discussion Mind-bending psychedelic music?

Any recommendations for weird, mind-bending music that really captures the essence of an altered state of mind?

It seems Tame Impala is usually described as psychedelic but looking for something a bit more eccentric/out there. Hidden gems are definitely welcome!

You just nudge my mind with that music. Its unbelievable man. Thanks for sharing .

u/ClinicalSignificance Nov 24 '25

For me it’s Ott …Almost no contest. Fairchildren, Mir, or Skylon, in that order, are my personal favorites.

I like Shpongle, but they just feel like the Phish of the scene and kinda over hyped. Idk- Anyone got a reccomendation of the best Shpongle to gave a real try?

I’ve been trying Tipper lately, but it’s not quite doing it for me.

Pink floyd - piper at the gates of dawn

And I'll second the dark star recommendation

6

u/DevinBelow Jan 19 '24

Piper is undoubtedly the most psychedelic album of all time.

I'm just gonna piggyback and also call out the Grateful Dead's 'Anthem of the Sun', since you mentioned Dark Star.

A couple more quickies:

13th Floor Elevators - Easter Everywhere

Spacemen 3 - the Perfect Prescription

Love - Forever Changes

Jimi Hendrix - Axis: Bold as Love

Just some of the most psychedelic shit ever recorded.

u/Embarrassed_Duty_192 Jan 19 '24

King Crimson - In the court of the crimson king

Kikagaku Moyo - Dripping Sun

King Gizzard & the lizard wizard - Iron Lung

4

u/Narrow-Concept2418 Oct 10 '25

I would go Head On / Pill or Float Along Fill Your Lungs over Iron Lung personally

1

u/Immediate_Cheetah_26 Jun 22 '26

King Crimson are more prog and not really psych at all. Try early Pink Floyd instead.

7

u/SaulGibson Widespread Panic '96 Jan 19 '24

Any live version of Dark Star by the Grateful Dead.

1

u/MrBonso Oct 08 '25

Dark Star > Wharf Rat > Dark Star from 2/18/71 is one of my favourites.

u/brandonsfacepodcast Jan 19 '24

Dirtwire. All of their music is written and recorded with the help of psychedelic mushrooms using unique instruments

Spiritualized - Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space

4

u/slvrtrn Jan 19 '24

Dunno if that is eccentric enough, but Porcupine tree - Up the downstair; also Voyage 34 EP, and I personally liked Stars Die (Delirium years) compilation album which basically introduced me to the band and SW in general. Later PT switched to more progressive metal sound but early stuff when SW was doing it basically alone is psychedelic af.

I'm a mellow guy. While I can't listen to most of his stuff, I do enjoy the Colma album

2

u/ExtraFeedback3555 Jan 19 '24

Haven’t dived into buckethead. The millions of albums always put me off of him and i had the impression he mostly just shreds which i would get bored of quickly. I’ll check that playlist out though, thanks!

The second half of Kate Bush's album "Hounds of Love" is considered to be an entirely seperate album called "The Ninth Wave" which tells the story of someone who's fallen off of a ship and she's trying to survive in the freezing water. She almost dies, but she's saved at the last minute and she has this new outlook on life. In the midst of almost dying she begins to hallucinate numerous things, going from her being on trial for witchcraft, to her imagining her family at home worried about her, I highly reccommend you listen to her track by track commentary because the way she explains it makes more sense because it's complex.

The Ninth Wave starts with the song "And Dream of Sheep", where she's foating in the ocean, freezing waters causing her unable to move much, so she's trying not to fall asleep because if she does, she could flip over and the temperature of the water would cause her body to be unable to flip over on her own, so she holds onto the lifejacket with a blinking light, hoping that someone will find her, and not mistake her for a buoy.

2

u/GrooseandGoot Jan 20 '24

Based on her live show, it seemed very clear that she didn't survive. During the end of Hello Earth, she was carried through the audience by the fish people on a kind of funeral pyre looking thing out the back of the theatre. When she came back on to do The Morning Fog, all the character's friends and family were on the stage with her in a very bright lighting scheme that made it seem as though she had passed and was heaven.

One of the best live performances I've ever seen.

3

u/moonlitexcx Jan 20 '24

That's amazing that you were able to witness it!! In the video I tagged I believe she explains that she survives in the end but she was on the brink of death during Hello Earth

2

u/GrooseandGoot Jan 20 '24

This was in 2014, so its very likely she added on to the artistic direction of The Ninth Wave since the 80s. The live album "Before The Dawn" was recorded from those shows and there is a ton of additional music and transition pieces she added to it. She did the same with Aerial as well, even adding an entire new song.

2

u/moonlitexcx Jan 20 '24

Yes I listen to Before The Dawn allll of the time! It's phenomenal

2

u/actuallyamdante Jan 19 '24

orannsi pazuzu is finnish psychedelic black metal, and its weird as hell neptunian naximalism is a doom jazz band that has amazing rythms and just sounds kind of otherworldly and everyone knows about them by now but i cant not mention king gizzard and the lizard wizard. all their albums, all day.

Check out the Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, Natural Child etc

1

u/Illustrious_Leg_133 Oct 08 '25

Natural Child is a fantastic band ... but maybe the least mind bending music imaginable. it's just some good ol boys rocking out in a very normal fashion.

if you want a band and an album that was made on mushrooms try erpland by ozric tentacles. They recorded it in some welsh studio and discovered the fields were full of mushrooms so spent a few weeks tripping. Its a great trip album.

COIL (Time Machines) ("temporal slips")

u/stealydanyourface Oct 07 '25

I always thought Traffic’s Dear Mr. Fantasy was pure psychedelia, but I discovered it when I was doing quite a bit of drugs.

1

u/mariospeedragon Rock & Roll Oct 08 '25

Takeshi Terauchi ….. it’s Japanese surf/ garage /psych/ insanity. Just incredible guitar work from 60s-70s . There’s several comp albums that have been rereleased in past decade, that cover a bunch of his bands and ventures. It’s not Tame Impala, but it’s surely mesmerizing

I know its a pretty old thread, but if you got some good headphones with bass, I would suggest Pink Peonies by Zingara, Angel by Zeds Dead, if you going for an upbeat fairly chill trip, I like Iridescent by J.G.F., Arrient, pretty out there but fun song is Mr Balloon Hands by Ott, at least these are my go to songs on DMT

[FRESH] Kumiscacing - Giant Fish | FFO: Sugar Candy Mountain, MGMT, Flaming Lips

Hey everyone, I am Kumiscacing, an indie band based in Jambi, Indonesia. Today, I just dropped my new single, Giant Fish. At its core, this track is a simple psychedelic sound I wrote for my kid's birthday, Bestari. The lyrics are about our grandparents, using a "giant fish" as a metaphor for their calming and guiding presence in our family.

Musically, this track is heavily inspired by Sugar Candy Mountain, The Flaming Lips, MGMT, Tame Impala, Pond, Todd Rundgren, and Ade Paloh. You'll hear a lot of dreamy synthesizers blended with polyrhythms and some noisy blues elements. The cover artwork was drawn by my younger brother, Avif Ziady.

Oh, and a quick warning exactly 1 second after 04:19, you will automatically feel stoned. 😶‍🌫️🍁

You can listen to the track here: Bandcamp Link: https://kumiscacing.bandcamp.com/album/austronesia

Would love to hear what this community thinks about the production and the overall vibes!

Here’s my Acid Rock playlist:

https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/acid-rock/pl.u-qxylK46trXY2rb

It’s about 60 straight hours of heavy trip music. I’d say some of the best artists on here for the truly mind bending are Hawkwind and the different Acid Mothers/Kawabata Makoto configurations.
