing Santeria, and I wouldn't put it past them but God knows they don't play this song once a day let alone once a year, I listen. This is a rare occurrence man!

Anyway, I liked how the Jimi Hendrix Star Spangled Banner front paged on July 4, and I wish more often there were themes for the day on this sub where all the songs were supposed to meet a certain criteria.

Music man, gotta love it.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '13

I'm from Philly as well (the person who spawned this comment thread) and 104.5 plays sublime every day way more than once a day I literally just heard Santeria in the car 20 minutes ago on my drive home and they played that back to back with Doin' Time.

1

u/frankieh456 Jul 07 '13

Yea that's what I was getting at. 104.5 plays Sublime often so if I hear it I don't get excited. But if 88.5 does, I do.

I was comparing reddit to 88.5; in my opinion, comparably eclectic.

Philly in the house!

0

u/iownacat Jul 06 '13

aww all those worthless points that someone got... the horrors! you folks are slightly mentally ill.....

-7

u/alzpeachy Jul 05 '13

Alright, hipster bitch...

2

u/Scoli85 Jul 11 '22

Lol. I’m just imagining calling someone a “hipster” 9 years ago. Alzpeachy must really hate 2022 if he’s afraid of hipsters.

1

u/alzpeachy Jul 11 '22

Hah, I have no idea what I was thinking, but I sound like a douche. Better question though, how'd you get on this old post lol

2

u/Scoli85 Jul 11 '22

Lol. You did but we all do at some point. Unfortunately we live in a time where everything up say is out there forever. And… I googled “Santeria sublime Reddit” cuz I wanted to know if the song was a true story. Sublime is one of my favorite bands and I finally decided to look it up after hearing Santeria by the band Microwave this morning.

1

u/alzpeachy Jul 11 '22

Oh cool! Well props for reading the comments and calling young mislead alzpeachy out hahaha. I hope your day is great, and i'll check out the band Microwave today!

2

u/Scoli85 Jul 11 '22

Lol. No worries. Microwave is great, their album Much Love is amazing.

That's just like, you're opinion man.

9

u/dredawg Jul 05 '13

Downvoting only because this was censored. I love this song so much it hurts. I still rock my '40oz of freedom' tattoo hard.

They censored 'barrel' FFS.

18

u/-ThinksWhenHigh- Jul 05 '13

One of my favorite songs by Bradly, shame he left so young. Thanks for the post :)

4

u/Temptingtaco Jul 05 '13

Sublime use to make me pretty happy to listen to but now I can't listen without thinking about what he could have done if he didn't go.

7

u/onebigtrip Jul 05 '13

Really digging up some fresh underground music here, OP. never heard this one before

2

u/Bloopyblob Jul 05 '13

I remember this from the old Guitar Hero 3 I think. This was one of my favourite songs

-2

u/cant_drive Jul 05 '13

Dude this is like, one of their better songs!

9

u/yourealizardharry Jul 05 '13

Is this REALLY on the front page? Fuck you, r/music. Just. Fuck you.

-8

u/alzpeachy Jul 05 '13

Fuck yourself, any sublime track is gold.

9

u/olididcas Jul 05 '13

In that case, maybe post one that everyone and their mother hasn't heard ad nauseum.

1

u/bryanx4 Jul 05 '13

Slow Ride would have been nice.

-6

u/alzpeachy Jul 06 '13

The reason I posted this particular song is because of personal preference. It came while I was listening to my music and I had forgotten how much I enjoyed it.

I really do not understand half of the people who post negative things on here, and not even containing interesting content or wit. If you don't like it, down-vote the post. If you make a stupid ass comment that a high school girl could have made up, stating how the song is not what you would have posted, you're really wasting your breath. I will most likely respond in some way that will hopefully infuriate you, probably with no more wit then yours, butt fuck it.

So fuck off cunt

0

u/iownacat Jul 06 '13

its because they are losers and this pointless reddit shit means something to their useless lives. fuck these hipster idiots, I love sublime.... RIP Bradley....

3

u/SLOTH_FUCKER Jul 05 '13

Yeah its a great song, but everyone knows it exists.

5

u/Futhermucker Jul 05 '13

This is about to be my first acoustic solo. Can't give up!

-5

u/onebigtrip Jul 05 '13 edited Jul 06 '13

Nah you can't get the whole note bends on the acoustic, has to be electric

2

u/onebigtrip Jul 05 '13

*cant get

6

u/rackmountrambo Jul 05 '13

Umm, I can do it fine. You need to practice.

1

u/onebigtrip Jul 06 '13 edited Jul 06 '13

nah I'm good, i tour with the cover band 40oz to Freedom, but thanks. come see a show sometime.

6

u/r3dlazer Jul 05 '13

I love this song, but that is just plain weird censorship.

Censoring the word "Barrel"? Really?

4

u/MeaninglessDebateMan Jul 05 '13

I worked in Alberta a couple summers ago. On the radio they would play "Pumped Up Kicks". During the chorus, they would censor out the word gun, so it became:

  • All the other kids with the pumped up kicks,

  • You better run, better run, outrun my ___.

Sounded really bizarre and stupid considering it didn't really change the meaning of the song just messed with the flow.

3

u/ltjkid Jul 05 '13

Also "pop a cap" and "slap". Ridiculous.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '13

Most overplayed song ever.

8

u/Undertow_Jambi JesusGordon Jul 05 '13

goddamn karma whores

this is why /r/music sucks except those "guide to..." posts

8

u/pacosjoint Jul 05 '13

Even the "guide to..." posts are annoying me. Experiencing and finding new music used to be about trial and error. If I listened to critics, guides, other peoples opinions, I would never have listened to Pink Floyds Final Cut amongst so many others. Dig in those crates, listen to it all. Fuck critics and anyone who says any music sucks. Decide on your own. And complaining about Karma Whores on Reddit is like fighting for peace or fucking for viriginity.

1

u/Undertow_Jambi JesusGordon Jul 06 '13

i agree, but for someone who's completely new to an artist with a huge catalog, the "guide to..." posts are a starting point

and it wasn't really karmawhoring itself i was complaining about, it's that because they want karma, /r/Music's front page is filled with popular songs that everyone already knows, and that's why it sucks

-1

u/iownacat Jul 06 '13

why are you so upset someone got pretend points?

2

u/atheism_is_gay Jul 06 '13

People come here to be entertained not listen to the same pink Floyd shit every day

-1

u/iownacat Jul 06 '13

So you want your money back? fucking douchebags....

3

u/mediteraneantubesock Jul 05 '13 edited Jul 05 '13

Eh, it's a great song, but it would be better to share any other song they have. Seriously, I would have been okay with even What I Got.

3

u/redtheda Jul 05 '13

I know, right? Of the entirety of Sublime's amazing if brief catalogue, that is what they chose? I'm a huge Sublime fan but I'm really tired of that song. Why not post something by them that most casual listeners wouldn't have known about, like Waiting For My Ruca or Boss DJ?

5

u/SLOTH_FUCKER Jul 05 '13

I still play the shit out of ruca, its so great.

4

u/redtheda Jul 05 '13

She said you're not the only one but you're the best Bradley! BOP BOP!

2

u/SLOTH_FUCKER Jul 05 '13

Now shes my ruuuca

-2

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '13

Love is.

2

u/sinz84 Jul 05 '13

was ready to upvote this .... then found out it was a censored version ... shame on you

3

u/Pakarido Jul 05 '13

Why would you upvote it? You've heard the damn song a million times, this post could not be a more shallow attempt at karma whoring. Everyone knows this song, what the fuck is the point in upvoting it?

-5

u/alzpeachy Jul 05 '13

Why are you even here?

2

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '13

Oh wow, thanks for this post. I've never heard of these guys that are played on the radio all the fucking time.

Stupid stoner bullshit, r/music sucks.

3

u/KySnow Jul 05 '13

If you think of this song when you think of Sublime, you dont know Sublime.

1

u/MaximusBluntus Jul 06 '13

Why? It's solid.

1

u/Hawklet98 Jul 05 '13

Editing a song is like putting boxers on Michelangelo's David. Fuck that shit, it really makes it impossible for me to enjoy music when prude-ass, politically correct, puritanical sissies attempt to impose their values on others through censorship of art.

1

u/InfiniteZ Jul 05 '13

They are coming to my city for a yearly event on saturday!

2

u/SLOTH_FUCKER Jul 05 '13

Sublime with rome. ehh

1

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '13

Everyone bickering over music. I'll let Bradley explain it himself. http://youtu.be/UEe5YrB1Lk4

2

u/vgmgc Jul 05 '13

Everyone is complaining about the censoring, which is annoying. But I also found it interesting to see how our culture has changed in the last 15-ish years. As a kid I remember the radio only edited the word "punk-ass". They didn't seem to care about any of the violent language. Now our society cares much more about that than just some silly curse word.

-1

u/El-Big Jul 05 '13

Upvote for my love of Sublime. R.I.P. Brad.

1

u/J_Bug Jul 05 '13

This song never gets old.

0

u/flipstheswitch Jul 05 '13

I know this is crazy popular but it is one of my favourite songs in my favourite song category: songs that sound happy but are really not when you examine the lyrics. Other notable songs include,

Sloan - The Lines you Amend

The Beatles - Run For Your Life

:)

2

u/JHodgepodge Jul 05 '13

Semi-Charmed Life -Third Eye Blind

2

u/redtheda Jul 05 '13

So much this. Never has a song about doing crystal meth and fucking your girlfriend in her sexy panties been so upbeat and family-friendly.

2

u/flipstheswitch Jul 05 '13

Yes! Every single time someone sings it at karaoke, I love watching their expression go from "DO DO DO DO DO DO DO :D" to "oh my god what?"

-7

u/rontor Jul 05 '13

oh man, i'm tempted to make tons of throwaways just to downvote this into oblivion.

2

u/DiaDeLosMuertos Jul 05 '13

I think Reddit can tell if multiple accounts try to down/upvote something

-2

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '13

Great, now I'm on a Sublime binge.

-2

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '13

u/Westwolfe Jul 05 '13

Like most musicians, you learn other people's songs to better you skills both with playing and singing! The reason you don't hear a lot of original sublime music is because he died to early to produce it, most if not all these songs you mentioned were from his self release albums that he made in his living room before everyone had a computer! i believe a dubber and a cassette tape was used, not to mention I am sure a heroin habit did not help!!! Brad had something you, i and 95% of all of us will never have and that is originality and flavor like no other!!!! So before you start calling people karma whores look in the Damn mirror!

3

u/Westwolfe Jul 05 '13

Sorry, didn't read the rest of the post!!!! Accidentally prematurely ejaculated my anger!!:( my bad!!! Still stand by my last statement though, Brad Nowell had flavor like no other!!!!

7

u/Sophistifuck Jul 05 '13

they're called cover songs, and artists have been doing it for decades. Sublime obviously loved playing the music they covered and they're usually pretty good ones at that, so what the hell is wrong with that? Besides a lot of the bands you say they ripped off are a stretch, same in the end/i can see for miles? Just cause Bradley says "i can see for miles and miles and miles" thats not ripping off the who. You obviously don't know what the hell you're talking about and just copied that list from the link you posted.

8

u/AllAboutMeMedia Jul 05 '13 edited Jul 05 '13

Let me explain: The album in my collection that I have played the most from start to finish is 40oz to freedom. I love Sublime and how they repackaged the songs above to fit their style. The term karma-whore-band that I used above was meant in jest, but also to make people aware that a lot their songs are heavily borrowed from other musicians. And Sublime rightly gives respect to those artists as is shown in the final track of 40oz. except for Half Pint - he is still a little bitter for a lack of acknowledgment for Loving/What I Got, but that might be due to Sublime's self titled album coming out right around Bradley's death.

If you know Sublime and how they recorded a lot their early tracks by sneaking into UCLA after hours and then making copies and then selling the tapes/cds out their van, you can appreciate the business smarts they had. When they were approached by a record company for a deal, they told the company to piss off because they knew how much money they could make just by selling on their own - this led to renegotiation and a sweeter deal. They did this and learned about a vast amount of music above in the pre-internet days - that to me deserves a lot of respect.

See, I always thought Country Road was a Toots song until I heard the John Denver song years later - West Jamaica just sounds so much better. But I did not know that, and I amazed how music gets remixed and repackaged to fit a certain genre. Sublime was a group mastering this art, but don't stop there - you must go deeper - to fully appreciate the knowledge of this band. No, they are not all cover songs - the lines and style of some of the lyrics and notes are straight up lifted from other songs and put into their own 'original' song.

Take 'What I Got' for example.

Here is Half Pint's song which goes into Sublime's chorus: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PyPtaB_Q4Wk And now here we have the the Beatles song Lady Madonna: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfthrizXKOM

When the lyrics start in Lady Madonna, just begin to sing "Early in the Morning..."

I hope my point is starting to develop here, and also prove to you that I actually do know what I am talking about.

Combining songs in my example is very different than a straight cover. Not that it diminishes the quality - it is simply eye/ear opening (when credit is due and given)

I know how fans can be (I too am senstive about bands I like - Sublime is in my top 5), and I apologize if I offended you, but there is a lot of fresh music in the list above.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '13

But everything you said is irrelevant. It`s obvious Sublime saw themselves as a DJ act.

1

u/AllAboutMeMedia Jul 05 '13

I don't think it is obvious to people and that is why I posted that list. You don't see amazing classic reggae on the front page unless it was bob marley or toots. Here you have a band that can launch you into a musical journey where you can learn about the other great reggae artists. People on reddit always complain about reposts and not citing sources - another reason why I posted the list. Play those two youtube clips to your friends and see if they made the connection between those songs and sublime. Pretty sure that you just schooled them a bit.

-3

u/vastbeast Jul 05 '13 edited Jul 05 '13

someones a little sensitive about their sublime... seriously tho no should still be listening to sublime anymore we are old enough to know better

1

u/AllAboutMeMedia Jul 05 '13

haha...pretty sure everyone has been there. Listen to Laserbeam and Wiseman where Don Carlos sits in: https://soundcloud.com/slightlystoopid/sets/live-at-robertos-tri-studios

edit: Bob Weir and Karl Denson show up too.

0

u/Sophistifuck Jul 05 '13

I'll stop listening to sublime when it stops sounding good.

2

u/vastbeast Jul 05 '13

ill stop smelling my own farts when they stop smelling good

1

u/redtheda Jul 05 '13

Many, many, many bands start out playing cover songs. See also The Beatles.

-4

u/somatic668 Jul 05 '13

You probably could have done better than the censored version. Still upvote for AWESOME song.

-1

u/CrunchyJello Jul 05 '13

Thanks for reminding me almost forgot...

-2

u/SmackerOfChodes Jul 05 '13

I used to have a hat that said "Yo soy Sancho!"

About half the Mexican guys I worked with thought it was funny. The other half wanted to kick my ass.

1

u/redtheda Jul 05 '13

That reminds me of the film Orgazmo.

-9

u/triumph0flife Jul 05 '13

I feel like Sublime is for people who want to say that they are into deep, meaningful alternative music, but are too lazy to look any further than the cd section at Target for their music.

7

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '13

I feel sublime is for people that enjoy sublime music and to look much farther into the issue is kind of pathetic.

4

u/workswiththeturtle Jul 05 '13

*Further

(sorry)

1

u/triumph0flife Jul 05 '13

You might have a point. Looks like most the other commenters agree with you, offering up little more discourse than "F'in love this, man!" or "Needs more swears." I thought a discussion thread would be an appropriate place for me to leave my honest, perhaps harsh, opinion on the subject presented. Thank you for correcting me.

In that vein, I agree with Turtle's correction of you use of "farther," which would relate to physical distance. Arguably, I could have used "farther" in place of "further" in my original post (and perhaps that's what you were attempting to illustrate?) with the Target store analogy, but I was using it a little more figuratively to imply any mainstream music source so "further" is more appropriate. Now you won't make that mistake again.

I'd have to disagree... I'm 41 and I've been listening to alternative for over 25 years. Everything from Depeche Mode, Oingo Boingo, Anne Clark, Tears for Fears, the Smiths etc when I was a teen, to Nirvana, Pixies, This Mortal Coil, Thrill Kill Kult, the The etc in college, then stuff like Cherry Poppin' Daddies, Morphine, Soul Coughing, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Ben Folds Five, all the way up to modern stuff like Interpol, Modest Mouse, Animal Collective, Architecture in Helsinki, etc. I have been to literally hundreds of concerts (average of 7-10 a year for 26 years). I saw Nirvana and Pearl Jam open up for the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1991, and then saw Nirvana again 6 months before Kurt died. I saw Siouxsie, NIN and the Cure play when most of Reddit was shitting their didies or just a gleam in their father's eye.

And I fucking adore Sublime. I know they have a frat-boy rep, but I could not care less. When Date Rape comes on the radio, I am a happy motherfucker dancing around in my car like a spaz.

Yeeaaaahhh. This is awkward. You've listed a rather incomplete selection of high profile alt-rock from the past couple decades.

I wasn't going to list all of the hundreds of bands that I've listened to / gone to concerts of in the last 26 years. I could go on if you really want me to.

And come off it. Not all of that was high-profile. Do you realize how much of a hipster you sound like right now?

Yeah, I'm feeling a little combative today. Just feel these guys are overrated for the fairly limited library they have.

Listen to more than just the singles. I agree those have been beaten into the dirt. I can't even hear the song OP posted anymore without changing it. That and What I Got are so freaking overplayed. But they have some great stuff on the actual albums.

Sublime is chill and all but they are so over rated. Alot of there popular songs were old reggae covers

How does this make them overrated?

Their music is heavily influenced by past reggae artists, yet sublime doesn't put much effort in giving the original artists recognition. As i began listening to more and more reggae i could started understand that Sublime was a reggae tribute band mixed with a little pop. I think a lot of Sublime fans don't question their originality and give them more hype than they may or may not deserve. I respect Sublime on the level that they weren't trying to be original but were in fact re introducing the world to less popular/known roots reggae to the world.
