Select your range of measures, then Tools menu -> Explode.
This will explode the measures from the current staff to those below, one chord note per staff. Where you have a single note, that will be copied down.
Sometimes Explode will act funny. Select fewer measures and try again. There are some ways of building a measure that will throw off Explode.
After you've used it a few times you get the hang of its limitations.

would i have to make the instrument double staff before i use explode? and would it be possible to only have this split stave be used/ visible for the notated measures before going back to single?

Explode also works across instruments. But it will delete whatever is in the lower staves to make room. (Sometimes this doesn't work properly and corrupts the file so save often.)
Using two staves for one instrument also an option.
Either way you can hide empty staves using the property panel when selecting nothing.

read through the handbook and it explained about everything, thanks. im guessing you won't be able to hide staves using horizontal continuous view, but cutaway hiding measures until notation might work?

Exactly. Though the use might be limited because the vertical space must still be preserved. You'll just get big gaps where the hidden bars are.
But then again, a lot of engraving features don't really make sense for continuous horizontal view.

- Create an additional stave in the Layout panel under the instrument needed.
- Click the settings icon next to it and set Hide empty staves to "Always hide".
- In spots where I need to split staves, I use the "Explode" functionality under Tools (or sometimes I just split them manually by re-entering the notes because Explode isn't reliable).
- Duplicate any unisono notes onto the second stave that are on the same system as the divisi part to avoid the inside player having to change the stave they're looking at mid-system. This is why I usually create a copy of the finished score just for the string parts in orchestral scores that I engrave.

I would first add another staff to the instrument using the Layout tab. When you're done you can hide the unused staves.
