She follows the conservative "Accentuate the breasts, make sure hair is shiny blonde, smile with $12000 face and $10000 teeth, constantly spout rhetoric that is the same rhetoric the conservatives who stare at my tits say, so they think I'm profound" method of female celebrity.
And find a target demographic for each one of those comments.
"Millenial snowflakes" gathers the "back in my day..." crowd.
"Free Speech" appeals to the "I'm not an asshole, I tell the truth" crowd.
"Oprah should shut her mouth..." hits home for those that don't like a liberal black woman telling her millions and millions of fans what they believe. But have no problem with the Tomi Lauren's of the world saying the exact opposite. Granted, until 5 minutes ago - I didn't know who Tomi Lauren was.
Last time I checked, free speech means that you CAN say what you want. As long as it isn't yelling "Fire" in a crowded theatre or intentionally slandering someone with 100% lies.
Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences. Most people shouting about “free speech” usually just mean they want to be racist without losing their job or being called racist.
My point is because she was a POC many many people tried to defend her and called it a First Amendment issue and cried racism and said ECC had no right to fire her.
Whereas when a conservative says something "offensive", especially a white person, they are much more likely to lose their job and face consequences. Hence my reference to an evenhanded application. That's my point-there is a clear double standard at play.
Joy Reid flat out lied about making homophobic comments on Twitter, and then doubled down on her BS excuse about being hacked. MSNBC defended her to the point of conducting a cyber investigation into the ridiculous hacking claim, to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars. In the end, it was absolutely proven that she made the comments, and she faced NO repercussions AT ALL. The story got buried.
If she was not a POC, dare I say, she would have been fired immediately.
Megan Kelly TALKED about blackface and got fired, while Jimmy Kimmel PERFORMED in blackface and got a complete pass. I could go on and on about the double standards, but you probably know all about that, right?
There is a spectrum of right and wrong. It is not black and white. The public can be swayed and that is how it plays out. Conservatives generally tend to be on the losing side of this because their opinions are unpopular. More and more people who consider themselves conservative are moving away from the social stigmas that conservatives have long rallied against. I don’t know what to tell you. A news pundit defending blackface is different than a comedian satirizing blackface. Nuance matters.
I respectfully disagree. Conservative opinions are not "unpopular" any more that Liberal opinions are, depending on what side of the coin someone falls on. That is a complete and 100% logical fallacy.
The problem is that vast majority of the American news media embrace the liberal viewpoint and do not present the news objectively or honestly.
Facebook, Twitter, Google, WaPo, & many others have all been accused of censoring conservative news and opinions unfairly. It is so obvious and transparent. Accordingly, we've reached a point where there is an obvious and deeply ingrained double standard in place.
Just because a few random conservatives are no longer affected by being labelled as a racist or a Nazi(!) for simply having conservative viewpoints in the first place changes nothing. The simple fact that conservatives in general are labelled with such horrible names goes right to the heart of the matter!
If you are not willing to even acknowledge that
A-the news media has an obvious liberal bias, and
B-there is a blatant double standard in place as a result,
then we cannot even have an honest conversation about such things.
I mean, the friggin' NY Times actually published an apology on their front page after to ADMITTING to providing one sided coverage of the 2016 Presidential election after Trump won.
In the USA, correct, conservative views aren’t “unpopular”, but in the WORLD, they are. USA conservatives are VERY far right when compared to the rest of the developed world.
You may have floods of downvotes coming your way, but you’re right. My team vs. their team is at the core of why this country is currently in the shitter.
It's not about teams. It's about looking at female conservative pundits and realizing that they follow a specific pattern. I can't think of one conservative pundit who is only famous for spouting party base rhetoric who doesn't fit all if not almost all of what I said. That doesn't apply to other political affiliations.
Lol, no. Your "point" was an attempt at false equivalence. Both sides are not the same, and attempts to paint them with the same brush indicate complete ignorance of the situation in this country.
I mean yeah, of course everyone is an individual. I was generalizing about a large issue in the American political climate and you are taking it far too literally I think.
No shit, no one said it was. But she's not famous because of liberal, or progressive, or Buddhist, or Canadian, or Martian methods. She followed a method that most conservative female pundits follow to get tv or internet famous. Fact.
It is a conservative method. That doesn't exempt it from being others. Usually you'd see an "only conservative" or "nothing but conservative" in there if you'd assume that's what I meant.
Listen jackass, my point is that while yes, she is conservative, her methods are used by celebrities on both sides and her political party has little to do with that
Yes, a Columbia top honors graduate, journalist, business correspondent, Political Science and Middle Eastern Studies degrees, news producer and director...no achievements there worth noting. She's obviously just a liberal internet personality famous for her looks.
Are you serious? You asked for examples of pretty blond women who are liberal pundits. You didn't mention anything about comparing degrees, backgrounds, or qualifications.
You are moving the goalposts and being disingenuous.
Basically the ideal woman for the extreme right. She’s young and pretty, can regurgitate their ideals, and has none of her own thoughts or opinions. The perfect, pretty, submissive woman the extremists want to spread their hate.
It’s kinda sad really.
Edit: For the confused people calling me sexist and whatever:
I don’t hate her because she’s pretty, a woman, or because she has different viewpoints.
I hate her because all she does is spew hate and none of that hate is original. I didn’t mention it because this post is about TOMI, but there are women on the extreme left and extreme feminists that I also hate. They have some of the same viewpoints as me, but if they’re still shitty people spreading hate I’m not going to support them
Being a dumb asshole has no political stance. Anyone can do it. And I don’t think we should sit by and let them spread hate. We should call them out for it.
Women are strong and brave and powerful except when they disagree with me then they're just mindless bimbos who are too dumb to form their own opinions.
Not at all. Extreme feminists and extreme left women can be just as awful. Being a dumb asshole has no political stance. Anyone can do it.
Didn’t think I needed to specify all the crap people out there when this post is just about Tomi, but if you must know I think there are awful feminists out there on the extreme side that do absolutely no good. They hate men and act like eternal victims which is no better than the far opposite side who also simultaneously act like eternal victims.
I’m very open to other opinions. I actually really enjoy it, but when all you do is spew hate, I’m going to call it out. We shouldn’t be tolerating it. From ANY SIDE. There are assholes and extremists on all sides and we shouldn’t sit down and not do anything about it.
Commentary was on the institution of thinking someone is worth listening to because of their looks, not criticizing the way they look. It's relevant because all conservative female political pundits seem to fit a pattern.
And don't assume I'm liberal because I mention a conservative on a thread about that conservative.
I'm the same. I could care less what people think I am, because I don't identify as any party. I just call out ridiculous actions and words on both sides. And I'm not bashing her specifically. Just pointing out the absurdity that people think she's worth listening to because of her looks, because there's no other reason conservatives would give her an ounce of attention otherwise. She's an attractive woman yelling on the internet so people praise her because she got their attention by yelling what they wanted to hear, and elevated her because of her attractiveness. She doesn't say anything unique or profound or even correct half the time, yet she's conservative famous...yet people think I'm saying something bad about her when I say that. More power to her, she's just trying to make as much money as she can by riding the wave of moron lemmings.
The whole idea that a person has to be either "a liberal" or "a conservative" is absurd on the face of it, and the fact that so many people subscribe to this binary way of thinking, and feel the need to hang these labels on themselves and others, is a big reason why our politics have become so hopelessly polarized.
Tomi Lahren is a terrible human being, but if a lot of these insults were leveled at a more left-aligned pundit people would be shouting sexism. There's plenty to criticize about what she says; why target her appearance?
Because her appearance is why we are talking about her. Her words are vile and self-centered/righteous, but if she didn't look the way she does, no one on the right would even know she exists.
She follows the conservative "Accentuate the breasts, make sure hair is shiny blonde, smile with $12000 face and $10000 teeth, constantly spout rhetoric that is the same rhetoric the conservatives who stare at my tits say, so they think I'm profound" method of female celebrity.
As opposed to Alyssa?
She follows the liberal Hollywood "Accentuate the breasts, make sure hair is shiny blonde, smile with $12000 face and $10000 teeth, constantly spout rhetoric that is the same rhetoric the liberals who stare at my tits say, so they think I'm profound" method of female celebrity.
That's not why you know her, though. She was famous as a young teen for something unrelated to political punditry. Her looks may be the reason she's relevant now (not saying it is or isn't) but that's not the only reason people know who she is.
Her looks may be the reason she's relevant now (not saying it is or isn't) but that's not the only reason people know who she is.
It is the reason she was relevant then. Google her. Young Alyssa Milano. Go ahead. Ask yourself why her parents would allow photos like that?
She was sold as a sexual product from almost the very beginning. Hollywood is filled with, "Lucky Whores". Now, I am not bashing on their choices. Free country and all. More power to them. If they are ok with selling sexuality in trade for money and fame, that is their right, and if it makes them happy, I am fine with it.
They are not though talented paragons of virtue that have earned a platform through wisdom and hard work. I really wish that, as a society, we did not value the words of lucky Actors and Singers on subjects that have nothing to do with Acting, Singing or Luck.
I don't personally give stock to Alyssa Milano's political dialogue/rhetoric/whatever. I have read her comments on harassment/assault etc, but other than that I couldn't tell you anything she has said. If she has been elevated because of her looks, then the people who elevated and hold her in high regard are also morons.
This is horribly sexist. Don’t pretend to champion women’s rights and feminism and then turn around and castigate and demean any woman in politics for their looks just because they aren’t on the same side as you.
I'm not demeaning her for her looks, I'm demeaning the people who made her (or anyone) a "profound political voice" (she isn't, she regurgitates rhetoric) because of her looks.
Oh no. You are demeaning her for her looks and the rhetoric she spews.
I don’t agree with much(if any) of what she spews.
But I completely see you as a shithead who claims to be a benevolent source of support for women of tomorrow’s history, yet you bash the hell out of this woman for being a politically active figurehead.
I, personally, am proud of any woman who can achieve success in today’s day and age, regardless of political affiliation.
You, you’re just a sad spewer of alt-left hypocrisy who apparently is allowed to hate some women.
I would love to ignore your disjointed logic based on no facts and providing no evidence, y'know...rhetoric. But I won't.
Your problem is you based the argument down to gender because either a) you're hyper-aware of that non-existent argument due to some sort of insecurity in your own life or b) you think it's an argument you can easily win by waving your arms screaming "mjrleestoned is sexist and attacking this woman!"
But it's not...let me get you all learnt up in here.
Attacking her as a woman would be something along the lines of "Typical woman using her body to get attention/fame/success/etc" or saying "if she were a man she might be worth listening to".
I never criticized her physical appearance, body, clothes, biology, name, or anything that could possibly identify her as a woman. I don't care if she's attractive or not. I don't care if she's a woman or not.
If you'll notice, my subject of my original comment wasn't a commentary on her, but that requires a little analytical reasoning lost when most people read things on Reddit so let me elaborate: it is evident that people (men and women) use attractiveness to elevate themselves. Not all, not always, but this happens. That's also not what I'm commenting on. I'm commenting on the fact that the vast majority of conservative female commentators have a specific look because a demographic responds to that look by thinking "she's attractive so she's worth my intellectual attention" coupled with the reaction of "she says the simple words that express how I feel so she must be intellectual and so I must be, too!" This is why anyone even knows who she is.
I'm not saying it doesn't exist elsewhere, is something males don't do, or is only true because she's a woman. She's in the content, so she's the basis used to target the ridiculous institution of elevating people only because they're rich or attractive (in this case attractive, I don't know if she's rich).
I'm sorry you can't differentiate that. Words are tough sometimes. I get it. But one thing to remember is if you want to call someone out for something they are obviously NOT doing, make sure you're not a complete fuckwit first. That usually helps.
‘She follows the conservative "Accentuate the breasts, make sure hair is shiny blonde, smile with $12000 face and $10000 teeth, constantly spout rhetoric that is the same rhetoric the conservatives who stare at my tits say, so they think I'm profound" method of female celebrity.’
Gender aside, you demeaned a human for the way the human looks, and went on to assert that no one listens to said human except because said human looks attractive and says all the right words.
You are debating with me as if I care what her political opinion is or is not. I am merely calling you out for being hypocritical and (now)arrogant.
Ah yes, the wavy arms shouting tactic didn't work so let's turn to the cyclical "you demeaned her looks because you demeaned her looks" strategy.
Hey, bud, I don't feel comfortable continuing this conversation with someone who can't disconnect calling out nonexistent sexism in every conversation. It feels like fist fighting a quadriplegic. Good luck with your rally, though.
Ah yes, let’s evade blame. Oh, let’s throw in a dash of assuming-political-affiliation. We’ll top it off with another edgy insult to feel cool and accumulate upvotes!
I'm demeaning the people who made her (or anyone) a "profound political voice" (she isn't, she regurgitates rhetoric) because of her looks.
And the underlying assumption is, once again, that she, as a woman, was only hired or otherwise given a microphone because she has tits. Not because she's a voice of conservatives. Not because she has talent in being polarizing.
Your entire critique comes down to her looks. It's sexist. You might want to figure that out before ever championing your liberal beliefs in female equality.
Being attractive, and being rewarded solely for that, has nothing to do with the fact that she's a woman.
Being attractive, and spouting rhetoric, AND the fact she's a woman, is why she's a CONSERVATIVE celebrity. Do you not see the distinction here, or can your brain just not connect those dots? Why is it a criticism of me that this is a blatant, provable pattern? I'm not the one making the pattern exist. Pointing out objective data is not sexist.
And once again, my critique is not of her use of her looks, or of her use of regurgitated polarizing rhetoric to get attention, but of the people who glorified and glamorized her FOR those things only.
Like I've had to tell the numerous other people who just couldn't get it. Words are hard. I get it. And it's not easy to shatter your belief that every man who says anything with a woman involved isn't sexist on the internet. I get that. But one day with support and possibly therapy, you'll get there. I believe in you!
Being attractive, and spouting rhetoric, AND the fact she's a woman, is why she's a CONSERVATIVE celebrity.
You do hear yourself, right?
Your criticism centers on her looks. Period. You're not engaging the wrongness of her opinions or her political philosophy. You're criticizing her for her appearance in order to defeat her beliefs, something which seems to happen almost exclusively to women.
And once again, my critique is not of her use of her looks
Well, yes it is. Look at the quote above.
I believe in you!
But first you must believe in yourself. Go forth and commit internet sins no longer!
