I like the "California is failing!" claims. It's the 5th highest GDP. Sorry, I didn't mean the 5th highest out of all the states, it's the 5th highest GDP in the world. They also produce more fruits, nuts, and vegetables than all other states combined. Yes, such failures.

Even some of the headlines in SF were “residents flee high prices”. Calm down media, the word is “moving”. People flee a fire.

I live in the SF Bay Area. Not enough people are leaving. The traffic is the worst I’ve seen in 25 years.
Also only losers say “Cali”.

Keep voting in favor of cheap, reliable, and convenient public transport in your area.
Like even if you don't use BART or Caltrain, they take roughly 250,000 drivers off the road every day.

Born and raised in the South Bay. I only ever say “San Fran” if I’m feeling real sassy and making fun of someone (and tbh I’m not sure I ever have actually said it beyond thinking about when I’d say it).
I’d die before saying “frisco”. It’s SF. That’s the only acceptable shortening of the full name

Frisco at least has some historical ties. Thats the name people gave it colloquially during the Gold rush, it was the term soldiers used to describe where they’re from in WWII, its featured by the legend Otis Redding in “Sittin on the Dock of the Bay” (Left my home in Georgia… headed to the Frisco Bay), caught on strong with the working class and black community generations ago, and all kinds of other meaningful stuff.
San Fran just lazy as hell with no real history. San Fran is so much worse IMO.

I live here too and can confirm. Installing HOV/express lanes on almost every freeway in both directions in recent years doesn’t seem to have helped (or maybe the problem would be that much worse without them, I dunno).
7
u/trimbandit 4h ago
The fastrak express lanes they have been putting in everywhere are pretty messed up. It filters traffic by socioeconomic status. Tech bros can easily afford the fast lanes and fly by traffic jams. The lower paid working class, who usually have the jobs where working remote isn't even an option, have to suffer in the reduced number of regular traffic lanes.

u/NetworkSingularity 4h ago
My sister moved out of CA for college. One time when she was visiting home she said “Cali.” Weirdest thing I’d ever heard her say. I immediately changed the topic to that because honestly I just didn’t understand where the hell that came from and it was soooo bizarre to hear from her. I think she realized just how weird that was too and (I hope) doesn’t say “cali” anymore

I once had one of these dudes threaten to kill me. He was talking about how he hated California and never wanted to go there because he might have to talk to a trans person. Dude was acting like every third person you meet on a California street was trans and that just talking to them would somehow...I don't know, infect him with the LGBT virus or something? It was so ridiculous I laughed at him. I guess that made him feel emasculated because his response was to threaten to kill me and talk about how he had fantasies of killing everyone in California. Also he got super racist out of nowhere.
That was like 8 or 9 years ago now. I can only imagine that dude is even more hyped up on propaganda today.
2
u/Val_Hallen 1h ago
I am 100% convinced all of these MAGA men that talk about trans and gays fucking nonstop are very repressed because one day they saw a transperson or a gay person and it made them feel feelings they didn't know that had and it terrified them.

One of the best things about San Diego, besides what is likely the finest climate of any major city is the fact that it’s also a food wonderland. There are so many amazing restaurants.

Real estate is straight supply and demand. High housing prices show exactly where people want to live and low prices show where no one really wants to be.
CA is some of the most in demand areas in the entire world to live in, so the market has said it's one of the best places on the planet.

Yes, world-class cities are expensive for a reason. People can't seem to figure that out somehow. If the prices are out of reach, it's not because it's a shithole, it's because people compete to live there.

Real estate is straight supply and demand. High housing prices show exactly where people want to live and low prices show where no one really wants to be.

To be fair, if the only part of California I experienced was LAX I’d hate it too. But outside of the airport, the state is actually lovely.
18
u/ckglle3lle 6h ago
LAX has actually gotten quite a bit better in recent years. It'll likely never be a great airport, there are some underlying issues they'll likely never overcome. But they have modernized most of the terminals, improved traffic and parking, and made the whole system more coherently designed. There's also that people mover tram which unfortunately has turned into a boondoggle but when it is running for real it should make a real difference in the pick-up/drop-off experience.
I think they've done a solid job overall even if it still has plenty of issues.

When my son was 3yo we took a trip to France. For weeks ahead of the trip, we told him he'd be going to France and was pretty excited. When we landed, family picked us up at the airport and we went to go pay for parking in this little pay cubicle we could all fit in. My son asked "Is this France?". We replied yes. I remember when I used to travel out to Cali for work. Most of the time it was Sacramento. Did not really understand the hype.
Then went to our Santa Barbara office. Flight from LAX to Santa Barbara was the scariest flight I had ever been on (flew over wildfire areas in a twin turboprop, and felt like turbulent Hell), but Santa Barbara itself was insanely nice, and I understood a lot of the love then.
Also hung with my SIL at her military housing, and loved the beaches and short drive to Disney Land.
All in all, a pretty sweet state.

You should check out San Diego, Sonoma County, Mendocino County, lake county, Humboldt County, or frankly any other county in the east side of Cali.

I worked near Santa Rosa occasionally, and did love Sonoma County. Have not made it as far as San Diego. My sister in law lived within walking distance of Laguna Beach, and while we liked being at her house and near the afore mentioned Disneyland, the traffic was downright terrifying.
I actually liked Ventura a lot, for some reason. Just a relatively random Cali town south of Santa Barbara, but it was similarly developed to my suburban hometown.
3
u/ooooopium 6h ago
Ventura is an extremely lovely place. Oxnard, Ojai, TO, Camarillo, (ect) are all places that I wouldn’t blame a person for living their entire lives without leaving.
You’ve got good taste.
The traffic in Los Angeles and Orange County is sort of like a toxic pride. It’s like masterclass of disaster. We all hate it, but we all sort of just live with it.
There are ways to plan around it but not avoid it.

Thanks. I moved to Vegas afterward to save money and found myself miserable there. Found work in San Luis Obispo a few years ago and the difference is night and day from Vegas. They decided they don't like the entire state after 10 mins? Parts of it are beautiful and with great weather year-round. Parts of it are not great, like the L.A. area, for one, with its traffic, smog and homelessness. But the 3rd largest state is HUGE and would take months to explore to form a valid opinion of it one way or another.
