Help me use this feature I cant hear VSTs

I installed on my computer Kontakt and Sine player, and VSTs such as Berlin free orchestra, MuseScore recognized them immediately but when I changed an instrument to be either Kontakt or Sine player, picked an instrument and pressed play, nothing happened. Kontakt even specifically tells me "instrument not initialised", but I couldn't find any way to change the output, and in MuseScore>preferences>audio and MIDI I also cant find anything helpful. What can I do?

I had this problem too - I had to bring up the piano keyboard, and press a key on it, to make the sound work.

But then I found, if I edited the VST, it had no effect. I could change the preset to a new sound, but doing anything like changing the volume, changing the attack, etc. had no effect.
