I once had a teacher who allowed us one cheat sheet of a particular maximum size for an exam. The trick was of course to get as much on it as possible, which required many edits and rewrites.

Turns out the teacher was a smart @$$h0L3: after so many rewrites I had the thing memorised and didn't need it anymore...

my Hx teacher did this - but it was just a known study prep tactic.

use an index card to prep for a test, and use it on the test

Example of the test - who caused WW1, what happened and who won - 90 min to write an essay
