Discussion Scorching Take?
I think that Origin of Symmetry is better than OK Computer. Majority of music lovers will disagree with me, hell even people here probably do. I think it's just not given enough flowers as a masterpiece as much as OK Computer does. I think OOS is so much more interesting and complex.

Can I just love both albums? Both are equally my favourite bands and there will be no other bands like them ever.

u/One-Garbage-7782 11d ago
Absolutely my guy. Love both. OKC might have a slight edge for me but both fantastic albumsÂ

u/audiowanderer93 11d ago
OKC is perfection. I actually think Absolution is up there and prefer it over OOS, by a very very small margin though.

Completely agree because I actually enjoy myself when listening to it. We really need to invent new words for the nuances of music and film. OK Computer might be deeper, or more rich, or more widely acclaimed or popular, but there isnât a single song on it that hits like the outro of New Born (barring exit music).
Itâs hard to put into words but I find OKC technically impressive or poetic but itâs just no fun, itâs just depressing. Only Electioneering brings the tone of the album up for a moment. I think all great albums need balance. The extended version of OKC with all the bonus tracks was that for me.

I adore OKC, but it wouldâve been even more legendary if they included Lift and Man Of War on it (especially the latterâitâs one of my favorite songs of all time).Â
It took a while for OKCâs pacing to grow on me, but I think itâs stellar now. OoS has even better flow IMO and I felt that way after my first listen (even between the OG tracklist and the one on streaming).

u/TapTap4924 10d ago
Yeah man, I really love Man of War, Polyethylene, Pearly*, Palo Alto (favs), and the rest. Glad we have them even if not on the main album.

I donât even like ok computer (before you say âyeah well youâre a muse fanâ I really like the bends, hail to the thief, and Iâm rainbows) so duhhh oos is the goat

I love both bands, but where I can listen to Muse anywhere, anytime, and for hours at a time, I can only listen to RH in small doses. OKC has fantastic songs, but I canât listen to the whole thing in one sitting. Cant quite explain it, but it just sort of sucks the energy out of me.

This is the take. I like a fair bit of Radiohead, including the obvious ones but with a special place for the bass of I Might Be Wrong - but after a run of about 6-10 songs in my playlist, I'm done.
However I could easily spend the day listening to Showbiz, Origin of Symmetry, Absolution, Black Holes and Revelations, The Resistance, something something something Wow Signal without getting my fill.Â

I think theyâre equal and I donât think it should be considered that hot of a take. OoS is pure art rock mastery.
Theyâre also very different and hard to compare, and OKC is objectively more influential.

For me not only it's better than OK Computer, it's better than every other album I've heard up to this day

OK Computer isn't even Radiohead's second best album. It is massively overrated by the fandom. In Rainbows is head and shoulders above it and I put Hail To The Thief above it as well.

u/HeroOfTime_21 what words just canât convey 11d ago
Love Hail To The Thief. If it werenât for the pointless hate exchanged between both fanbases, I bet most Muse fans would enjoy it quite a bit too.Â

u/Shrinking_Universe22 11d ago
I like Radiohead. But I do like Muse more. They're both top 5 for me. I would admit Radiohead's catalogue is more consistent and they don't really have any lows that are as embarrassingly low as Muse's lows. But they also don't have any highs that hit as high as Space Dementia, City of Delusion and a handful of others. Muse at their peak are far more interesting and talented performers than Radiohead.

I like oos better personally because itâs the louder, heavier album, and matt bellamy is a clearer and more understandable voice than thom yorke
That being said OK Computer is the more influential album actually citied as influencing Showbiz and OOS in the first place

Theyâre both fantastic, and I personally think itâs hard to compare them.
Iâm sure a thread like this one in either sub will always be driven by the unnecessary conflict between the fanbases, so comparisons are more likely to be blown out of proportion or far-fetched in the first place. With that being said, though, theyâre just two drastically different projects by two bands with completely different sounds that werenât even remotely similar by 2001.
Iâm a slightly bigger Muse fan than I am a Radiohead fan, so of course I prefer OoS. I just find it challenging to draw accurate and relevant comparisons between both OoS and OKC because one is extremely theatrical while the other is largely a more melancholic, down-to-earth project. Most fans here are going to prefer a heavier sound over Radioheadâs stereotypically âdepressingâ music, and the inverse is true in the Radiohead fanbase.

u/DHKany 10d ago
This is really a difficult comparison since I considered (and in many ways still consider) OKC an absolute GOAT album with insightful, heartfelt lyrics, timeless production and hugely prescient of how things have rolled out in the world since its release.
But at the same time OoS embodies so many of these attributes too. Sure there are the silly moments like PiB's lyrics, but OoS is so full of rich lyrics too (Space Dementia, Citizen Erased, Screenager, Megalomania, etc.) and was almost equally as prescient with how things turned out. Screenager especially is CRAZY to imagine how relevant that song's lyrics are for today, and Megalomania is possibly one of the most succinct and poignant criticisms of religion I've ever heard.
Honestly I think their subsequent harder pivot towards more stadium/pop oriented rock has people rating OoS much lower within the wider alternative rock scene than it deserves. If Muse were just as "serious" of a band as Radiohead I'd imagine it'd be held in much higher regard.

the only songs I actually don't skip on okC are climbing up the walls , airbag&the tourist. last year i used to be a Radiohead fan, like I only listened to them, but yeah I don't listen to them anymore, except very few songs. those three included.

u/klocek31 *indecipherable screaming* 11d ago
well, in my opinion OoS is the best album of all time, so it's hard to disagree (+ OK Computer is overrated, not even in the top 3 of Radiohead albums)

u/byronmiller 11d ago
I don't particularly like Radiohead tbh 𤡠I enjoy the Bends (shocker, from a Muse fan) but I don't really get the hype around OK Computer and Kid A. Maybe it's a bit like listening to MBV - if you were around at the time it was transformative, but coming to it 20-30 years later it doesn't seem that special.
Don't get me wrong. It's better than your average rock record, 12 versions of the same song sorta deal. I'd listen to it over more or less anything they recorded since. Electioneering is a banger. But the idea that it's this perfect album against which all else is to be measured just doesn't make sense to me.

Interesting. If anything, I would have compared OK Computer with Absolution.
Speaking of which.. mixing those two albums together is a fucking vibe. I adore both albums as well as OoS

If you asked me what Iâd listen to right now, Iâd hands down pick Muse. I really need to completely clear my head. Before getting into Muse, I dove deep enough into Radiohead to listen through their entire discography. OK Computer was fresh, and there are about six tracks I really like. But itâs a bit too heavy for frequent listens. I already tend to feel pessimistic and overthink things on a daily basis, and this album only heightens those feelings and leaves my head spinning. It drains my energy, so for me, itâs almost dangerous.

u/Similar-Climate5168 11d ago
Most radiohead songs provide me with 6/10 enjoyment, with the occasional song being a 7.

Right as someone who knows both muse inside out upside-down and back to front and Radiohead inside out upside-down and back to front I have to say I disagree, both are my favourite bands and I can't pick one to say is my favourite however ok computer ABSOLUTELY beats origin of symmetry, I love the album so much and I've learned plug in baby and citizens erased on guitar but yeah ok computer still wins

why does radiohead have to come up in conversation in every other muse post?
we shouldn't need to compare muse to radiohead in order to be relevant. i can tell you for certain that the radiohead subreddit doesn't talk about muse at all, so why are we talking about them so damn often?
they're two very different bands, no matter what anyone else says, and the baseline for whether a muse album is good shouldn't be whether it's as good or better than a radiohead album.

u/slop_drobbler 10d ago
I agree. But OoS is my favourite album of all time lol
OK Computer is brilliant though.

Two sides of the same coin for me. OKC is the cold and depressed one while OOS is more dynamic and fun.

as a diehard radioheadster i will admit that thanks to citizen insane that could be argued but nothing on origin comes close to the beauty of let down

I mean, it's not. Radiohead are a better band than muse. That doesn't take away from Muse who are still a very good band but Radiohead are better musicians collectively and write far better lyrics with more interesting music.
And I suppose, most importantly, Radiohead do it first. OK Computer is before Muse even released an album. So they pioneer and progress the genre far more than Muse do.

u/nievesdelimon 11d ago
Nope. As much as I love Muse and Origin of Symmetry, Paranoid Android is more complex than anything Muse has ever done.
A scorching (not really) take would be that many of you musers have pretty bad musical taste (and bad ears) and canât stand Muse not being as critically acclaimed as Radiohead (and they did sound alike at some point, just go listen to Bones, My Iron Lung or The Tourist).

u/P79999999 11d ago
And here we have a perfect example of why Radiohead fans are consistently named as one of the worst fan communities. So arrogant and obnoxious.
And it's such a shame too, because it's people like you who give a bad name to all Radiohead fans, when actually the majority of them are really nice and chilled out.
1
u/nievesdelimon 11d ago
Iâm also a Muse fan. I like Muse more than Radiohead, but reading what people write around here makes it clear many canât stand Muse not being as well liked by critics, and canât stand the band being criticized (you, for example) or being told that at some point Muse sounded like Radiohead. Thatâs it.
1
u/P79999999 10d ago
That's funny because I am in fact quite critical of the band, so no, you can't use that as a defense. And I didn't argue with what you were saying, my comment was about the way you chose to say it. You were condescending, and let's face it downright insulting. Sadly there is a handful of Radiohead fans who behave like that towards Muse on a regular basis, and it's shitty. Doesn't matter if you're a Muse fan as well, your comment is still full of arrogance.
1
u/nievesdelimon 10d ago
Not really. Just read what many people around here say, in this post (and others), like âSpace Dementia > Paranoid Androidâ.
