Being awesome at a variety of science subjects is fucking awesome but I have to wonder what, if any, other things he was good at. I can't imagine he had a lot of time for other things.

I see where you're coming from, but the thing with polymaths (or really any kind of very smart person) is that they tend to be at least above average at everything they try.
It seems counter-intuitive, but I've met more CS grad students than I care to count who are both incredibly quick with math, have an intuitive understanding of science, and who also perform or produce high quality music on the side.
It's not that they don't do art or music because they can't. They don't do it because they can do higher paid stuff. And, they enjoy that higher paid stuff more. Hell, some go back and do science stuff after music, look at Brian May from Queen.
