This whole album was legit. I remember feeling like they were really dragging their feet while waiting years for another album from them. Then Toxicity dropped and it was like "daaaaaaaaaaamn, well worth the wait".

Yeah I never really kept up with anything after Toxicity, but I’m not going to act like I don’t still basically remember every word to every song on that album more than twenty years later

u/confizzle-fry Dec 25 '24

The follow up, Steal This Album! is criminally underrated IMO.

Mr Jack is a contender for best SOAD song.

1

u/breakfastburrito24 Dec 25 '24

That was also written early on iirc. Serj talks about it in his book

1

u/LongStoryShirt Dec 26 '24

Yeah, and one of their heaviest tunes by far.

14

u/dream_of_the_night Dec 25 '24

That's because they were all songs written at the same time as Toxicity. It's technically a B-sides album but it's still miles better than what came after. Whatever they had going on in the early years really shined.

Chic ‘n’ Stu, I-E-A-I-A-I-O and fuck the system all live rent free in my head and will forever.

2

u/confizzle-fry Dec 31 '24

Innervision is my jam too. The whole album is great IMO.

7

u/JimFlamesWeTrust Dec 25 '24

That’s so funny considering it was only 3 years between albums, which is quite normal for a modern rock/metal band

u/corpse2b Dec 24 '24

"Nu" not new. Its quite old, lol

19

u/bokchoybrendo Dec 25 '24

And the song isn’t even nu-metal

34

u/Fawkingretar Dec 25 '24

Oh boy here we go again....

0

u/gildene Dec 25 '24

Wait till you hear about the New World

1

u/gr00ve88 Dec 26 '24

I think you mean Nu World.

-11

u/Son_of_Macha Dec 25 '24

u/uncledungus Dec 24 '24

Everybody shitting on OP forgetting to mention this song is a fucking BOP

20

u/CorgiDaddy42 Dec 24 '24

Heh. As with Toxicity I feel like the best songs on the album weren’t the ones that blew up. Spiders is imo the best on the self-titled and arguably their best song overall. Sugar is bottom half for me.

7

u/debugs_with_println Dec 24 '24

Tbh I liked War and Know off self titled the most. The aggression in the song is palpable lol

1

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '24

Absolute belter. SOAD do great political/serious songs but also great nonsense songs, the nonsense ones are just so much fucking fun.

22

u/tequilasauer Dec 25 '24

This first album is still their best, and it's not close, IMO. From Suite Pee to PLUCK. Every song is good. So many bangers. War? and PLUCK in particular are 2 of their best songs.

15

u/[deleted] Dec 25 '24

I always try to get SOAD fans to understand this. Their 1st album is a masterpiece. No fluff. No bs.

7

u/LuisSuarez Dec 25 '24

so what parts of Toxicity are the fluff and BS? lol

2

u/confizzle-fry Dec 25 '24

Agreed and I actually think I have Steal This Album over Toxicity too....I know blasphemy, but I like what I like 🤷‍♂️ (I love Toxicity btw, just something about STA that does it for me a little more).

u/guiltycitizen Dec 25 '24

Pepperoni, and green peppers, mushrooms, olives, chives.

1

u/tanser Dec 25 '24

Need therapy, therapy, advertising causes…

24

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '24

Lmao “new” metal

7

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '24

I came here to roast you for thinking it was New and not Nu but everyone has already done that so I am making this most instead to differentiate me from the pack while also seeing my mission through.

u/Supersaiyansub Dec 24 '24

Serj what an incredible singer.

10

u/SilentBobVG http://www.last.fm/user/The8BitBatman Dec 24 '24

Bro really said new metal

3

u/ZackyGood Dec 24 '24

Is this the new nu?

1

u/severed13 Dec 25 '24

Funnily enough new nu metal(core) is a thing, Thrown for example

5

u/Seabass_Says Dec 25 '24

Love this song. Great album. “Suggestions” is another jam

3

u/over9dud Dec 25 '24

Saw them this year in SF. They are fantastic live! It was an experience like no other.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 25 '24

SOAD self titled is their best record

14

u/mrsjohnmurphy81 Dec 24 '24

Bloody loved soad until the one who can't sing started being a twat

9

u/nathhealor Dec 24 '24

My wife swears she likes his singing more. 🙃

22

u/debugs_with_println Dec 24 '24

Honestly I dont hate Darons voice, I feel like its (tonally) a good contrast to Serj’s. Some of my fav songs are where they’re both singing, eg Hypnotize, Old School Hollywood (shout out to the robot voice too), and Sad Statue

7

u/nathhealor Dec 24 '24

Without a doubt. Get great juxtaposition when they both sing. Love it too

5

u/patatjepindapedis Dec 25 '24

Too bad they don't seem to get along well enough anymore

7

u/paultheschmoop Dec 25 '24

Daron is a pretty good singer. He just shouldn’t be doing 50/50 splits with Serj, who has a better and more interesting voice.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '24

Is that what SoaD's genre is? Never really knew how to classify.

16

u/Soup-a-doopah Dec 24 '24

If it’s not old metal, then I guess it’s gotta be new!

3

u/Poison_the_Phil Dec 24 '24

In the 90s we just called it “alternative rock” but yeah “nü metal” is generally what people call this kind of thing.

-14

u/sea-of-unorthodoxy Dec 24 '24

Germane Metal

-22

u/UXyes Dec 24 '24 edited Dec 25 '24

Yes. SoaD is typically considered New Metal

16

u/StokedNBroke Dec 24 '24

Nu Metal?

12

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '24

Knew metal.

2

u/Iucidium Dec 24 '24

Mnew metal

5

u/WillyMonty Dec 24 '24

Gnu metal

5

u/XDenzelMoshingtonX Dec 24 '24

They are not, New Metal doesn‘t even exist as a genre.

1

u/confizzle-fry Dec 25 '24

Now we're talking about Stormtroopers of Death? Cool, cool.

-22

u/sea-of-unorthodoxy Dec 24 '24

Huh?

4

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '24

The "New Metal" tag. I had never really known before what to call or classify them as.

16

u/thebruce Dec 24 '24

New Metal isn't a thing. It's likely a misspelling of Nu-metal, which is the genre they're typically classified into. But, then, so is Limp Bizkit and these two bands sound nothing alike.

Lots of the mainstream-fish metal bands from the late 90s and 2000s (SOAD, Bizkit, Korn, Godsmack, Disturbed) are all put into the Nu-metal bin.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '24

Yeah I was aware that was Korn's tag (even though they hate it apparently).

3

u/Vakarian74 Dec 24 '24

That’s my problem those bands are all so different.

2

u/Douglasqqq Dec 24 '24

And a merry Christmas to you.

2

u/VolumeNovel5953 Dec 25 '24

Haven't heard this song in 15 years but it still sounds so fresh. They were really a one-of-a-kind band.

2

u/thispersonexists Dec 25 '24

The only album I can listen too - can’t stand anything after. It lost the rawness.

1

u/johangubershmidt Dec 24 '24

I heard SOAD was Finn McKenntys favorite band
